About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Due to lack of adequate storage facilities at household or community level, the maize grain cannot be protected and held for future sales. As such farmers accept whatever prices they can get before their produce gets spoilt due to poor storage on farm. This is a contributing factor on rural household poverty and food insecurity. In the months of August, September till the end of the year after the stocks are depleted, any available grain is great

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Building a cooperative business through setting up of bulking centers in areas of potentially high maize production where markets are under developed due to high prevalence of poverty will help stimulate and develop market. By setting up a bulking center (Warehouses), providing warehouse receipts to smallholder farmers, building partnerships with financial institutions, regulatory bodies like the Uganda Commodities Exchange, agricultural financing for ag-inputs, improved seed technologies become realistic to smallholder farmers. This creative convergence of push factors stimulates market forces, drive motive for increased production, deliver food security infrastructure and reduce poverty at household level.

Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

At peak harvest season a kilogram of maize sells at $0.12 and $0.48 during the dry season. So the middle-men with bulking and storage centers make a profit of more than 300% profit which if smallholder farmers can be helped to hold to their produce for much longer will help farmers negotiate better prices in the value chain and help reduce poverty especially among youths, women and the elderly. The application for will be used to 1) Mobilize Women farmers into farmer enterprise groups for training 2) Setting up of a 500 metric ton warehouse for bulking maize harvest 3) Building trust relationships between and among maize value chain actors 4) Marketing initiatives 5) Warehouse operations.

Key indicators of performance 1) Number of smallholder farmer enterprises formed, mobilized and trained 2) Number of smallholder farmers joining the cooperative 3) Actual number of farmers trained 4) Progressive number metric tons of maize stored at the warehouse per season 5) Progressive price per unit of grain negotiated with the market after bulking and storage over a number of harvest seasons 6) Progressive production volumes of grain 7) Number of youths and women under the cooperative 7) Change in household incomes 8) Number of households diversifying crop production eg agro-forestry.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The project will sustain itself by eliminating middle-men and scooping the profit that the middle-men have been taking due to poor price negotiation skills of smallholder farmers by the cooperative taking more control of the maize value chain and adding value through prolonged storage, collective bulking and marketing. This profit margin will help scale the cooperative by building more storage capacity to accommodate larger volumes and take advantage of economies of scale. The productive infrastructure established will also be able to attract credit suppliers given the numbers over time .

Urban Manufacturers: We differ from them because we tackle the root causes of poverty. In most cases, most rural farmers have been under mined and not supported. In this essence therefore, they have been exploited by the Urban traders where they offer less on any produced grain and when they go to Urban centers, they gain much from the produce and leave farmers in the cycle of poverty. Founding Story

Born to refugee parents fleeing from the political turmoil in Rwanda in the 1970s, Shaka was raised in times of political turmoil in Uganda. He lost his father in the war and grew up on the war’s frontlines. His mother served in the Ugandan army and, partially because his parents were uneducated and did not appreciate the value of education, he dropped out of school when he was seven.Shaka’s early childhood experiences created a drive in him to give back to others. Orphaned at nine-years-old, Shaka was educated on government bursaries and he always felt that he owed society for the investment it made in him. In June 2000 Shaka graduated from Makerere University. He opted to help the needy.

Mr. Lugasira Henry. Henry holds a degree in Public Administration and management and diplomas from Nkumba University, International institute of Environment, University of Virginia, Howard University and United States Telecommunication Training Institute (USTTI). He has worked with National Agricultural Advisory developmental services, Action for the needy, Uganda parent’s care for the mentally handicapped children. He is currently the deputy C.E.O and heads production department for Rockford Harris group Mr. Paul Nyende. He holds a Masters in Agricultural Economics & a Bachelor’s of Science in Agriculture from Makerere University. Paul has been a Project Coordinator for Africa2000 Network, a Program Specialist with the UN Food & Agriculture Organization, Consultant for the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) on Agricultural Information Systems & currently a Lead Manager in Rockford Harris Group. Mr. John Ereng. He holds a Master of Science in Agricultural Extension, Birmingham University, UK, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture, MUK. John has been a Project Coordinator for Africa2000 Network. He has experience in business and product development having worked for Strasburg in Ethiopia & British American Tobacco in Uganda. He is currently a Business Development Consultant for Rockford Harris Group. Mr. Kuteesa Wilberforce. Wilberforce holds a Bachelor of Business Administration, MUK Business School. He also has a Higher Diploma in Stock and Inventory Control Cambridge Tutorial College. He is a CIPS certified Logistician. He has worked for Mantrac as an Intern and now with Rockford Harris Group as a Warehouse & Logistics specialist. Ms. Helen Namulwana. Helen Holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, MUK, Bachelor of Art Degree in Social Science, MUK, a Diploma in Public Administration, Uganda Management Institute. She has worked as a Program Coordinator for Uganda Child Right NGO Network, a Consultant for the Swedish International Development Agency in Oslo, now a business consultant for Rockford Harris Group.
