Green tourism is a concept not yet widely spread throughout Ukraine, but many contemporary social problems are caused or aggravated by the persistence of unemployment and by low involvement of women into business activity in rural areas.

The project is to develop strategy and operational plan for mainstreaming green tourism (Geotourism, ecotourism, ogranic food production and social tourism) opportunity in 3 Oblasts of Ukraine. There is the high potential for development this activity aimed at fair sharing of work, resources, and benefits among all members of participating families and communities.

What is the goal of your innovation?

To rebirth Ukrainian traditions of community interhelping and share this practice on the local community and global community as well.

How does your approach support or embody geotourism?

Modern tourist like to find smth interesting and unusual from other cultures and in the same time to put smth useful for the community. In this case “TOLOKA Interhelping” tourist find out and fall in the old fashion Ukraine tradition how people survive by tolerance and helping each other. Everybody who join to the “TOLOKA interhelping” will take the chance to learn traditions, to communicate with other tourists volunteers, to build / rebuild house, to learn how develop green tourism opportunity, to see local sites and historical places.

Describe your approach in detail. How is it innovative?

Follow to my own research this type of tourism does not exist yet. But many people from all the world are looking for the chance to do smth like it. We have announce this program on our site and have a lot of letters from people who like to join.
The innovation is to wake people up from their homeland to help others in strange country.
And also innovative thing consist in joining tourism, learning and practice how to build, do this house the tourist object and help to start business.

Creating new tipe of global communacation - to give people the practical instrument for survive, to get people to feel how good job they did

Describe the degree of success of your approach to date. Clearly define how you measure quantitative and qualitative impact in terms of how your approach contributes to the sustainability or enhancement of local culture, environment, heritage, or aesthetics? How does your approach minimize negative impacts? 200 words or less

1) we delivering the project "Green tourism opportunities for the women in rural area". 2) we delivering the education program "Start green tourism business" 3) we have taught 3 groups of people from 4 regions of Ukraine how to start and operate own business in green tourism and organic food production. 4) now we announce the program to help some of the group to rebuilds their houses for tourists.
Quantitative impact: 1) 40 people have educated how to start and operate own business in the field of green tourism; 10 of them start this business already;
2) 10 youth have learned the special “Ukraine folk traditions” classes last summer in Poland on the special master classes
Qualitative impact 1)we changed the mind of local authority and they include our project into first National Tourism program “Golden circle of Charkas”
2) we find out a lot of people in all the world who looking for to do smth useful for the strange community by their own impact. This people do not like to pay for the funds but like to got and to do..

How does your program promote traveler enthusiasm, satisfaction, and engagement with the locale?

This program already promote traveler enthusiasm because of many people mailed us to participate.
They hope on satisfaction from helping other to start and operate green tourism opportunities,
rebirth Ukrainian villages and creating new work places for people in rural areas in the field of green tourism, to learn Ukraine traditions, to get practice how to build / rebuild and to impact as professionals.
The local people interested in the program because of they understand the importance of it for own and local development.

In what ways are local residents actively involved in your innovation, including participation and community input? How has the community responded to or benefited from your approach?

Form 40 people we have educated already 10 start own business and other looking for the opportunity to start. This good example of “TOLOKA interhelping” have be done to involve other in geo tourism development. It will create additional work places in the areas were is the high level of employment youth have leaving for big cities. People like to do this business but have not enough funds and good examples we would like to show them.

Describe how your innovation helps travelers and local residents better understand the value of the area’s cultural and natural heritage, and educates them on local environmental issues. How do you motivate them to act responsibly in their future travel decisions?

The right Dnipro river side Ukraine is considered by crib of Ukrainian and European culture. There is more than 3000 historical memorandums. The beautiful wood, meadow, lake and rivers fall in love everybody who at least has once visited these place. Traditions of interhalping and tolerances among Ukrainian rural people -a beautiful example of the public dormitory.
People understand their profit from tourism and they believe the tourist is looking for the cultural / historical places, traditions, clear surrounding. They interested to keep environment clear attract tourists and get profit.

On this stage we need with some funds to cover travel costs and forage those volunteers who would like to join "TOLOKA interhelping" This people show strong interest to see Ukraine cultural and historical places and will good promoter to others. They will attract tourist to revive Ukraine villages.

What is your plan to expand your approach? Please indicate where/how you would like to grow or enhance your innovation, or have others do so.

We plan to expand our approach by involving and good example.
We also would like to share this good example of Ukraine folk traditions to other countries. And we did it partly last summer in Poland, were we were learn youth for Ukraine folk songs and dances and show the performance on the main city’s square in Sobotka.

What are the main barriers you encounter in managing, implementing, or replicating your innovation? What barriers keep your program from having greater impact?

lack of the knowledges about possibility of geotourism among rural inhabitants, lack of finance aid, corruption, indifference officials. Most of all this tipe of activity is new for people who live in Ukraine rural areas, especially in Chercas region. This region was the territory to growing wheat and tourism was located only in towns.
We have broke the ice already when start to teach people and find the lane to officials

The Story
What is the origin of your innovation? Tell your story.

When I was a child parents told me the story how all village get together to help to build the house for newlyweds. This story impressed me a lot. The big house that appeared in one week by the joined forces of volunteers have keep my mind for ages. Am reminded this fact when we tried to find the way to help people to rebuild their houses to invite tourists. It was good idea to revive the traditions and houses! Am share this idea among group am trained how to start and operate own business in green tourism. It should be a part of geotourism development we design!!
