Old age is not a disease
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

The growing percentage of elderly people creates new demand for provision of long-term care. Age and dependence related conditions (pathological ageing) may require less care in the purely medical sense of the term, but require more care in the social sense, which means relatively lower cost but for a longer period of time. Therefore, the demand for formal long-term care and the period of provision increases.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

In all modern societies, care services for older people have changed their structure in recent years. The range of services has been expanded and supplemented with open care and home care services. There is a continuing shift away from hospital and institutional care. Informal care that is provided by the family and the community, due to the increasing instability of household income and the smaller family size, is weakening and obstructs the stay of elderly people in the family environment. Following the above mentioned approach, we created the S.C.E.of Social Care titled ESTIADES, supporting the effort for easy access to professional alternative services, taking into consideration the wish of the persons to preserve their independence.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The idea of our involvement in this activity was born from both our own families as well as the families of our friends and neighbors. The elderly, healthy or not, who live alone or with their companions, just need someone to care. For that reason we provide: a) Social Support b) Nursing Care and c) Household Support services. Most of the beneficiaries who have already trusted us, greeted us with enthusiasm as we send Social Workers, Nurses and Family Carers, to visit them every week. The Social Workers combat their depression. The Nurses, support them in maintaining their health and Family Carers help them in their daily chores. In urban areas, the need is huge as the isolation is hidden.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

In 2009 by creating an informal network of volunteers we provided home care services and by 2012 we had successfully supported 62 families, acting more as family members rather than social carers. By Law 4029/2011 we had the opportunity to work in a more organized basis and therefore to create the Social Cooperative Enterprise of Social Care "ESTIADES", participating actively in combat poverty and enhance social justice and cohesion in Greece.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

By obtaining certification we shall contribute to the enhanced quality services for the elderly. Moreover, our professionals will seek on their own initiative the people who need help and we shall set up interdisciplinary social care mobile units in order to expand our activities to more municipalities. Furthermore, we shall establish the "escort" for disabled and the "interpreter" for deaf that will significantly enhance their autonomy and active participation in society. Finally, we will exercise actions for early detection for children that prevent exclusion and facilitate their families.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

All our services are free of charge. All revenues will come from beneficiaries' insurance funds. Our aim is to expand our services in wider population and by the present revenue will be funded the growth of our enterprise. It is of great importance for us, to provide a wider range of services for more people, focusing at their needs. The expand of our services will also increase employment for professionals.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Although there is a clear need to pursue a coherent social inclusion for all in the future, the efforts for social entrepreneurship which is very new in Greece, are already delivering results. The continuing transformation of social care that is conveyed by the new technology makes it possible to respond to social inclusion needs, while presenting opportunities for economic growth. Bridging digital divides and accessibility gaps, translates into new jobs and services.
Team

Founding Story

ESTIADES is a social cooperative enterprise, created in order to keep unquenchable the sacred flame of the family, such as the Vestales did in ancient Rome. As volunteers, till 2012, we successfully supported 62 families, by providing home care, acting more as family members rather than as social carers. By the Law 4029/2011 we had the opportunity to work in a more organized basis and therefore to create this enterprise with the distinctive title ESTIADES and registration number Γ00280. Our aim is the provision of social services in specific population groups such as the elderly, infants, children, people with disabilities and people with chronic diseases.

Team

The C.S.E. «ESTIADES» is consisted of experienced, individual teams of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, social workers and administrative personnel. Besides the academic qualifications of the Board of Directors, they are all dedicated to solidarity actions.
