About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

One of the main challenges NGO’s face in Mexico, is the lack of resources and information, specially the grass root organizations. The lack of accessible information and resources are a constraint to scale up their projects, collaborate and know what others are doing and their impact. As Sumando Esfuerzos we asked ourselves: How can organizations have a bigger impact collaborating? How can we help make information more accessible?

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Sumando Esfuerzos will tackle the problem through different tools: Information. Give information about organizations’ work in a region or specific activities. This can will make it easier to find grass-root organizations, their work, which ones work on a specific topic or region. Also, make social sector' relevant information available: campaigns, resources, events, etc. Collaboration. Organizations will be able to look for organizations working on a specific topic or place, so they can collaborate with each other. There will be different tools to collaborate. Ideas. They will be able to organize conferences, campaigns or any other collaborative action through the platform. As well as look for support for new ones.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Suppose there is an organization “x” saying: “ I work with women in rural communities in Mexico and I need to find an organization that works with Education in rural areas to work with us”. They can use Sumando Esfuerzos webpage to network with them. Additionally the Sumando Esfuerzos platform allows organization “x“ to find campaigns, success stories of similar projects and collaborate with other organizations in order to find a common objective in the communities and scale up impact. Using the Sumando Esfuerzos platform will ensure the organization involved in the Sumando Esfuerzos platform cover the principles of transparency, collaboration, and efficiency.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Sumando Esfuerzos is a project with different stages. We are currently in the first one: developing the idea. We are doing research, connecting with nonprofits, networks, academics and experts in the area to receive the best feedback possible. Our second stage will be working with specific organizations. This stage will be a one on one connection. Our measurement will be the number of projects we are working on, how many collaborations and the follow up and results of the collaboration scheme. The creation of the platform will be done with the information collected from the first 2 stages: research and projects. This will allow us to create a platform with information about nonprofits projects. The platforms will be considered successful according to the daily users, number of connections, creation of campaigns and number of responses for the necessities of other organizations.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

In the first stage of the project, the project has been self-funded. But as it grow we have thought of two ways to fund it: First, we will apply for funding through different fellowships, foundations, and looks for sponsorships. But the goal is to develop a fee mechanism where organizations, or other actors looking to post a specific challenge, or receive personalized guidance will be charged a small fee.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There exist other networks working on specific social topics. We have in Mexico member-only networks as CEMEFI, new ones like VIRAL focused on youth projects but our focus is on collaboration and information. We will develop the tools for the organizations to collaborate in an easy way and access relevant information easily. Including different social topics and tackle specific needs.

Founding Story

When we were just out of college, Ariadne and I worked in different social projects. Part of our work was to do research on similar project for specific organizations. It was quite surprising how difficult was to find this information! With all the overload of information we had to do a lot of research to find what was going on in Mexico regarding a specific social project. Specially difficult to find small projects! So... how could we make information more accessible? How could they learn from each others' failures, successful results etc.? That is how Sumando Esfuerzos idea was born, and the rest of the team joined as they got excited about it, each giving new ideas to think about and together working to make it work!

Full Impact Potential: What are the main spread strategies moving forward? (Please consider geographic spread, policy reform, and independent replication/adoption of the idea or other mechanisms.)

The ultimate impact would be for organizations to collaborate on a specific need in the region. Let's say, there is a need to decrease violence in a region and organizations could use Sumando Esfuerzos to collaborate for a specific solution in the long-term. It is also a tool for immediate response, as a need for a campaign or specific needs. If an organization needs the specialized work of other organization. And with information this is the first step.

Barriers: What barriers might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

One of the barriers we have found is the lack of participation from organizations in networks with no incentives. We have though about, what would make an organization collaborate in a long-term goal, in helping other organizations. Specially as they have scarce resources themselves. Our idea is to create specific incentives, like challenges, and look for other sector investors for a specific goal. So organizations will get involved in a challenge with a specific reward.

Partnerships: Tell us about your partnerships.

We are looking to partner with other networks, and try to take advantage of the current database of the non-profit sector.

Closing the Loop
How does your project primarily ensure that feedback delivers results?

Facilitate a conversation that combines wisdom of the crowds with the perspective of experts.

Please elaborate on your answer to the above question.

First of all, make the information of the sector available and accessible. Who is working on what. Information is the first step for transparency and engagement. Second, the organizations will be able to collaborate with other organizations, experts and other sectors for a specific need. The collaboration platform will make non-profits and other actors be more involved in what is being done in a region, topic or country. What is missing and what has been achieved. We want this platform to be for and by the non-profits and their needs.

Languages: In what languages are you able to read and write fluently?
