This business is all about creating computers out of trashed materials for low-income families here in the Philippines.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

One of the prevailing problems that continue to haunt the Philippines is the educational system. Majority of the Population are enrolled in public elementary and high school, these facilities are understaffed and operating far below budgetary needs with a ratio of one teacher to eighty students. It would be extremely difficult for the students to learn the daily lessons. That is why my project is proposing an alternative channel for students belonging to low-income families to have the opportunity of accessing the world of information through the use of reconditioned Personal Computers. Personal Computers bridge the users to the world that is why, it is essential that the future generations of Filipinos must connect to the world so as to improve their limited knowledge.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

My business is innovative because of the mass production of computers made out of scraped or trashed materials were never done before throughout the Philippines. Low-income families in the urban community will have now the opportunity to purchase personal computer for their children’s advancement. Those in the rural communities will have the opportunity of accessing the internet through the coin operated rental of internet stations. For every peso (US$0.023452) one drops is equivalent to five minutes of internet access. With the growing market for recyclable products, it is the desire of this endeavor to produce a product that is made out of scraped materials but keep the costs of its distribution down so as to compete even with the cheapest current brand new computers available in the market. For our distribution, we will establish three channels: (1) the Direct Sales Team who will transact and distribute to urban Distributors; (2) Urban Distributors will cater to retailers. (3) printed marketing materials that intend to increase the target market’s awareness of the same capability of our product.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

A student wanting to access the internet but has no computer of his own may go to a coin operated rental internet station and by dropping a one peso coin he then will have five minute access with the internet thereby giving the said student or any user the opportunity of gaining such learning that he may have missed in school and the operator of the coin operated rental internet station to earn additional income. A more specific instance is the coin operated rental internet station that I am operating with the use of three reconditioned computers in a shack owned by my parents. Everyday more than 50 elementary and high school students patronize my small scale business establishment through the feedbacks of these students reveal that since they had started patronizing my coin operated rental internet station they all became more participative in their class discussions. Their school grades have greatly improved. Non-students who patronize my rental internet station now have facebook.com accounts and some have made contributions to youtube.com thereby making them more socially interactive to different level of society which ordinarily they would difficulty of doing in the ordinary course of their daily lives.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

A number of leading Personal Computer brands have dominated the Philippine market since 2001 and these are HP, Dell, Acer, Lenovo and Toshiba. However these are companies are solely dedicated in catering the needs of the middle and upper class of the society. The low-income communities are left behind with limited option when it comes to personal advancement. One of the greatest challenges I see is the ability of these established brands is that they can easily dominate the market with their latest technology and financial resources just to reach their objective. However, this doesn’t mean that I cannot compete with them. What makes my business competitive is my ability to cater to the low-income families here in the Philippines while this highly establish manufacturer only supplement the demands of the middle and upper class of the market. Given that these manufacturers produce their products outside the Philippines makes their produce highly expensive for the ordinary Filipino to avail.

Social Impact
FOUNDING STORY: We want to hear about your “Aha!” moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution’s potential to change the world.

I live in a nation that is so preoccupied with problems. Corruption and mismanagement are one of the prevailing issues that continues to haunt my nation. I always believe that if I keep on thinking about the problem nothing will ever happen. That is why I look for opportunities in the problems people experiences. Today I intend to address this problem in our education sector. I want the citizen of my nation to be active in nation building. I want them to have a say in our government. However, this could never be realized if majority of our young generation do not have the appropriate access to information. Knowingly my nation's education sector is highly operating under their budgetary needs. It is vital that all Filipinos must have alternative access to information.

Specify both the depth and scale of your solution’s social impact to date

At present I am operating with the use of three reconditioned computers in a shack owned by my parents. Everyday more than 50 elementary and high school students patronize my small scale business establishment through the feedbacks of these students reveal that since they had started patronizing my coin operated rental internet station they all became more participative in their class discussions. What I am opting to achieve is that my business will be available to millions of Filipinos who do not have alternative access to information.

What is your projected impact within the next 1-5 years? Is your idea replicable? If so, how?

My project aims to provide an alternative opportunity for millions of Filipino to purchase reconditioned computers for their entertainment and advancement. With the use of my recondition computers I will also establish a coin operated rental internet stations directly located within the village communities in the rural areas.
Within the next 1-5 years from now, Filipinos will be able to directly participate in the decision making of their community affairs through the positive influence the internet poses. It will also offer another platform for millions of Filipino farmers to improve their production output through the information they gather over the internet.

Business

What barriers have hindered the success of your project to date? How do you plan to overcome these and other challenges as you grow your solution?

As a start-up company, my most and immediate goal is to reach my projected production and sales during the first year of the venture’s operation and expand my existing coin operated rental internet stations to other communities. The achievement of said goal will in turn determine the capability of this venture to attain its all others goals. It is my ambition to introduce this innovation and develop new electronic product that would encourage the use of recycled materials within ten years of this venture’s operation without compromising the quality and cost of the intended product.

How do you see the information-technology and media sectors shifting over the next decade? How will your solution adapt to and/or drive that changing environment?

At lot of people are now shifting to the internet as the new information center of the world and what we are witnessing right now is nothing less than the rise of a new economy -- a digital economy – a new global medium that will be the single most important global driver of business, economic and social change in the world. The future of information technology will be coming from our communities, they are the new media and it is vital that we provide an avenue for the next generation to grow and be empowered.

Failure is not always an option. If your solution fails to gain traction in the next two years, what other applications of the idea could you explore?

The Philippines is still a developing nation, only seven (7) percent of the households owned personal computers, as of 2003 (FLEAMMS), it simply means that there is a lot for us to take advantage of. Even if, our junk or destroyed computers recondition would fail, there is a lot of option available for us to use in order to reach our target market. One of the methods available for is the rent-to-own system, based on history the United States of America’s appliance and furniture grew out of this system.

At present, we are using “refer a friend” method, this idea empowers are consumers and the person endorsing our product. Each of them will earn, the one endorsing will earn a commission while the friend being endorsed to us will earn a sale discount for every purchase of the reconditioned computer. Refer a friend method is ideal in a country where majority of the population are underemployed; it will enable them to earn more extra income through referring their friends to buy our product.

Expand on your selections, explaining how you will sustain funding

One of the problems that I am currently facing is the funding however it will not stop me from achieving my goals. I am fortunate that I have friends and family members who are willing to extend their limited financial resource for my business. Though this resources are not enough to fully realize my business idea but I must learn to live by it. With every sales I will earn, a portion of the net income will be stored for further expansion of the business and the rest will be used to pay my debt.

Tell us about your partnerships
What type of team (staff, volunteers, etc.) will ensure that you achieve the growth milestones identified in the Social Impact section?

As of this moment I have no regular employee. I only have part time computer engineering students assisting me in the production of reconditioned computers. What matters to these students is their passion for computers and innovations. They are hungry for knowledge. What binds us is our passion and it is one of the essential elements for success. What really drives us is our collective passion to provide internet connectivity, we know that they are a lot of obstacles ahead of us but it doesn't really matter how hard it is as long as we reach our goal.

What is my immediate need is additional funding for my business. Primarily because they are a lot of junk or destroyed computer set sitting on the dump site. It is important that I can purchase those junk or destroyed computers as soon as possible so that it's toxic substance can be properly contained and the rest of it be used for the production. I am also interested in additional information or research in terms of recyclable electronics materials to utilize.
