About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Genteng village is very remote village located at border of Garut city-West java Province Indonesia where the occupants mostly work as farmers or laborer with very low daily income (Below USD 2 per day income). The distanced village from transportation and public facilities such as from the main street, market, and other facilities affected to high transportation cost of conveying the product to cities and complicate local communities to evolve.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

1.Establishing Local farmers Market in remote area (very Cheap rent fee) A local market established at communities area to create mutual benefit for local farmer and communities. The market will increase the return of the agriculture and homemade product. It is also easier and closer local communities to buy their needs. 2.All Communities involve in the business chain The local farmer become shopper, local communities become buyer and or product supplier, and also local youth employed in market to be parking staff and management staff 3.Economy empowerment program Assisting the seller to get soft loan from the bank, educating them saving awareness with compulsory daily saving program, and providing business counseling program.

1.Providing the cheapest and easiest Rent Fee We rent the kiosk with very cheap rent fee less than USD 100 Per Year. We consider that so many farmers couldn’t pay that cost on cash, so we providing easiest rent payment system by pay rent fee through daily saving only 24 Cent per day. 2.Educational program -Eco-friendly concept Framing about Indonesia traditional market which dirty and smelly transform into clean eco-friendly market in our market by providing waste management dept. to produce fertilizer from market organic waste to help farming activity -Economy empowerment to accelerate the better economy condition Up-scales the farmers growth by gradual and sustainable program that easier farmer to plan their business progress

Current impacts (2015): 1. 367 poor farmers involve in become seller of their local agriculture product in Genteng Market 2. Local farmers become product supplier and more than 200 poor households optimized their house yard to produce small-scales agriculture product and become the small-scales agriculture producers to Genteng Market 3. 5 Sellers has saving Balance more than USD 5,000 ,- and has rented kiosk in Govenrment market (Located in cities) for 5,000,- rent fee per year. 4. 56 local Youth employed in our market 5. local farmers starts using compost produced from market organic waste to make healthier product and cheaper fertilizer Future Impacts (Next 2 years) 1. Up-scales the market that can cover more than 500 poor farmers to be the seller. 2. providing space for vocational student to learn business lesson in our market to spread youth entrepreneur spirit.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The full impact we would like to create is make a pilot village that has a well-management, eco-friendly and sustainable business model on agriculture and local-potencies (culture and scenery) that can bring a local communities to get their better welfare condition. Hopefully, the business model could be replicated in other villages in Indonesia which have a similar condition, problem, and potencies.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

As of this time our operational expense covered from annual rent income. Currently, the maintenance expense covered from annual grant from Yasebha Foundation. We plan to Increase the rent fee in next 2 years after the farmer has a better economy and they has ability to pay an extra rent fee. We hope the new rent income could cover all expense and get profit to give additional service at the market such as storage to keep the product fresh.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

No one. Poverty and farmers problem helped by government through providing cheap fertilizer and cheap seed. But it isn’t helpful because the farmer still have to pay an expensive transportation cost to get that benefit and also expensive cost to bring the agriculture product to the cities. In other hand, The government market (Located in city) is not a good solution for farmer because they rent the space with expensive cost and bad management system which hardly to obtain by local farmer who come from remote village.

Founding Story

The idea initiated from local youth who concern on local potencies. Genteng village is a fertile village with exuberate of agriculture product but not optimized well to give well-being impact to the communities. The farmers still life in poverty condition and get unequal return from the products. In 2010, we collaborate with Yasebha Foundation to make Local Business Centre in this village with establishing 5 pioneer kiosk aims to help 5 local farmers. Surprisingly, at the same year the customer were booming and affected to big new kiosk order because there are no market that cover 15 villages surround the village.
