We have invented a device that can monitor a bicycle wheel's rotation and award points to a user through an app. They can then use said points to get discounts or free items at participating locations. Our product will increase the amount of bicycles on the road and help people get and stay healthy!

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

We have to many cars on the road. Sitting in traffic is not only frustrating, it's not good for your health. Sitting in a position for sometimes over an hour every day creates posture problems, as well as keeps you from getting the exercise you need. We want to eliminate these issues.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

We have created a device that attaches to the wheel of a bicycle. Through a built-in accelerometer, the device tracks the rotations of the bicycle wheel and sends this data to an accompanying app on the user's smartphone. This data is converted into points, and the farther a user rides, the more points they get. These points can be used to earn coupons or free items at participating businesses, making it more very worthwhile to ride a bike around town. In addition to getting free items, users will be getting the cardio they need to stay healthy.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Our product will incentivize users to go outside and bike! By biking, users will be getting exercise and burning calories - without even thinking about it. It's a fun way to earn rewards for staying healthy, and we think this product can substantially decrease the obesity problem we are facing right now.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

We are still at the idea stage as of now; however, this product could be used in the future by millions or potentially billions of consumers around the globe. Getting people out to bike is really what we want to do, and in that process we hope to increase the general healthiness of people all around the world.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

We first need to develop our product, as we are still at the idea stage. After that, we need to get businesses on-board so that we can provide incentives to users, and soon after that begin to start giving away our invention in small batches, perhaps at smaller bicycle races in goodie bags.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

After we get the word out about our product, we will begin to sell our product online in an e-commerce site. There will be a small charge so that we have enough to keep making our product, but not large enough to turn a profit. Our excess cash will be used to improve our product and decrease prices to make it available to as many people as possible.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Michelle Obama's Let's Move! program is attempting to address childhood obesity, but we think this is not enough. We think everyone needs to get exercise and maintain their health, that's why our product can be used by everyone, young or old.

Founding Story

Sitting around a table one day, we started thinking about ways to get people active, and how we could make exercise fun. That's how we came up with spin to win - by taking an existing activity that most people can already do, then added incentives to help people keep doing it.

Team

We are a team of 6, 5 engineers and a chemist. With our combined knowledge, we have the skills to create such a device and an app to accompany it, and can give people all around the world motivation to stay healthy!
