Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

The project will enable the Youth to take the lead and tackle issues affecting their community by using a tool for collecting actionable data through cell phones and the internet. Reports are automatically uploaded and organized on a digital map into issue areas and urgency.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

To live up to the notion of Young Europeans, Youth of Kosovo must become the catalyst for the country's development.
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

We want to combat the root problem that is an ever increasing lack of engagement of the youth of Kosovo in community work and in decision making processes. This detachment was also sustained by previous governance practices which were not aiming to explore and implement such tool for direct feedback loops. The lack of an effective instrument for understanding the difficulties that the population face daly in their surroundings and to solve them.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

A creative media campaign will introduce and resultantly recruit young individuals interested in the concept of digital mapping. At first we want to recruit 50 community members, organize a series of activities and workshops focusing on embracing technology, leadership spirit, and community advocacy. We are going to provide for a customized version of the Voices of Youth GIS in all working languages of Kosovo, and will train our team to master it. While the work in the field cultivate team spirit, will foster critical thinking skills, will produce youth created maps and location based reports. Consequently, the socializing effect between youth mappers about their living conditions and civic mapping achievements will inspire fellow peers.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

From the perspective of the young adolescents involved in the project they will get the opportunity for self actualization and to become a vital part of the effort to upgrade our democracy through going out in the streets and mapping their community with diverse tools and inserting data collected in a system that presents visually the findings and creates an action plan for needed remedy. The user will not need to rely on conventional methods of communicating with the municipality administration, or the responsible company for providing the remedy for a complete set of faulty stairs that are posing a great risk of injury to everyone who pass there. The automated and transparent platform will bring all community actors together in one place.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Globally the platform is proving to be a great success in Brazil and in Haiti, as it has been also deployed in other places, Kosovo will extend the platform to this part of the world. In the first year of implementation we want to reach the number of 200 young individuals trained and experienced in field-work of the project. We are going to work towards the first milestone of 500 registered citizens from the city of Prishtina in our internet platform and social media pages. Unlike the map of Prishtina on Google Maps which lacks detailed clarity, we are going to create the street-view feature for the public areas of several major neighborhoods in Prishtina as to provide for detailed representation of the problem identified. The Municipality Administration and the Contracted Companies commitment will spotlight their good work by responding in due time to address the needs of citizens.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

We are going to appeal for financial support to the Municipality of Prishtina who have fledged to support youth driven activities and instruments that will enable them to establish direct contact with constituents. We are currently in negotiation with them to establish a fund to support the project activities. After one year our project will appeal to multiple Municipalities and will grow slowly to national level.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

We have considered other means to enable us the production of desired ends. In this regard we have looked at other platforms for mapping communities and acknowledge that in some aspects they are better than our platform. However, when we reached a final decision we all agreed that the main aspect was not technological perfection but rather focus in the socio-economic landscape of Kosovo, and in receiving the help of an international organization in this project will increase our success emancipate youth towards leadership and community development.
Team

Founding Story

We were constantly thinking of a way to combat an ever increasing habit of individuals complaining about their surroundings or elected representatives, most of these people also share the opinion that as a community member the entire locus of control is in the leaders who supposedly are not receptive to citizen concerns. We wanted to defy the status quo and were thinking of creating a mechanism that would serve as a tool to bring all community members together. After sessions of brainstorming we defined that we wanted to generate data, make it presently appealing to audience, and to enhance our democracy with an update. We did not have to re-invent the wheel, as days later we stumbled upon an urgent call by UNICEF to test their platform.

Impact
Full Impact Potential: What are the main spread strategies moving forward? (Please consider geographic spread, policy reform, and independent replication/adoption of the idea or other mechanisms.)

The idea is to begin with small steps in each neighborhood of Prishtina as to nurture the trust gradually while resonated success stories from these actions will attract more interest from people from other local communities. After one year, we estimate to map entirely the city of Prishtina and to spread to rural areas within the Municipality boundaries. At that point in time, other Municipalities of Kosovo will ask for establishing project chapters in their locations. The first year participants will be promoted and will train young leaders in these new locations on community mapping.

Barriers: What barriers might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

Two great barriers are related to privacy issues. There are people who would want to use the platform directly without registering or having to log in, however to avoid the misuse of posting inappropriate or waste material to the platform we are including a register form that allows for creating a username as to avoid using the full name of the user. Also, while creating the community street-view feature in the digital map, people must approve if they want to make visible their private land. For this reason we are going to specifically try to cover public spaces.

Sustainability
Partnerships: Tell us about your partnerships.

We have received seed funding with the UNICEF Innovations Lab in Kosovo, while we have agreed on a concept note with UNICEF Voices of Youth to extend the mapping project to Kosovo. At the same time we are in the process of signing a Memorandum Of Understanding with the Administration of the Municipality of Prishtina.

Closing the Loop
How does your project primarily ensure that feedback delivers results?

Demonstrate how closed feedback loops can make a difference in people’s lives.

Please elaborate on your answer to the above question.

Looking at our idea it is clear to understand that most of the results listed above are represented. In exception to the second one due to the fact that in the beginning of the project we are going to work specifically with the youth population. However we anticipate that in due time the feedback will be representative of the entire population, especially after the first year of implementation when the project spreads to other parts of Kosovo. In regards to the one result most central to our work we believe that each result shares equal importance to us as we aim at creating a better future.

Languages: In what languages are you able to read and write fluently?

English.
