Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

The Mission Recycling Committee (MRC) adds to the efforts of improving the environment by advocating recycling. The focus is to establish a long lasting recycling program, to encourage recycling, and to spread recycling awareness to every student at the school. At Mission High, there is a requirement of 40 hours of community service in order to graduate. Many students push this requirement off until their senior year, risking stress and possibly their graduation. I hope to get students to complete their community service hours early on by encouraging younger students to volunteer with MRC and to encourage long-lasting civic participation.

Venture Description:

The Mission Recycling Committee (MRC) adds to the efforts of improving the environment by advocating recycling. The focus is to establish a long lasting recycling program, to encourage recycling, and to spread recycling awareness to every student at the school. At Mission High, there is a requirement of 40 hours of community service in order to graduate. Many students push this requirement off until their senior year, risking stress and possibly their graduation. I hope to get students to complete their community service hours early on by encouraging younger students to volunteer with MRC and to encourage long-lasting civic participation.

Venture Origin:

Recycling is important to me because my parents stressed the importance of recycling and individual responisblity. I grew up feeling that I, as an individual, have the capability to impact society and the community in any way I want. I want to impact the community in a positive way by advocating efforts to recycle.

Innovation

This venture is creative because there was no, in the history of Mission High School, advocacy for the environment in which the whole school directly plays a part in. This venture includes every single student in the effort to better the environment. The recycling effort is reinforced at Mission. The Mission Recycling Committee is completely youth led, consisting of a total of 10 founders.

Impact
Impact:

Impact: The school community benefits directly because a group of dedicated students are willing to spread their passion for recycling. Through seminars, environmental field trips, assemblies, and more, MRC members strive to encourage others to recycle and make recycling a habit. The 850+ students and adults at Mission High School would feel that they are a part in the effort to decrease the uprising landfill rate.

Engagement with the community: I engage the students of Mission in our efforts. A total of 10 youths founded the MRC. On Monday and Thursday, the after school group collects the bags that teachers put out by the end of the day. The more volunteers there are, the quicker the collection process. Volunteers are provided with gloves to keep sanitary. They would sort of paper, bottle, and recyclables collected in each classroom.

Impact and engagement progress since launch: Since the launch of the program, teachers have given a positive response. They loved the fact that a group of students is taking an issue into their own hands. We have had presentations already and have a bin in 15 classrooms. We have about 30 more bins ready to hand out to other classrooms. During the Wednesday meetings, we got a lot done and organized the founders into different positions.

Impact and engagement strategy: With founders and volunteers, we work together to make sure everything runs smoothly. Every Wednesday, for one hour, the leadership team meets to reflect our progress and plan action steps for the following week. We are hoping to connect MRC members to volunteer at local parks and do community service aside from MRC. We will also expand our program to other schools in San Francisco in the future.

Awards: none.

Budge:t

Amount of Youth Venture seed grant: 590

Money raised: I have brought in $9800 from a grant that I applied for, from Youth Funding Youth Ideas. I want this project as big as possible and as influential to the community as possible.

Creative ways of raising resources: I am on the lookout for other possible resources for us to take advantage of. I am in great relationship with the local government based environmental organization. I write thank you letters to the presenters and guests that come to the school, and I also give them an MRC T-shirt as a thank you.

Strategy:

Expansion plan for next 6 months: Right now, I am looking to purchase recycling bins with lids in the hallways so that students can recycle in the hallways as well. I also want to start to collect electronics, ink catridges, and batteries soon. MRC will be a model for other schools.

Plans for sustaining the project: The Venture is sustainable because there is a hard working group of individuals to carry out the project. This will continue even after the founders graduate. By collecting recyclables and sorting them out, we take the bottles and redeem them as a source of income for MRC.

Vision for three years from now: Three years from now, the model that MRC creates now will be implemented in other local schools as well. In three years, the city of San Francisco will be one of the top cities in USA to advocate for the environment.

Project impact:

The impact that the Mission Recycling committee has had on the school community has been huge. Right now, there are bins and recycling containers for students to recycle. The problem of not having any type of containers to place their recycables is no longer a problem. People easily have access to throw away their recyclables.

Sustainability
Youth Venture movement - what it means and how you can contribute:

It means a lot to me to be a part of the Youth Venture movement. It means that I am taking advantage of me as an individual, and taking the skills that I learned throughout life to help others. I am a changemaker and I have the power to make a difference. I have support from my parents, teachers, friends, and most importantly, Youth Venture. Youth Venture was the stepping stone for my success. The team can contribute further in promoting the Youth Venture movement by including as many volunteers from Mission as possible.
