Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

IBAPP represents Africa's most sustainable smallholder farm model. The concept equates youth development, environmental stewardship, and agricultural profitability towards emergence. We utilize hardcore ICTs and mix modern farm technologies with traditional farm practices to produce food you can trust.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What if African Youths practiced Sustainable Agriculture to end unemployment and gain livelihood ?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

The project attempts to address two main issues : Rural Land degradation(pollution)-Over dependence on chemical inputs with no substitutes .Over 46% of the rural farmers depend on chemical inputs.20% of the total are illiterate and apply inappropriate rates. Youth unemployment -Youth Abstention from Agriculture-Over 70% of total active farmers in Cameroon are over aged ( 58+). 133 million African Youths are jobless and poor (< $2 a day).

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

IBAPP intends to develop an independent smart-green farm that can integrate the entire production process from cultivation to processing and commercialization.Manures obtained from specialty livestock will be processed into quality fertilizers for our farms and 450 smallholder farms in year 1 kick-starter phase of the project.Low cost sustainable fertilizers can be afforded by rural farmer at all time. -The project will implore innovative technologies(Greenhouse,GIS Systems, smart farm mechanization)These initiatives will motivate and inspire more young Africans to take leadership roles in farming and reduce unemployment.Cropping system(greenhouse) requires small land which could be accessible by youths but often a problem.

Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The project operates an integrated livestock facility.Animal by-product from here is composted into quality semi-finished organic fertilizers that is applied to high value poly tunnel crops. The total amount of organic fertilizer will serve 460 other smallholder farms in Bali.At harvest, our products(Livestock, fertilizers and high carat vegetables)are directly marketed to consumers on our online platform. IBAPP will assist motivated young rural farmers operating under IBAPP bio standards. This will enable them produce more, reduce post harvest loss while obtaining flexible and high premiums(eliminating poverty) for their quality organic products while simultaneously protecting the natural resource base.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Borrowing from its innovative and technological initiatives, the project has seen a 2% increase of youths in the Bali community venture in agribusiness activities via questionnaires in Bali.We plan to register and empower 150 youth farmers in bio precision farming the second quarter of year two.The project is currently working with students in the Regional college of Agriculture Bambili on innovation and sustainability in tropical agriculture. About 460 smallholder farmers will benefit from 21 tons of organic fertilizer yearly. Benefits will be in terms of low production cost, soil conservation, selling on the organic market and a sustainable cropping cycle. We plan to increase pure organic food production by 30% and become the major producer of Cayenne in Cameroon by 2021.The initiative will create a new breed of young rural conservative agri-entrepreneurs fueling development.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The project is appropriate for the sustainable manufacturing organic fertilizers and bio pesticides with a good market potential at this time when people are changing eating habits from conventional to organic. A complete state of the art project creates job opportunities. The project will create 5 permanent and 37 casual job opportunities each cropping season. The aim of the IBAPP project is to support the development of smallholder food systems via a systematic process: product chain integration, innovation, human resource training, technology and commercialization of the product.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

With about 70% shareholder stock equity ratio,a 30% cash investment from UNILEVER will furnish adequate cash flow and cover expenses for one year.Project maintenance will be enhanced by financial planner in place for accountability and record keeping. We intend to also target foreign/European markets to obtain premium prices for exotic bio products.Revolving fund will pay any debt from project-based transaction after donor funding is terminated

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Our initiative is entirely new in Cameroon.NGOs,Farmer groups and environmental consultancies are failing at addressing land pollution/ unemployment. IBAPP ushers in an integrated, innovative and pragmatic solution(model).IBAPP will make available a regular supply of bio fertilizers/pesticides from plant and animal by-product via a symbiotic integration of farm processes. Our use of modern farm technologies, internet and social media in our marketing mix while developing an e-marketing platform to advertise are in view of motivating rural youths to self-employ in the food value chain.

Founding Story

IBAPP was initiated from an individual research idea and has so far developed into a product based company. After graduating with a LL.B degree in 2012 with no job,the founder:Divine Ongey, was passionately inspired to self-employ by venturing into bio farming after volunteering for a Women's Empowerment Organization advocating for food cultivation without the use chemical fertilizers.Since 2012,the research objective has been to produce a more efficient 'green' substitute .After travelling to Europe in 2014 to research on Precision Organic Agriculture with the Austrian Ministry of Agriculture, the team is now back in Cameroon ready to register and launch Africa's 'Greenest' Corporate Farm.
