About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Every year, about 1,000 people die in road accidents on Lagos roads. Traffic on Lagos roads recently as become appalling as citizens (17million) end up not knowing where their destination lies.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The Lagos Traffic Map at http://lagostraffic.crowdmap.com helps to aggregate on a live map, reports from tweet hashtag (#lagostraffic) of road users, thus helping to give out early warnings to other users; and helps emergency managers in coordinating and managing mishaps.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Road users (citizens) help to give out situation reports while on the road using their mobile devices, which is then aggreagated on a live map that can be viewed on the internet or mobile phones.
Sustainability

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There is the trafficng.com that follows reports from thesame tweet hashtag and uses an SMS shortcode to inform road users whenever they send a message to the shortcode, however the Lagos Traffic Map is free and can be viewed and followed by anyone

Specify both the depth and scale of your solution’s social impact to date

In 37days of creating the Lagos Traffic Map, 115 places were geolocated,92 hold ups were reported, 4deaths reported,1 injured, 7car accidents, 36 early warnings were generated from citizens reports aggregated from the internet.

What is your projected impact within the next 1-5 years? Is your idea replicable? If so, how?

The Lagos Traffic Map hopes to impact about 10million people living in Lagos (about 60% of the present population),we hope the government agency in charge of Lagos Traffic Monitoring can use this technology as an alternative method to the traditional method been used, and other populated urban centers can also put up their own live maps.

Sustainability

Hybrid model

What barriers have hindered the success of your project to date? How do you plan to overcome these and other challenges as you grow your solution?

Reports from non-trusted sources, not much volunteers working on map, reports not answering the 3W -who, what, where. To overcome these, we will train and recruit more volunteers; do online enlightenment about proper reporting

How do you see the information-technology and media sectors shifting over the next decade? How will your solution adapt to and/or drive that changing environment?

With about 70% of the Nigerian population actively subscribed to the mobile networks, 50million out of 140million using the internet, 3.7million using facebook; it really means we might not run out of reports, but we will have more; as such we need more volunteers to work with and sort reports

Failure is not always an option. If your solution fails to gain traction in the next two years, what other applications of the idea could you explore?

If the Traffic Map does not work, we still have the ihumanitarian group (volunteers) that can still help on other crisis such as putting up a map during natural disasters in the country and elsewhere.

Expand on your selections, explaining how you will sustain funding

Developing Maps for Government Institutions and Creating Trusted Social Media Desk; proceeds will be used on building capacity of members of the ihumanitarian group that monitors the Lagos Traffic Map
