Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

International project to take and present stunning night photos of world's best historic and natural sites with background of moon, stars and celestial events by cooperation of selected photographers in different countries. The result will appear in worldwide exhibitions, will be published in book/DVDs and on TWAN website. The project bring photographers, astronomers, and organizations from around the world in an international team work. But the main purpose is to make new public vision to global wonders and to describe humans as a one family; To present our world as one living planet to care and to love. Majority of human struggles has happened because of boundaries and territories we made with religions, beliefs, different races. There is no border in the sky,and no border for people who love the nigthsky. We all see the same sky. Taking quality photos of nightsky over the world's attractions is not only a new approach to learn more about our planet and human history, also a new method to show our unity with photos of natural heritages, churches, mosques and temples all under one eternal-peacefull sky.It indicates unity of religions and people regardless of their race and territory, and unity of our lands as a single lovely planet we all should care for it rather than care for our selfishly aims. The project is organized by AstronomersWithoutBorders(NGO to make bridge and peace between people through astronomy/nightsky).We will run TWAN website to present photos and information, contact photographers, select the sites by research,Archive the already available photos, financial managing the project and seeking supports by related organizations like UNESCO,finding local contacts and conditions to plan for photography sessions,Plan for timeline/photographer for each site according to local and celestial conditions,Support photographers while on mission, archive the resulted photos,Managing activities needed for exhibitions and publications, establish ideas on expanding the project.

Innovation
Description of initiative:

Description of innovation:

Although there has been landscape astrophotography going on by professional photographers and many exhibitions with such photos presented in, including my own exhibitions in Iran and in number of European countries, there has never been a similar project of taking and presenting night time photos of the world most eye-catching and notable cemeteries with background of stars and glories celestial events as a project to be done by best astrophotographers in different countries which aim for bringing new peaceful public vision to our planet and bringing unity to people in different countries. Bringing peace by the way of night sky. Through the photos of TWAN, the peaceful eternal night sky connect symbols of different regions of the world, as a bridge to connect people and bring the idea of Earth, not as complex of human territories, but a single beautiful planet we call home. there will be much less struggle between people who share a common infinite territory without any borders; between people who share a belief in loving a part of nature in access to any one on the planet who look up. Night sky is a pure beauty for those with interest to nature and is a laboratory freely open to every science explorer in the world. For those with interest to wonders of nightsky, there is a deep potential friendship. They will be connected through the bridge of a common priority and ideology they gain by wondering at nightsky. On the other hand we all see the same sky. You might be amazed by beauty of shining Venus in Texas, while sky gazers in Tehran share the same view few hours earlier. The legendry stars of the Great Bear might be viewed over Vatican, while Buddhist share the same celestial view over their temples. The magnificent Milky Way might be viewed over Grand Canyon while people of Nepal amaze by the same celestial view over Himalaya.

Delivery model:

The idea would impact people by Photo exhibitions/slide shows/Seminar in different countries, specially the ones with a host photographer. Website of the TWAN project. TV programs presented in different countries, organized by Astronomers Without Borders (AWB) organization. Through the international programs by AWB organization. The book " The World At Night", with photos of the project and their descriptions. Multimedia DVD, includes photos, descriptions of all the sites that has been photographed, peace ideas of the project, global ecological issues of the planet, growing light pollution problem in the planet, interviews with the photographers and information on how they take the photos. Post cards and etc ...

Key operational partnerships:

Beside science journalism,I'm a professional landscape atrophotographer.I have been in contact with many photographers through my website(www.dreamview.net),my exhibitions/slide shows and trips to chase solar eclipses around the world.Dozens of world-class astrophotographers will cooperate TWAN in different levels, from contribute photos to representing TWAN in local TV programs, holding exhibitions, managing the website, etc... A major potential cooperation would be with UNESCO, since most of the TWAN sites are UNESCO world heritage.AWB would suggest UNESCO different ideas on TWAN including exhibitions in UN-New York and UNESCO-Paris, to bring the TWAN peace idea to representatives of countries. International Darksky Association based in US, would be another partner. IDA is already partner of our AWB organization and with over 10,000 active members in 80 countries it's huge potential support to bring TWAN to people in the world. Another potential partner is APOD; world known NASA based website of Astronomy Picture of the Day(http://apod.nasa.gov) which publish world best astrophotos and already archived number of photos targeted for TWAN. APOD is a great bridge with some of the photographers we need. I met with APOD director at Goddard-NASA recently and cooperation is promissing.Sky&Telescope and Astronomy, the world two leading astronomy magazines with world wide subscribers, has already started cooperation with AWB and most likely they will be TWAN partners.

Impact
Financial model:

In order to have TWAN as a widely affective project, there need to be many exhibitions in different countries, high quality book, and TV programs. Many of these would be planed and progressed by help of local contacts and also funds which will be raised by AWB organization, through contacts with supportive organizations including UNESCO. In order to run the project, there need to be fund for paying photo credits and travel costs (if the photo has not yet taken) of photographers. For the continuation of the project, there need to be TWAN photo bank which will receive orders through the website or exhibitions and slide shows for use in variety of personal, media and publication. The income will be shares with photographers and they will receive supportive money to continue taking new photos

Costs as percentage of income:

--

Financing:

AWB has set for no financial benefits by TWAN and will gain many contacts and Cooperation which the project will bring. Considering the least number of 100 sites for the project, there need to be over $200,000 fund to cover organizing staff and facilities costs, to cover photo credits and travel payments, and for the first major exhibition in US. For the rest including the book, and other exhibitions there need to be publisher support and local supports in different countries. For the continuation of the project, there need to be TWAN photo bank which will receive orders through the website or exhibitions/slide shows to be used personal/media/publication.The income will be shared with photographers, encouraging to keep taking new photos of the world magnificent sites at night.

Scaling up strategy:
Stage of the initiative:

Start Up stage.

Expansion plan:

The project is in the phase of basic planning and making first contacts. As planned the first phase of making a desirable collection of photos to start the website and first exhibition need 1 year from the formal start time in late 2007. The major opening exhibition of TWAN would be planned for year 2009, which has been announced as international astronomy year. The exhibition could be also suggested to International astronomy Union general assembly (the world's largest astronomy conference every three years) in 2009. TWAN book (first edition) need to print out by 2009 to be presented in the opening exhibition. Also the TWAN website which will continue support the idea in far future, make contests and attract photographers from different countries to submit new pictures of the planet beauties under starry night. It will also present as a unique photobank for media and publications.

Origin of the initiative:

The idea of TWAN first came when I was a younger photographer traveling Iran with Oshin Zakarian, co- photographer of dreamview.net. We didn't have high-end equipment for deep sky(nebula, galaxy, clusters)photography which is what most astrophotographers do. We started taking nightsky photos with simple mechanical camera and tripod. To result unique photos we started taking starry photos over the country's remote archeological and natural sites(some UNESCO heritage sites). Our photos started to be published in world's best astronomy magazines.Taking nightsky photos with foreground of old mosques, churches, temples led to the idea of wonderful unity of nightsky over symbols of cultures and religions; Moslems to Catholics,to Zoroastrians. When I started traveling the world to chase solar eclipses I started taking nightsky photos over sites of other continents; Africa, Europe,America and Antarctica
