About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

In Greece certain groups of patients (chronic/non), mostly elders, do not receive the appropriate out-of-hospital care (medical & social) they need and the cost for attending to these groups in hospitals, is too high for the state. This creates a huge gap between the state & the citizens and has serious negative effects on social consistency. At the same time, unemployment, mostly among the younger age groups, causes various significant problems.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Certain groups of patients (chronic or non) can be provided with health care and social support at home. In this way they have less hospital visits and a better management of their everyday life. For the patient this means among others less trouble for him and his family, reinstatement of his social life, less expenses and a better monitoring of his condition. For the state it means reduction of the operational costs and better case management in the hospitals, fewer expenses for the insurance funds, social consistency and managing unemployment concerning the groups of professions related to the provision of care to all these patients.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

A lung disease patient is 16h/24h supported by oxygen concentrator and medicines, thus not being able to move outside the house. His social life is affected since he feels bound and dependent on his people, his health is easily affected e.g. by weather and he has to be transferred to the hospital several times in a year. His family is also affected since it is them who are mostly responsible for his care. Galinos project provides medical & supporting personnel that take care of the patient thus reducing the hospital visits only to the absolute necessary, and to guarantee a better quality of life for everyone. The program for each patient’s care is personalized and the support teams see that all of the patient’s needs are fully covered.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Patients with chronic diseases (Lung diseases, Diabetes, Alzheimer, Parkinson), Cancer, Disabled people, Elders and others and their families can have medical care at their home and supplementary psychological and social support. In 2009 for example 18.203 patients with chronic lung diseases and 16.206 patients with Diabetes, mostly between 50-90 years of age were hospitalized in Greece (source EL.STAT.). The Cooperative Social Enterprise (C.S.E.) «Galinos» by Galinos project, being able to provide a number of services that keeps chronic patient’s health condition steady, helps in the recovery of the patient after leaving the hospital, improves his quality of life, supports his family and house functionality, creates work opportunities, informs the local community about the contribution of Social Economy in Greece and is above all an innovation for Greek society.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The project will at first apply for the city of Kavala and our goal is to expand it for the rest of the country. The low operational costs of the project allow us to better manage our available sources and to prolong the project’s operation. Our target is to provide social work to the concerning communities. Since patients with chronic diseases increase every year in Greece, we believe that the users of Galinos project will also increase every year along with their confidence in the C.S.E. GALINOS concerning their health and everyday life.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Since our services are free of charge, all revenue will come from retail trading of products bought by our users, in order to support & better their lives. We wish to expand our product range in order to cover as many needs as possible. Τhis revenue will fund our operational costs and the growth of the enterprise. It is of great importance for our services to become known in the community so as to have a yearly increase of our potential users.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

In Greece similar services are totally absent in the public sector and are offered only in the private sector. However this is the case only in the big cities of Athens and Thessaloniki, and the cost is very high while the client has to pay in full. At the same time social entrepreneurship is very new in Greece and there is no similar project developed by another C.S.E. (Our project is therefore unique).

Founding Story

After studying the law 4019/2011, we found out that within the limits of social economy, we had the chance to create a structure that would exist in-between the social and private sector. The health care system in Greece has always had serious problems and great gaps. So, having the know-how and expertise, to provide some much needed health care and social services, we decided to create the C.S.E. “Galinos” in 2012. The strategy plan which is being followed, has been approved by the managing committee and our goal is for all our projects to be self-funded.

The C.S.E. «Galinos»is consisted of experienced, individual teams of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, social workers and administrative personnel. The managing board, which is consisted of 2 doctors, 2 managers and a pharmacist, coordinates them all. The level of involvement of each team is based upon the needs of each project and whether it is full time or part time. The educational level of each team varies (from university to high school).
