WE HAVE COME TO FIND FEW EFFECTIVE TOOLS FOR THE PSYCHOSOCIAL REHABILITATION OF CHILDREN IN CONFLICT AREAS ARE AVAILABLE. IN PARTICULAR, WE FIND A DIFFICULT TIME LOCATING INNOVATIVE TOOLS AND PROGRAMS THAT ARE FUN THAT ALLOW THE CHILDREN TO INTERACT WITH OTHERS IN THE GREATER COMMUNITY ON A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD.

THE IDEA IS TO USE THE POWERFUL INFLUENCE OF SPORT (BASKETBALL) AS A MEANS OF PSYCHOSOCIAL REHABILITATION AND COMMUNITY INTEGRATION OF THE CHINAR KIDS.

Describe your innovation. What makes your idea unique and different than others doing work in the field?

FOR THE LAST 17 YEARS KASHMIR HAS BEEN PLAGUED BY EXCESSIVE VIOLENCE THAT HAS LEFT AN ESTIMATED 100 THOUSAND CHILDREN ORPHANED. MOST OF THESE CHILDREN ARE IGNORED AND MANY END UP IN A LIFE OF VIOLENCE. FOR THOSE THAT ARE HELPED, AID IS LIMITED TO A 'BASIC NEEDS' APPROACH.THESE CHILDREN SUFFER FROM MENTAL TRAUMA INCLUDING SOCIAL, SPIRITUAL AND EMOTIONAL DYSFUNCTION. CHINAR IS A NOVEL ORGANIZATION CREATED TO SUPPORT THE PSYCHOSOCIAL REHABILITATION OF THESE KIDS.THE PROPOSED BASKETBALL PROGRAM HAS SEEN RESULTS AS WE ESTABLISHED A DIRECT LINK WITH SPORT AND THE MENTAL PROGRESS OF CHILDREN, NEVER BEFORE ADDRESSED IN KASHMIR. WE INTEND TO INVOLVE THE LOCAL COMMUNITY IN A POSITIVE WAY WHILE RAISING AWARENESS OF THE PROBLEM OF ORPHANS IN KASHMIR IN A NON-THREATENING ATMOSPHERE.CURRENTLY THERE IS NO GOVERNMENT OR PRIVATE PROGRAM THAT ATTEMPTS TO USE THIS APPROACH.IMPORTANTLY THIS PROGRAM IS INEXPENSIVE TO SUSTAIN AND CAN BECOME INSTITUTIONALIZED VERY QUICKLY.

What are the existing barriers, the biggest problem, your innovation is hoping to address/change?

IN KASHMIR THERE HAS BEEN VERY LITTLE FOCUS ON FIDING CREATIVE WAYS TO HELP CHILDREN OF CONFLICT HEAL FROM THE TRAUMA CAUSED BY VIOLENCE.WHILE YOU CAN FEED,CLOTHE AND EDUCATE A CHILD WHO HAS SUFFERED, CHINAR BELIEVES YOU MUST ALSO GIVE THEM TOOLS TO BE A MENTALLY HEALTHY, WELL INTEGRATED MEMBER OF SOCIETY. THIS PROPOSED BASKETBALL PROGRAM WILL BE HIGH PROFILE AND DEMONSTRATE TO THE GOVERNMENT AND THE COMMUNITY THE POWER OF SPORT.

Delivery Model: How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing?

CHINAR BEGAN WORKING WITH THE JD WALSH BASKETBALL SCHOOL (WWW.JDBASKETBALL.COM) IN 2007 TO CONDUCT A 3 YEAR BASKETBALL PROGRAM.PHASE ONE WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL AS WE INTRODUCED THE SPORT TO THE KIDS THROUGH AN INTENSIVE 3-DAY SKILLS TRAINING/TEAM BUILDING PROGRAM. THE EVENT GARNERED NATIONAL ATTENTION, BRINGING TO LIGHT THE PROBLEM AND THIS NEW INNOVATIVE SOLUTION. PHASE TWO INVOLVES JD BASKETBALL RECRUITING AND TRAINING A STAFF THAT CAN TRAVEL TO KASHMIR AND ONE LOCAL COACH TO BUILD A SUSTAINABLE BASKETBALL PROGRAM.IN ADDITION WE WILL PROVIDE FOR REGULAR PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF THE CHILDREN TO MEASURE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF OUR PROGRAM. PHASE THREE WILL FOCUS ON BUILDING AN ON-SITE COURT AND DEVELOPING A TEAM THAT CAN TRAVEL TO COMPETE, AS BASKETBALL IS A FAST GROWING INDIAN SPORT. WE HAVE ALREADY BEGUN CREATING SOCIAL ALLIANCES WITH THE GOVERNMENT, LOCAL BUSINESSES, AND SCHOOLS. THE JD WALSH BASKETBALL SCHOOL HAS A STRONG GLOBAL TRACK RECORD OF CREATING SOCIALLY INTEGRATED BASKETBALL PROGRAMS. HENCE, THE SUCCESS RATE IS VERY HIGH.

How do you plan to grow your innovation?

OUR PLAN IS TO GROW THE PROGRAM BY INSTITUTIONALIZING IT AT CHINAR AND THEN BRINGING IN OTHER CHILDREN BOTH FROM ORPHANAGES AS WELL AS LOCAL SCHOOLS.ONCE WE HAVE A PROPER COACH AND A SKILLS TRAINING TEAM THAT CAN COME TO KASHMIR TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL COACHING TWICE A YEAR, IT BECOMES A VERY SCALABLE PROGRAM INTO WHICH MORE AND MORE CHILDREN CAN BE INCOPORATED. THIS WILL BE THE KEY TO USING THE SPORT AS A TOOL FOR TRUE COMMUNITY INTEGRATION.AS CHINAR EXPANDS TO OTHER CONFLICT REGIONS AROUND THE WORLD THIS WILL BE A GREAT BLUEPRINT, AND SHOW HOW SPORT IS A TOOL THAT CAN CHANGE THE FUTURE OF A CHILD.

BY INTRODUCING BASKETBALL TO CHILDREN IN CONFLICT AREAS, A HEALING PROCESS CAN BEGIN THAT ALLOWS HEALTHY SOCIAL INTEGRATION.

What impact has your innovation had to date/or what is your intended impact? Exactly who are the beneficiaries?

TO DATE WE HAVE COMPLETED PHASE ONE AND INTRODUCED THE SPORT TO THE 20 CHILDREN AT CHINAR. PRIOR TO THE CLINIC IN JUNE OF 2007, WE WORKED VERY HARD TO SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND RECEIVED POSITIVE ATTENTION IN THE NATIONAL PRESS. IN ADDITION, WE WORKED WITH A LOCAL SCHOOL, THE BURNHALL SCHOOL, TO CONDUCT THE CLINIC, AND FOR PART OF THE PROGRAM, INCORPORATED THE CHILDREN OF THE SCHOOL AS WELL AS CHILDREN FROM ANOTHER LOCAL ORPHANAGE. CHINAR KIDS HAD A TREMENDOUS TIME BOTH PLAYING AND INTERACTING WITH A WHOLE NEW GROUP OF CHILDREN, MANY OF WHOM WERE FROM MORE PRIVILEGED BACKGROUNDS. THE LOCAL PRESS TOOK NOTICE OF THIS UNIQUE CONGREGATION. THE ORPHANED CHILDREN GOT AN OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN A SPORT THEY HAD ONLY SEEN ON TV AND LEARN HOW TO BE A TEAM PLAYER. THE MORE PRIVILEGED KIDS WERE INTRODUCED TO A WHOLE NEW SEGMENT OF SOCIETY.THE LOCAL COMMUNITY SAW SPORT DRIVE COLLABORATION.

How many people have you served directly?

SO FAR, REFERRING TO THE DESCRIPTION ABOVE WE DIRECTLY SERVED ABOUT 50 KIDS.WITH THE PRESS WE RECEIVED, WE ALSO SERVED THE LARGER KASHMIR REGION AND INDIA AS WELL. THE PROGRAM BEGAN IN JUNE 2007, WHEN JDBASKETBALL TRAVELED TO WORK WITH THE 20 CHINAR YOUTH AND 2 HOUSE MOTHERS IN SRINAGAR, KASHMIR. IT HAS BEEN NOTED THAT THE PROGRAM HAS MADE A SIGNIFICANT IMPRESSION ON THE CHINAR YOUTH AND HAS AIDED IN THEIR PSYCHOSOCIAL REHABILITATION. IT IS IMPORTANT NOT ONLY THAT THE CHILDREN BE TAUGHT SKILLS FOR THEIR PSYCHOSOCIAL REHABILITATION, BUT ALSO THAT THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE BEGINS TO SEE THE PROBLEM BEING ADDRESSED IN A NEW AND CREATIVE WAY THAT ALLOWS THEM TO BE PART OF THE PROCESS BY SUPPORTING THE PROGRAM FINANCIALLY, BY SENDING THEIR CHILDREN TO THE CLINICS OR SIMPLY BY RECOGNIZING THAT THIS PROBLEM EXISTS.

How many people have you served indirectly?

THROUGH TELEVISION AND NEWSPRINT MEDIA INDIRECTLY WE HAVE SERVED TENS OF THOUSANDS BY CREATING AWARENESS OF ORPHANS IN KASHMIR AND THE CHINAR PROGRAM.

A KEY COMPONENT OF OUR SUCCESS OF PSYCHOSOCIAL REHABILITATION OF THE CHILDREN WILL BE BASED ON REGULAR PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS.IN THE PAST WE HAVE WORKED BOTH WITH LOCAL PROFESSIONALS AS WELL AS DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS, BOTH OF WHICH HAVE BEEN CRITICAL IN HELPING US WITH THE HEALTHY SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE CHILDREN.EVERY CHILD WILL HAVE A TAILORED SET OF GOALS.IN ADDITION WE WILL CONDUCT A SEMINAR PROGRAM TO REINFORCE THE KEY LESSONS LEARNED AND HOW TO INCORPORATE THEM INTO DAILY LIFE.

What are the main barriers to creating or achieving your impact?

IT IS MONEY. THE PROCESS OF IMPLEMENTATION IS NOT DIFFICULT. JD BASKETBALL HAS BEN DOING THIS FOR YEARS ALL AROUND THE WORLD ON A SMALL AND LARGE SCALE BASIS. BUT TO TRULY INSTITUTIONALIZE THE PROGRAM REQUIRES CAPITAL. THANKFULLY IT IS A REASONABLE SUM TO MAKE IT WORK AND IS SCALABLE.

How is your initiative financed (or how do you expect your initiative will be financed)?

THIS INITIATIVE WILL REQUIRE APPROXIMATELY $50,OOO FOR PHASE II: $25,000 FOR PERSONNEL, $5,000 FOR MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT, $5,000 FOR TRAINING, $5,000 FOR TRAVEL, $5,000 FOR EVALUATION, $2,000 FOR ADMINISTRATIVE COSTS. PHASE I WAS FINANCED BY PRIVATE DONORS. WE HOPE TO FIND LIKE-MINDED ORGANIZATIONS TO PROVIDE GRANTS TO FUND THE REMAINDER OF THE PROGRAM.

CHINAR IS A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION WITH FULL FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE AVAILABLE IN OUR ANNUAL REPORT (WWW.CHINAR.ORG). IN 2006 WE GENERATED $44,000 OF REVENUES, $26,000 OF WHICH WERE PROGRAM DONATIONS AND $18,000 WERE EARTHQUAKE RELIEF DONATIONS. OUR PROGRAM OPERATING EXPENSES WERE APPROXIMATELY $22,000.FOR 2008 WE ESTIMATE A BUDGET OF APPROXIMATELY $30,000.CHINAR IS AN ALL-VOLUNTEER NGO WITH MINIMAL OVERHEAD.

What is the potential demand for your innovation?

THE INNOVATION IS SCALABLE.AND WE ARE PARTNERING WITH JD WALSH BASKETBALL SCHOOL, A WELL-ESTABLISHED ROAMING BASKETBALL PROGRAM, WITH THE MISSION OF HIGHLIGHTING RELEVANT SOCIAL CAUSES GLOBALLY.WE THINK WE CAN TAKE THIS PROGRAM GLOBALLY AS CHINAR EXPANDS ITS BRANCHES TO OTHER WAR-TORN AREAS.

What are the main barriers to financial sustainability?

OUR PROGRAM WOULD WORK BEST IF WE HAD THE MONEY ALL AT ONCE SO WE COULD PLAN THE ENTIRE PROJECT AND KEEP THE MOMENTUM OF THE PROGRAM. IF THE TIMING OF EACH PHASE OF THE PROGRAM IS BROKEN UP IT COULD DETRACT FORM THE IMPACT AND THE MOMENTUM WE ALREADY HAVE.

What is the origin of this innovation? Tell us your story.

CHINAR WAS FOUNDED ON THE PREMISE OF PSYCHOSOCIAL REAHABILITATION OF ORPHANED CHILDREN IN CONFLICT AREAS. FROM THE BEGINNING WE SOUGHT TO CREATE A NURTURING HOME ENVIRONMENT WHERE THE HOUSEHOLD IS HEADED BY MOTHER FIGURES. WE SOUGHT TO ENSURE THESE KIDS WERE RAISED AS IF THEY WERE OUR OWN. BEING SO SENSITIVE TO THE NEEDS OF THESE KIDS, WE HAVE MADE SURE THAT THEY RECEIVE THE BEST HOME LIFE AND EDUCATION. THROUGH PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUTION WE SAW HOW TRAUMATIC AN ENVIRONMENT THESE KIDS HAD BEEN EXPOSED TO AND SOUGHT TO TRY TO ADDRES THE NOT-SO-VISIBLE DAMAGE. WE BECAME AWARE OF THE JD WALSH BASKETBALL SCHOOL NEARLY TWO YEARS AGO AND WERE VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE ORGANIZATION'S SOCIAL MISSION AND ABILITY TO MANAGE LARGE SCALE BASKETBALL PROGRAMS ALL OVER THE WORLD IN DOZENS OF DIFFERENT LANGUAGES. WE FELT THAT A SIMILAR PROGRAM AT CHINAR WOULD BOTH HELP THE CHILDREN IN THIER MENTAL HEALTH DEVELOPMENT AND BE A GREAT TOOL IN BRINGING AWARENESS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY, AND THE NATION AT LARGE. WE MET FOR THREE MONTHS TO DISCUSS THE DETAILS OF THE PROGRAM AND CAME UP WITH A MULTI-PHASED THREE YEAR PLAN THAT WE BEGAN LAST SUMMER IN KASHMIR,INDIA WITH A THREE DAY SKILLS TRAINING CLINIC.THE CHILDREN SHOWED GREAT EXCITEMENT AND FOUND THE NEW SPORT THRILLING.THEY WERE ALSO GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO INTERACT WITH OTHER CHILDREN IN THE COMMUNITY WHICH WAS A HEARTENING EXPERIENCE FOR THEM. MOST IMPORTANTLY,THEY ARE QUITE EXCITED TO GET BACK IN THE GAME!

CHILD NURTURE AND RELIEF (CHINAR) IS AN INDDEPENDANT, NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION WORKING FOR THE PSYCHOSOCIAL REHABILITATION OF ORPHANED AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN IN CONFLICT AREAS IRRESPECTIVE OF RACE, RELIGION, CULTURE OR GENDER. ONE OF THE BIGGEST CASUALTIES OF WAR IS THE FUTURE OF ITS YOUNGEST VICTOMS. THEY GROW UP IN THE SHADOW OF GRUESOME VIOLENCE AND IMMENSE SOCIAL CHANGE OFTEN WITHOUT FAMILIAL PROTECTION AND GUIDANCE. THESE CHILDREN BECOME EASY RECRUITS FOR ALL SORTS OF VIOLENT CAUSES. CHINAR SEEKS TO END THAT CYCLE.
