3D me is an innovative mobile education center – a bus with state of the art 3D video and audio equipment and Audience Response System, that provides highly effective training to school kids, company employees and public servants.
In its first stage - 3D Ecobus, the training is in the field of recycling, environmental protection and sustainable development.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

3Dme addresses through effective education and training major social problems like sustainable development, obesity, lack of basic financial knowledge, natural disasters safety rules, etc. In its first stage - 3D Ecobus, the focus is on recycling: according to Eurostat in 2011 Bulgaria recovers only 6% of its waste. The rest goes to landfills. In Germany, for example, only 1% is thrown away and 99% recovered. According to data from a nationally representative surveys done by GfK, the main reasons for the Bulgarian households not to collect their waste separately are lack of information, distrust in the process of transportation and separation as well as simple indifference.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Create cognitive, attitudinal and behavioral change. In the 3D Ecobus stage this is -Increase the understanding of separate waste collection and the benefits for society and the environment. -Increase public trust by creating positive attitude and emotional bond with this concept. -Create stable habits for separate waste collection among specific target groups. We selected primary school kids as main target because they are: -grown enough to comprehend the concept and still lack firm habits so no correction of negative habits is needed; -easy to reach through the centralized educational system; -capable of strong influence over their parents’ behavior. We also focused on state and municipal representatives and company employees.
Impact: How does it Work

To effectively promote change, in the first stage of the project – 3D Ecobus, we created the universal mobile educational center – a bus with 50 seats, entirely branded and equipped with state of the art 3D video and audio systems, as well as Audience Response System (ARS). A special educational package was developed by experts in the field – short lectures, 3D film for kids, 2D film for the general public and a number of ARS-based quizzes for evaluation of the entire process. The bus goes around the country to schools and offices where trainings are held. A website to continue the education process on-line was created.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The next stages of the 3Dme project are build upon the experience gathered and incorporate the philosophy and major principals of 3DEcoubus: 1.Technological, workplace and social innovation 2.Collaborative model for effective change, involving private companies, NGOs, central and local government institutions, international organizations and media. 3.Addressing social exclusion issues by providing high-quality education to any kind of minority anywhere. 4. High efficiency – impactful educational content delivered to a big number of trainees through centralized school and company structuresand 5. Measurability. Educational packages in such problematic fields like healthy nutrition, finance and earthquake safety rules are developed. Our immediate plans include Bulgaria and the Balkan region. The concept can be effectively applied anywhere and in any field and that is the beauty of it.
Sustainability

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

The problems we address and in particular the separate waste collection, environmental protection and sustainability public awareness in the 3D Ecobus stage, are being addressed in many ways by any kind of organizations. However, our approach is unique on a global scale. There are vehicles used for education, 3D visualization and ARS-based products too. The proper mix of them, combined with securing the widest possible support in the private and public sector has proven to be an effective instrument of change, that could not be found anywhere.

Team

There are three teams involved: 1. Content creation - Education experts (outsourced) - Creative Director, Art Director, Designers - Film shooting crew (outsourced) 2. Delievery - Trainers - Logistical support - Technical support - Driver and vehicle support (outsourced) 3. Management and R&D This structure covers the entire operation. In all three teams there is a top company manager direct involvement. As the program grows, teams will grow in quantity. Local teams will be employed with international growth.

Impact

Since March 2011 more than 80 000 kids in 500 schools in 70 municipalities have been trained. The website registrations are 8 000. 4 000 employees of companies like Coca-Cola, Heineken, Carlsberg and governmental and municipal agencies went through the training program. The quizzes done at the end of each training showed a 90% comprehension rate on average. According to a 2010 GfK survey, only 27% of the people in municipalities, serviced by Ecopack, collect separately their waste. In a December 2013 survey this percentage is 57. In 2013 there is a 3% increase from 2012 of the volume of the recycled by Ecopack materials. Through the trainees and the extensive media coverage, the messages of the project reached hundreds of thousands of Bulgarian households and accomplished a change in the attitude and the behavior, the results of which will be shown in decades to come.

Sustainability Plan: Has your project already reached financial sustainability? If not, what is this solutio’s plan to ensure financial sustainability? Do the main partners have enough stake to sustain the solution? If this project requires limited budget, how will other resources be secured to maintain or grow this work?

Yes, for the first stage - 3D Ecobus. For next stages - no. This is a recourse-extensive project. The creation of 3D educational content and delivering it anywhere you can go on wheels has its price. However, we have pushed the price down to EUR 2,5 per person per 40 minutes which is quite acceptable. The financial support will come from: -EU funding schemes, Horizon 2020, for example; -International organizations; -Private companies. Involving volunteers and pro bono contributions is expected too.

Founding Story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the Partners to get started and/or to see the potential for this to succeed.

When my kids saw a 3D movie for a first time I was really struck how impressed they were. When we faced the problem of creating substantial sustainable change in social perceptions and behavior, the solution came really easy – address kids, impress them as much as you can and go to them, rather than wait for them to come to you. The rest is a great team, an open-minded and supportive partner and a broad coalition of individuals and organizations sharing the same values.

About the Co-Creation
Barriers: What main barriers may you have encountered to co-create during the creation and implementation of the project and how did you try to overcome them?

Surprisingly enough, we did not have financial problems – Ecopack Bulgaria funded entirely 3D Ecobus. Both ministries of education and of environment immediately appreciated the idea too.
The problems we encountered were:
1.The educational content – we did not have proper experience so we attracted as a strategic partner a NGO leading in the field of education–Paideia Foundation, which since than is responsible for the didactical quality of the educational products – lectures, films, quizzes and tests.
2.Technical–creating practically a 3D movie theater within a bus is quite a challenge. We did extensive tests of the equipment.
3.HR–we had to redefine the job descriptions of some team members and to put them through trainings to acquire the technical and communication skills and specific knowledge on the educational subject to effectively operate the 3D mobile education center.

Governance: What is the type of the relationship between the partners? (e.g. joint venture, contractual relationship, joint project...)

The relationship among the major partners – DeConi, Ecopack Bulgaria and Paidea Foundation are based on contracts. The interactions are on a weekly and sometimes on a daily basis.

Interaction model: How is the project a transformative partnership? How is the interaction transforming the partnering organizations and their employees/ leadership in terms of creating a new vision, new management practices, new skills and new organizational structures? Please provide for concrete examples

The internal organization of DeConi was changed. The people assigned to it got new, enhanced and rather enriched job descriptions. New employees were hired to. To fit in this new job functionalities, all team members had to acquire new competences. They all went through an extensive training process to improve their communication skill as well as their computer skills and acquire specific technical knowledge so they can handle the 3D mobile education center.
