The Radio La Savane Energie is a community effort in response to the needs of the population in Kakwa County and beyond for information about the area, the problems and solutions.

The population in Kakwa County lives in relative ignorance in what is happening around them, in the county, in the country and even beyond. Radio La Savane Energie wants to use their broadcasts to train, inform and teach the population in order to cultivate unity in the county. The station was officially opened and started broadcasting on 31 July 2009.
Sustainability

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Radio La Savane Energie is the only radio station operating in Kakwa County and has the support of the Kakwa deputy to the government of the county. The radio station responds to a need felt in the communities to have their own radio station with information and education about issues of interest to them. The broadcasts can be followed in the whole Kakwa County and even beyond and reaches out to a population of around 150,000 - 200,000 people.

To solve the problem of the relative ignorance of the population of Kakwa County Radio La Savane Energie started broadcasting on 31 July 2009. The radio is involved in discussing topics that have the attention of the population, like AIDS, agriculture, family issues, security, relationships, church, culture, and many more.

Many people own a radio and listen to the radio broadcasts of Radio La Savane Energie to be updated on what is happening in their area. Broadcasts, like the broadcast about AIDS, are discussed in listeners groups. People are encouraged to come to community activities, or national ones, like the inscription to vote in the national elections the end of this year. Broadcasts are done in various languages, French, Lingala, Kakwa, and English.

What is your projected impact within the next 1-5 years? Is your idea replicable? If so, how?

The population of Kakwa County is listening to the broadcasts of Radio La Savane Energie.
The Kakwa living in Uganda and Sudan are also listening.
Projects of community development in different areas are seen as a result of the radio broadcasts.

After reception of funding, buy all the necessary equipment and find the people to install it.

What barriers have hindered the success of your project to date? How do you plan to overcome these and other challenges as you grow your solution?

The power supply is through generators. Fuel is expensive and sometimes scarce. To have a reliable and constant power supply Radio La Savane Energie searches to install a solar system as power supply for the radio.

How do you see the information-technology and media sectors shifting over the next decade? How will your solution adapt to and/or drive that changing environment?

Solar power is expensive to buy but in the long run is cheaper than fuel. Also, when the power supply is regular the radio station can expand. We can think here about television. To generate income, we also can think about the establishment of an internet cafe.

Failure is not always an option. If your solution fails to gain traction in the next two years, what other applications of the idea could you explore?

Failure is not an option as the radio responds to a need of the community. Through community actions we will try to generate the money necessary to buy the solar equipment.

The presenters of particular programs are asked for a small contribution to be able to broadcast their program.

Partnership is with the Kakwa deputy to the national government, with the population of Kakwa County, with the churches and NGO active in the area, with the medical autorities in the region, with the schools.

What type of team (staff, volunteers, etc.) will ensure that you achieve the growth milestones identified in the Social Impact section?

The volunteer team of Radio La Savane Energie (director, administrator, journalists, financial administrator, and laborers), together with the people in the local communities and the presenters of the different programs, will make sure that growth in the minsitry of the radio station will continue and be sustainable.
