Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

GreenLoo provides a public health service: it is a portable dry toilet that targets rural areas that suffer from the lack of sanitation. It also uses the human waste (urine and feces) and transforms it into a fertilizer throughout a simple process.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What If children stopped dying from water-borne and Diarrhoeal diseases in rural areas and girls could go to school normally thanks to healthy sanitation?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

In Morocco, residents of the countryside use dangerous ways as alternatives: buckets, plastic bags, holes or even defecation in streets so it is not weird anymore to run into people who urinate in public. The project aims to deal with the lack of proper sanitation in countryside Morocco and the absence of public toilets. It also resolves the problem of the dirt behind walls.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The solution proposed is a public and portable dry toilet. The access and service only cost ¢10. The surface of one unit is 2m². Its mobility makes it possible to put it anywhere at any time: it doesn’t need piping nor holes. Only a small amount of water will be needed for the anal cleansing and hands washing. It is indeed very eco-friendly and economical. The system of these toilets is also ecological since it uses sawdust to facilitate aerobic processing, liquid absorption, and odor mitigation. The person who manages the toilet will be collecting urine and fecal matter which are separated (squat separating toilet) to produce a fertilizer and commercialize it to bio farmers.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The first rural area where the product was implemented was Tnine Al Gharbia, where people suffer from the total absence of sanitation facilities (which is the case for most of the rural places in Morocco). Girls had even stopped going to school because they live far away from school and toilets are not available. The micro-entrepreneur we chose, an unemployed middle-aged resident of Tnine Al Gharbia had as a source of income the revenues generated from the service proposed by GreenLoo. The mobility of the toilet was of big help since he could change places depending on the seasons: he had moved it nearside a beach in the summer.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

After a year, we were able to implement one toilet in Tnine Al Gharbia where the people were surprisingly very open and ready to embrace the change and adapt. Over 1600 people, 80% of which were women and children have used our toilets during only 5 months. Our next step is duplicating the project in many more rural areas in Morocco and even abroad.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The project aims to cover 23.000 of the population of Tnine El Gharbia, therefor we are willing to invest $12.000 in order to reach out to its every corner, and then spread in other bigger rural areas where there is even bigger human traffic. Afterwards, after the micro-credits will have been paid, we will be able to produce more toilets on a regular basis and offer our services to the whole country and beyond.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

First, the toilet is built. The equipment and materials are provided throughout sponsorships. The revenue made from the use ($0.1 each) and marketing the fertilizers allows the entrepreneur to benefit from the project. He must give us 10% of the monthly revenue back in a time interval of 2 years to be able to invest again in new entities and further and strengthen the impact.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

In the countryside, there is no other entity addressing the problem of sanitation neglect the same way our project does. It is an untapped market in Morocco: public toilets are unavailable, and dry toilets aren’t common. The particularity of GreenLoo is its sustainability, in addition to the mobility of the toilet. It has so far provided a new source of income to an unemployed person who is now supervising it, and has also impacted a small rural community in a way that made them realize the huge importance of sanitation.

Founding Story

The problem of public toilets in Morocco is very huge. Public toilets are unavailable and Moroccan people are not aware of this issue. It was one of the main reasons of loosing the organisation of the FIFA worldcup 2010 and many big events. So we decide as a Team of 7 people to create a simple dry toilet that will be portable, and simple to use and ecological public toilets, starting with rural areas.
