SeniorLink seeks to familiarize nursing home residents with the computer. Some residents, who may feel lonely and/or under stimulated, need to be engaged in something new! After promoting SeniorLink with advertisements in the newspaper, and posters in local businesses, SeniorLink will collect computers from the community, have them refurbished in collaboration with High Tech Teens, and will distribute them out to senior citizen communities in Bucks County. We will teach the residents how to type letters, make cards, play games, and even use the internet for email and surfing the web.

Venture Description:

SeniorLink seeks to familiarize nursing home residents with the computer. Some residents, who may feel lonely and/or under stimulated, need to be engaged in something new! After promoting SeniorLink with advertisements in the newspaper, and posters in local businesses, SeniorLink will collect computers from the community, have them refurbished in collaboration with High Tech Teens, and will distribute them out to senior citizen communities in Bucks County. We will teach the residents how to type letters, make cards, play games, and even use the internet for email and surfing the web.

Venture Origin:

My grandfather passed away at Langhorne Gardens unexpectedly while we were on vacation. It hurt me to discover that he passed away alone, without love by his side. I made it my commitment to make sure no resident ever felt alone and without anything to do. I figured that introducing the computer to them, could serve a variety of purposes for them.

Innovation

We solve a problem many residents face- understimulation. After promoting SeniorLink, we will collect computer/software donations from the community, and will host fundraising events to raise money for any equipment we might need. Computers are a more flexiblie and invigorating way for residents to keep connected to the community, something no other organization has tried in Bucks County.

Impact
Impact:

Impact: Currently, we have four computers set up at Langhorne Gardens, another six being refurbished, and even more being donated by local businesses. The four residents at Langhorne Gardens love the computer and 'practice' very often. Many nursing homes have contacted us and have requested that we initiate SeniorLink in their senior citizen communities. SeniorLink has just started, and we are way ahead of schedule .

Engagement with the community: Our venture reaches out to anyone in the community. So far, we have received donations from several people/businesses and counting. Many friends have requested joining SeniorLink, and we plan to expand since we would like to start SeniorLink in many nursing homes. We plan to host fundraising events that engage the entire community, such as a movie night we are planning.

Impact and engagement progress since launch: We have promoted SeniorLink effectivley and have over ten computers donated (we aimed for four). We have built strong connections with businesses/nursing homes as we seek to initiate SeniorLink in new senior communities in the coming weeks. The residents enjoy learning about the computer and always request that we come sooner than our meeting time, showing their enjoyment and commitment to learn.

Impact and engagement strategy: We modify our 'curriculum' to teach the residents based on feedback we plan to get back after we conduct our survey. This will help us tailor our program to the residents needs. We plan on expanding SeniorLink to the many nursing homes in our area. We already have computers to distribute, and nursing homes that want them. We are looking to recruit more volunteers to make this expansion smoothly.

Awards:

Budge:t

Amount of Youth Venture seed grant: $570

Money raised: We have just started our venture, but have already received $150 dollars from donations. We are planning to host a movie night soon, which we expect to raise over $50 dollars in profit.

Creative ways of raising resources: We have contacted some banks to see what it would take to hold a SeniorLink account. Many of them require a minimum amount of money to remain in the account. We are looking for find a bank that keeps that requirement low, and that will not be of any cost for us. First National Bank shows promise!

Strategy:

Expansion plan for next 6 months: A nursing home in Yardley is starting an Internet Cafe. We will aid them in starting the cafe for residents in the next few weeks. We are receiving many computers from businesses and will set them up in other nursing homes as the computers are ready.

Plans for sustaining the project: We plan to hold creative fundraising events at least four times in a year to raise enough funds to sustain our needs. Children Cultural Center connects any youth volunteers to SeniorLink, and the three of us attend different schools, so we have many friends who are interested in helping us.

Vision for three years from now: SeniorLink will be prevalent in every nursing home that shows interest in bringing computers to their residents. A network of volunteers will meet with residents in a nursing home that is convenient for them. The residents will be able to keep up to date with the community and the world via the computer. The community will be so well aware of SeniorLink, they will always help any way they can.

Project impact:

Residents connection with the computer will keep their minds active and alert. Often residents' minds deteriorate due to lack of interaction. They lose the desire to do anything else in life. Reaching out and teaching them new things, such as using the computer, jump-starts the passion within, as well as instills in them a sense of confidence and accomplishment which they may have forgotten. We teach the residents how to play games on the computer for starters, and then teach them how to surf the web for news, videos, and even email! This will enable an easier, more convenient and flexible way of keeping in touch. We teach them the basics of the computer, including how to type. They will be able to type up letters for families, or even create holiday cards for the many charity events that we can host. Why not just use the online tutorials already established? These tutorials are full of computer-based jargon difficult to understand. SeniorLink will be more hands on; we learn things from the community and we should give back. Many businesses have thanked us for taking their old computers. As surprising as it sounds, old computers often sit in garages and basements for the longest time, only accumulating dust. One man's junk is another man's treasure. We make use of those computers to teach the residents. We intend to spread SeniorLink throughout the nursing homes in Bucks County as we recruit new members. This Venture benefits the often-overlooked residents by integrating them within society. SeniorLink will also build a stronger connection between us kids and the elderly. The fundraising activities that will be organized with help bring the community together for a valuable purpose.

Sustainability
Youth Venture movement - what it means and how you can contribute:

Being a part of the Youth Venture movement gives us the confidence we need to succeed. Many of kids just like us have started similar ventures, and we have read about them changing not only the few people they helped, but entire communities. Being a part of such a prestigious movement is very rewarding. It provides for a network; it connects all of the kids in something we all enjoy doing: giving back to the community. I think that we can contribute a lot im promoting the Youth Venture movement as we have big dreams. I believe that these dreams are within our reach, and will just take us time and commitment. We can always make room for time, and as for me, I know in my heart that there will always be a sense of determination, desire, and discipline. We hope we too can be as successful as some older ventures, and hopefully we can serve as a model for others to look up at and say, "I hope my venture is as effective as theirs!"
