Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

My innovation,is aimed at producing a simple Improve Cooking Stove  which can replace the traditional stove and make a vast positive difference to the lives of the very poorest families in rural Ghana.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What if all those households currently using traditional stoves for cooking are now using improve cooking stove?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

In Ghana, over 80% of households cook with open fires of wood and charcoal using the traditional stoves. The effects of cooking with such open fires kill 4.3 million people annually worldwide, majority of which are in Sub- Saharan Africa. In the traditional stove more woods are used to cook little, due to excessive heat lost. This has resulted in Ghana also losing 15,000 hectares of trees to wood-fuels every year.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The proposed solution is an improved cooking stove. The Improve Cooking Stove has a chimney to remove the majority of smoke from the kitchen. The fire is enclosed and there are two potholes to cook different parts of a meal simultaneously and maximize heat use. The potholes are carefully designed to fit pots tightly so that heat is transferred efficiently, and a baffle is also used to improve airflow and heat transfer. This makes the Improve Cooking Stove much more efficient at converting energy, between 25% and 35%. The ICS uses less firewood and much less time is needed to cook a meal
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The Improve Cooking Stove technology is gaining momentum particularly as wood resources become scarcer and the price of LPG is too high for the ordinary Ghanaian. To the end user, the improve cooking stoves are a viable and low cost alternative to environmentally damaging fuels such as firewood, charcoal and kerosene. The cost of charcoal is also increasing and fossil fuels are inaccessible and unaffordable to the majority of low income groups in Ghana. However, the improve cooking stove is easy to construct and provide employment for the unemployed youth.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

At the moment we are only three people working on full time on the project. We also engaged a lot of the youth on part time basis. We are also training the rural communities members to be able to construct their own improve stoves locally. We expect to cover the whole country with our product idea by the end of the first two years of production. We intend to produce improved cooking stoves to over 1000 families within the first quarter of the year.We believe this will help reduce environmental pollution, and promote a clean, efficient and safe household cooking. Thereby, reducing illness/deaths caused by smoke inhalation. .

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

To meet our target of replacing 70% of all traditional stove with improve stoves, we would need to scale our production to 5 stoves a day. The plan is to organically expand our business to 15 stoves by the end of the Year 3. Thereafter, we will set up a master franchise model to replicate our successful process to the 10 different regions of Ghana in order to reach our target addressable markets Regional and international expansion will also begin from Year 4. The main countries to target are: Nigeria, Cote D’ivoire, Cameroon, Kenya, Mozambique, Ethiopia.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Our solution financial sustainability depends on the demand of the project by households, contributions from family and friends. Since this is a for-profit social enterprise, good amount of the fund realized will be expended on the project to scale-up production and multiply our impact across board.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

My main competitors in this industry are the traditional stoves we aim to replace. In terms of efficiency in heat retention, our improve stoves are 50% to 60% more efficient in retaining heat than the traditional stoves. . In terms of burning time, our improve stoves burn 80% longer than traditional stoves. Which means that less woods are now needed to cook so much food. This translates to cost savings for end users.

Founding Story

The idea of improved cooking stove was dawned on me in 2009 when I took a course on sustainable development and environmental impact assessment at the University for Development studies where I was a student. Since then I have been, discussing with energy experts and environmentalist as to how to come out with an improve and sustainable way of cooking.

Team

Mr. Richard Baalongbuoro is the CEO of the project. Also, there are five (5) Improve Cooking Stove technicians who are building the Improve Cooking Stove and all of them have been certified by Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). All my technicians are members of the local community from the lowest income groups, and they are paid to construct the Improve Cooking Stove.
