About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Poor Students of SC and ST communities were unable to take benefits of Post Matric Scholarship due to initial fee for admission and their inability to bear hostel and Food Expenses in Educational Institutions for professional course studies, PMS was in complete dead condition even though started in 1944.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Sanmat facilitated student Mobilization , scholarship application filing , follow up with Government and Colleges. Colleges will get agree to admit these poor students without any charge & They will provide free stay with food as their social responsibility . Tuition and Maintenance Fee will be collected from the scholarship amount released by respective state government to college or student account in what ever time.

Impact: How does it Work

We have started our journey by convincing education institutions about the issue of vacant seats and made them understand that resources are being used commonly, So admitting students free of cost will not burden them much. They may offer us the left out seats. This has brought more than 5 colleges in 1st year. For student counselling, psychometric analysis we created team of counsellors trained ,studied at TISS. Few Senior students, Faculties also joined us for noble cause. We started visiting Panchayat and holding camps, awareness drives, Calling Campaigns, Nomination request from Teachers.440 competent students for Diploma, Degree in Engineering , BBA,MBA Courses were trained with basic coaching later they joined courses as per choice.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Till the date this campaign has spread in entire Bihar & Partially in UP, Jharkhand and NE States. It can be replicated across country with slight modification,. Networking and Mobilization is key. If replicated across India, we will be able to professionally educate more than 30 lakh economically backward Schedule cast and Schedule Tribe students each year on scholarship. It will change cast dynamics of India. The percentage of professionally qualified SC & ST students will raise to 80% from 3% in just 4 years. This is the only way to let them use benefits of reservation and later it will have potential to abolish this reservation policy.It will impact more than 6000Lakh Peolpe. we were able to create impact over 1 Lakh families and strengthen their social status of equality with upper cast people. In Last 4 years we have manged to touch each and every panchayat of Bihar.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Our strategy is to create network, make associates and use PRI leaders for the same. We do cold calling to CBOs, NGOs and Youth Associations. Hold workshops, Conferences , PRI leaders meet and Youth Summits. We also use to contact school/College Teachers and request them to nominate 5 SC &ST Students for this. We are working to reach each panchayat of Jharkhand and UP this year and targeting 1 lakh students to send for professional education.We are trying to establish communication with State Government for the same. If we will get more partners in other states , we may start in West Bengal

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

As per our agreement Educational Institutions used to cover all expanses by paying us 10-15% of the released scholarship amount in 1st year. which is paid by them after receiving Scholarship. Few Institutions pay nominal support amount to meet mobilization, Counselling, Preparatory course Expenses. We go for individual community funding and also give option to students to pay 100 Rs as registration fee.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

As per our project idea , Most of the people are following our models. 1st , our uniqueness is the preparatory/Bridge course provided to mobilized students, It basically gives basic idea of course and students get comfortable with curriculam and it help colleges to retain students whereas in other cases More than 50% students return back. 2nd we also try to provide skill training to the not selected or weak students, So in a way, Whoever comes to us get something to engage and any skill to pursue their life in dignified way. So we claim complete empowerment of youth of marginalised community.

Founding Story

SANMAT founded in Chennai by Engineering Students Amit Choubey, Brijesh Yadav, Nitesh Kumar and Avinash Ranjan in the wake of tsunami with the purpose of spending time with the kids who lost their parents in Tsunami. Later SANMAT started providing help to students coming to southern India for studies. Sanmat team also developped a book Bank and started lending books free of cost to economically poor engineering students. After B.Tech all joined Fottune companies. I decided to resign my Job and gone for higher education in world's best Development school IDS at Univ. of Sussex.UK. After my return all decided to comeback to sanmat. Currently we are working with Govt of India Bihar& Jharkhand. Currently sanmat is leaded by Amit Choubey


We have Alumna of IDS,LSE,TISS, Florida,Dr MGR University, Bharat University. All of the leaders are engaged with some unique initiative. We are operative in Jharkhand, West Bengal and head quarter in Patna. We have 7 district based offices for Social Forestry projects in Bihar along with 8 Women Skill cum Entrepreneurship development centres in Bihar. We are 8 people in our team: Tanzeem Alam, Mani Mishra, Priyanka Shah, Rishi and Kumar das.
