Innovation
What is the goal of your innovation?

To make and maintain a qualitative internal ambiance in Latvian families which will help to appreciate and save Latvian and global nature, culture and traditions.

How does your approach support or embody geotourism?

It is necessary to help local people to feel the world they are living in and assure them to act responsibly with it. These values have to be taught to Latvians and inherited from one generation to another. It is necessary to breed a long-term „life chain” which has pride of who we are, feels responsible and is willing not to be insensitive.
By developing sustainable idea in local people we preserve Latvian and global nature, culture and traditions. This is the reason why the target audience of this campaign is Latvian families. Raising up a child in a qualitative world we show it values needed for a long-term „life chain”. The program of each event is based on informative and interactive shows, presentations and attractions which address the main issues on making children day-care high-valued.

Describe your approach in detail. How is it innovative?

We shall organize five events during August and September, 2008. These events will take place in four largest cities of Latvia regions. The final one will take place in capital city Riga. Those shall be out-door events where with a help of interactive presentations attendants will be informed about sustainability itself and places, products or services which can support sustainability in Latvia.
As mentioned above the target audience of campaign is Latvian families. That is why the program of each event is made of two big blocks – “High-valude ambience for children” and “Sustainability”.
The first one is based on informative and interactive shows or presentations which inform attendants about the main questions in making the child day care high-valued - safety and medicine, wholesome food and the social life for children which is the way to avoid „the forbidden fruit”. Shows, presentations and attractions are organized in cooperation with the members of this campaign – promoters, supporters and different companies and persons who want to present their products or services.
The Sustainability block is organized together with ecotourism destinations of Latvia. Ecotourism destination representatives shall present to attendants what each of their destination offers thereby informing people on tourism opportunities in their own country. There are many ecotourism destinations in Latvia of which people might even know but not many are aware how valuable those place are and how important it is to preserve them.
At these events people will be provided an opportunity not only to know about sustainability but to realize that they are already supporting it because part of income of the event is donated to local community.
This approach is innovative because Latvians are not informed on how unique the destination which they live in is and that ecotourism destinations nearby them can and do contribute to sustainability of our society.

What types of partnerships or professional development would be most beneficial in spreading your innovation?

We plan to organize our events in August and September 2008 and we need support of local governments, local media and entrepreneurs to promote our events and communicate their importance and idea to the local communities. Only support of local community can guarantee maximum possible attendance of our events and thereby maximum amount of people will benefit from our project.

Impact
In one sentence describe what kind of impact, change, or reform your approach is intended to achieve.

By developing the idea of sustainability in Latvian families, people will think and act responsible with a world they are living in.

Describe the degree of success of your approach to date. Clearly define how you measure quantitative and qualitative impact in terms of how your approach contributes to the sustainability or enhancement of local culture, environment, heritage, or aesthetics? How does your approach minimize negative impacts? 200 words or less

The events are still to take place in August 2008. At the moment it is all at the development stage but we have received a great interest in our project from tourism destinations and organizations involved in sustainability projects. At the moment the project does not have any actual impact on sustainability or enhancement of local culture, environment, heritage, or aesthetics, but it shall have a direct impact on it all after completion of the project. It will be possible to evaluate the impact only after a longer while, for increase of support to ecotourism due to our project shall result in contributions to sustainability of Latvian community and environment.

How does your program promote traveler enthusiasm, satisfaction, and engagement with the locale?

Our campaign is itself intended to involve local residents in making a qualitative and high-valued ambience which will support sustainability in Latvia.

In what ways are local residents actively involved in your innovation, including participation and community input? How has the community responded to or benefited from your approach?

They are involved by having an opportunity to attend our events. The local ecotourism destinations will be given an opportunity to promote themselves at our events and local people will be informed on tourism opportunities. In addition to that Latvian communities will benefit from our events because part of income will be donated to them.

Describe how your innovation helps travelers and local residents better understand the value of the area’s cultural and natural heritage, and educates them on local environmental issues. How do you motivate them to act responsibly in their future travel decisions?

Our events shall educate and inform their attendants, which will mainly be local people, of ecotourism destinations within territory of Latvia. The very idea of each event is to promote idea of sustainable tourism and living and thereby to make people understand the value of their own cultural and natural heritage. We shall motivate attendants of our events to act responsibly in their future travel decisions by presenting them benefits to their own environment which can be achieved by each of us acting responsibly.

Sustainability
Is your initiative financially and organizationally sustainable? If not, what is required to make it so? What is the potential demand for your innovation?

Our initiative has not raised any substantial financing yet, nevertheless we have started fundraising campaign and negotiations with potential partners. We intend to establish long-term cooperation with various organizations involved in tourism, media, governmental authorities, NGOs and others supporting and working for sustainability of Latvia’s environment and society. This is not intended as a short-term project for organization of a couple of events only, though these events are the first phase of this project. This is intended as a long-term activity for promotion of Latvia as an ecotourism destination to Latvians themselves and to other countries. The next phase shall be activities in regard to promotion of Latvia as an ecotourism destination to foreign countries.

How is your initiative currently financed? If available, provide information on your finances and organization that could help others. Please list: Annual budget, annual revenue generated, size of part-time, full-time and volunteer staff.

At the development stage of the project is pro bono work performed by its organizers. At the moment we invest our own time and resources into development of this project. So far five people are involved at the development stage of the project. We intend to hire staff for technical support of each event, but the administration is intended to remain the same throughout the project. There is no annual budget at the moment but there is an estimate budget for organization of each event within the first phase of the project, and it has to be taken into account that the budget of each event is different taking into consideration different locations of events.

What is your plan to expand your approach? Please indicate where/how you would like to grow or enhance your innovation, or have others do so.

After realization of the first phase of the project we plan to continue to work on the idea of sustainable tourism and to act as a promoter of Latvia as an ecotourism destination in cooperation with governmental authorities working on Latvia’s tourism PR.

What are the main barriers you encounter in managing, implementing, or replicating your innovation? What barriers keep your program from having greater impact?

The main barrier we expect to encounter is ignorance of local governments, entrepreneurs and local communities of the idea of sustainability and responsible travel. As soon as we convince others of importance and effect of these ideas on development and sustainability of our own country and environment, there should be no significant barrier for successful realization of the first phase of the project as well as further development of our innovation.

The Story
What is the origin of your innovation? Tell your story.

By now there are five of us involved in this project and willing to do something high-minded and globally helpful. People have become insensitive and selfish in nowadays. Everybody is looking for a plastic luxury and comfort counting the material things they have. It’s a pity that people don’t remember how to count the blessings anymore!
Snowflakes on your nose, grandma pancakes with red and sweet strawberries on them and snows fighting with kids from neighborhood…These are just a few of our childhood memories. We don’t want to be so selfish and make our kids to take for granted such things as dried out meadows, fear from rain and tornados destroying our home. We believe that we are still strong enough to save the world by changing the relationship between human and nature.
The values of today’s society are out of order and we want to fix them!

My daily business is inbound tourism services and event organization for companies and individuals. The motto I work with - I enjoy making people smile. My spare time is taken up with spending time with five year old son Toms and travelling of course.
