About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Project Azmat is an endeavour to liberate the manual scavengers by providing them with a respectable source of livelihood and facilitate construction of toilet systems in the target area. These women were the sole bread-earners of their families with a meager income of Rs.10 per day in kind. These women faced discrimination, untouchability and social exclusion from rest of the society which prevented them from leading a life of dignity.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

1. Need For Proper Sanitation: We collaborated with Sulabh International Social Service Organisation for the removal of dry latrines and construction of two pit toilets for the entire village. 2. Alternative Livelihood for Women: Considering an altogether novel occupation for these rehabilitated women, detergent was chosen as a viable product. To enhance our portfolio we diversified into 7 more cleaning products namely Phenyl, Liquid Handwash, Floor Cleaner, Toilet Cleaner, Multipurpose cleaner, Dishwash Liquid and Glass cleaner. ISI marked raw materials are obtained for these products, through Chemisynth Group, thereby ensuring high quality products.

Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The removal of dry latrines has helped to completely eliminate the problem of open defecation which was the root cause of manual scavenging. With the creation of two pit toilets, safer and cleaner environment can be ensured. The two pit toilets conserve water and convert human waste into nutrient rich manure, which also promotes the agrarian economy of the village. It has not only provided better sanitation facilities to 8000 residents of the village but has also prevented the manual scavengers from harmful diseases like typhoid and cholera. The women have become proficient in the process of manufacturing cleaning products.Basic literacy and financial training has enabled them to independently interact with future markets.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

We have abolished manual scavenging by construction of proper toilets. We have collaborated with Sulabh International Social Service Organization for construction of 128 eco-friendly and cost effective two pit toilets.Markets generating projected revenue of Rs 4,87,500 per month have been identified. These include: Dhobhi Ghats), Laundries, Hotels, Hostels, commercial markets through organisations like NABARD. The women now earn Rs. 5355 marking a 1785% increase in income. We plan to increase the sustainability of the business model by establishing Neki as a competitive market playerThe women who faced discrimination, untouchability and social exclusion from rest of the society are now able to rise up to the mainstream to lead a life of dignity. The creation of toilet pits has discouraged open defacation and improved sanitation.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Bulk contracts for Neki, supplemented by reinforced rural marketing efforts have led to a substantial increase in the incomes of women. Market expansion into the product of phenyl and other products is a great advantage because they have sizeable bulk demand. With the help of SKA and NABARD, we have already identified other villages where manual scavenging is still prevalent. We now plan to expand our approach in tackling this practice by replicating our successful and sustainable model as it is not restrictive in terms of products and can be altered according to the skill set of the community

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

The community group is well trained in financial literacy to handle business activities. Product diversification into other products promises greater penetration into the market and also the B2B nature of this type of products ensure consistent bulk demand year-round. Main source of revenue is from the sales of products which are retained in the business for further expansion, thus making this model sustainable.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Sulabh International Foundation and Safai Karmachari Andolan are presently working along these lines to eradicate manual scavenging by identifying manual scavengers and facilitate their rehabilitation. Our model is one which works completely like an enterprise with a profit motive but on the other hand Sulabh International Foundation is more of a charitable organization which engages manual scavengers in different activities just to keep them engaged and provides a stipend for work hence no enterprise aspects are there in it.

Founding Story

One of the former members of Enactus SRCC came across a newspaper article on Safai Karamchari Andolan, a national movement committed to wipe of the problems of manual scavengers and ensure their proper rehabilitation. When we contacted them we were taken to Nekpur village, where we witnessed and understood the real problems faced by the community of manual scavengers. That’s how Project Azmat was initiated and from then to till now it was a journey of sincere dedication and hard work to empower them.

Enactus is an international non-profit organization that works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize university students to make a difference by developing a sustainable business model for their community and empowers them to be financially strong and independent.
