In terms of what SBS would do on a regular basis, we would serve as an intermediary between a beneficiary and a potential philanthropic entity by producing integrated sports programs that achieve our clients respective needs. SBS's programs allow the beneficiary to establish awareness on a grassroots level, as well as fundraising opportunities on the corporate level. Furthermore, our programs create bespoke return on investments for the philanthropic entity that can rebrand, reposition, or enhance their respective market recognition.

Venture Description:

In terms of what SBS would do on a regular basis, we would serve as an intermediary between a beneficiary and a potential philanthropic entity by producing integrated sports programs that achieve our clients respective needs. SBS's programs allow the beneficiary to establish awareness on a grassroots level, as well as fundraising opportunities on the corporate level. Furthermore, our programs create bespoke return on investments for the philanthropic entity that can rebrand, reposition, or enhance their respective market recognition.

Venture Origin:

Two years ago, I started to organize a basketball clinic for a local charity, The Catholic Big Sisters Big Brothers organization. The goal was to use basketball skills learned on the court in order to teach the youth about life off of it, such as the important of an education, work ethic and collaboration. I started off with 4 kids.

Innovation

SBS is innovative in the sense that it works as an intermediary by bridging the gap between beneficiaries and philantrhopic entities. We are creating a platform for each side to achieve their respective needs such as fundraising, awareness, publicity, brand image, ect. It is worth noting that no organization is acting as an intermediary and producing sports programs to benefit the end-users.

Impact
Impact:

Impact: I think the impact can be highlighted from the small basketball clinics I started to produce two years ago. I started off with four children participating. The next year I had 20. This year, we are expecting thousands of dollars to be raised for Right To Play, our first client. The progression has been great, and it exemplifies the power sports can have in terms of serving as a platform for fundraising, awareness, education and participation.

Engagement with the community: We have started a student club at New York University. This enables us to keep the youth involvement going on a grassroots level. After I graduate, I can focus my energies on the company level, yet having the support of the youth on a collegiate level is essential. Having an outlet for them to continue this initiative is also very important, something that this funding can help with.

Impact and engagement progress since launch: The participation numbers of our programs has increased substantially. I started off with 4 children participating only two years ago, and our current programs now have Olympic athletes involved with the potential to raise $20,000 for beneficiaries.

Impact and engagement strategy: The markets of interest for SBS are those that want to rebrand, reposition or enhance their respective recognition in fundraising efforts, corporate partnerships, increased youth involvement, brand recognition, promotional platforms, or media attention. Any beneficiary can utilize sports programs in order enhance their respective goals, thus making our primary market quite extensive.

Awards: SBS was awarded the 2005 & 2006 Presidents Service Award.

Budge:t

Amount of Youth Venture seed grant: 0

Money raised: $2,500 from NYU Student Council's that have helped us fund some programs.

Creative ways of raising resources: Sponsorship opporunties for our events are where we create in-kind programs in order to cut expenses and create value. Examples include venues, sports equipment and t-shirts.

Strategy:

Expansion plan for next 6 months: To grow out of a student club, and into a company.

Plans for sustaining the project: Let's use the Right To Play Challenge event, our upcoming program, for example. It will be used throughout various colleges/universities in order to create fundraising opportunities to the same effect as Relay For Life for American Cancer Society. This way, it could be an annual and sustainable.

Vision for three years from now: My vision is to expand in such a way to show the versatility of our service. Working with beneficiaries, philanthropic entities as well as sports properties by activating sponsorships on a grassroots level will be a indication of serving the community on three different levels.

Project impact:

George Will once said, ?sports serve society by providing vivid examples of excellence?. With that said, the mission of SBS is to use sports as a platform to give back to the community and promote philanthropic initiatives. All over the world, there are inequalities and disparities, but sports have the ability to level the playing field; they have the ability to break down social barriers. Sports, in its purest form, have the capability to not only promote equality and collaboration but also alleviate communal and societal problems. SBS will utilize the power of sports in order to benefit the community as well as mitigate unfair educational gaps by producing sports programs that can range from charitable events to clinics, seminars, and speaking arrangements. The goal is to benefit the community by taking lessons learned on the court in order to teach those who are in need about life off of it, such as the importance of education, work ethic, and collaboration.

Sustainability
Youth Venture movement - what it means and how you can contribute:

It's an honor. To be picked for a round of interviews at NYU's Youth Venture was so exciting because it wasn't competition when viewing other ventures. It was more of "wow, that's great, let's try to work together in some way". Most people assume that youth is associated with not being able to do great things. To that, I say Howard Schultz, Warren Buffett and Steve Jobs, business leaders who didnt let their youth interfere with their passion. Being young and having a passion to serve the interest of the public is something very special to me. I think my team can contribute to this by using sports as an entry point to serve the community. Furthermore, the only way to increase the amount of philanthropic efforts is to create a platform for them to recieve benefits. Not many people are willing to just write a check and give it to a beneficiary. If we can create a platform to recieve benefits such as brand awareness and PR, as well as use sports as the mechanism, we could increase the amount of funds that could go to a beneficiary. This is about using business principles in order to increase philanthropic initiatives.
