About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

During this unfavorable circumstance of economic recession, elderly people and people with disabilities in Greece risk further degradation of living standards and social isolation. This target group is estimated at more than 10% of the total population, over a million. These people can be notably creative composing special artworks or handicrafts. However their capability to publish and place their works on the market is limited as well.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

"Ars Gratia Hominem" aims to become a non profit organisation encouraging artists with disabilities and elderly artists to present and promote their artwork to the public. This aim will be implemented via an online store which will purchase or auction domestically and abroad art created exclusively by these two socially vulnerable groups. Representatives will contact individual artists or competent institutions and create an interactive relationship. Art products will be made available through "Ars Gratia Hominem" webpage. Advertising campaigns will be organised as well as social events including competitions, exhibitions and presentations. In this context, special artists will boost their artistic creativity and become socially active.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Kostas, 30, has been restricted to a wheelchair since a car accident at the age of 18. By adapting to his new mobility limitations he spent a lot of his time creating handicrafts in his garage which he had turned to a small laboratory. His artwork was really worthy! Although he wished to be a professionnal artist, there was no social structure to support and promote his work, so only friends and relatives knew about his talents. One day his friend encouraged him to participate in "A.G.H.", a different project aiming to promote artwork created by special artists. After communicating with the representative he finally found a recourse to his work and was happy to begin selling his handicrafts as decoration to new office spaces in Athens.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

In Greece people with special needs and elderly people are estimated more than a million. Over the last years we have found out electronic means and software to improve and boost communication, networking and interaction between members of a society with minimum cost. This is the time to use technology in favor of people less advantaged. "Ars Gratia Hominem" is a conception for technology to contribute to improving occupational, activational and socializing potential for people with corporal or mental weaknesses.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

"Ars Gratia Hominem" will be able to host many artworks from special artists within its electronic platform, which will be available to the broad public. Events, exhibitions and competition will be organised, where artists and public will interact and socialise in the context of art and culture. Artists will finally benefit financially as well as socially by this innovative project.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

This is about a non-profit organisation created by socially sensitive people who are going to set up an e-shop and get in contact with competent institutions and individuals to create the "A.G.H." network. The project's sustainability will be ensured as the organisation will gain a small percentage on each transaction conducted via the webpage. Donations and sponsorships will finance events and competitions. Voluntary work will assist logistics.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

It is common in Greece for institutions occupying people with special needs to merchandise handicrafts in social events. Also, Centers for Elderly Citizens (K.A.P.I.) constantly organise art groups and events. All of these efforts have a limited range at the moment. "Ars Gratia Hominem" is about an organisation to unify such ventures and address them to the broad public.
