What is the primary problem your venture is trying to address and how are you addressing it (or planning to address it)?
In Guatemala trash is left in public spaces. Trash contaminates the streets, the water supply and contaminates the atmosphere. Since early child, I have lived in the city and county of San Martín, where garbage piles up after market days. In the streets and rivers you can find dead animals, discarded diapers, plastic bags, animal bones, and other trash. This contamination harms public health and contributes to the spread of dengue, dysentery, and eye and skin disease.
Additionally, piles of rotting trash are foul smelling and present an unsightly image of the city to both residents and visitors.
I plan to improve the community through a municipal clean-up initiative, in which I and other youth leaders of San Martín will begin to provide training through educational centers, to children, youth, parents and the leaders of other communities within the county. Training sessions will focus on the health and environmental risks posed by exposed trash, and sustainable trash management, through sorting and recycling. After the training phase is complete, we will begin the installation of 100 trash barrels in the county seat. With the help of this prize, we will be able to expand our efforts to other communities in the county.
