Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

Prisoners are transformed into entrepreneurs by having them take part in an intensive entrepreneurship training and getting them funding to make them less likely to go back to prison.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

And if we tried a new recipe to fight against it again! We give a chance for inmates to better reintegrate into society.
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

This project wants to fight against the high rate of recidivism in prisons, and the youth unemployment that can drive them to commit crimes. Burkina is better off as a society with flourishing youth where the rate of juvenile delinquency is minimized.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Creating entrepreneurs by putting prisoners through a training program for business creation, leading to follow-up and funding of their project ideas at the end of their detention.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

In Burkina Faso, there are nearly thirty prisons. Despite inmates being set free over the years, we note with regret that the number of prisoners is increasing dramatically. So we thought to innovate, and educate these inmates in another way to make them entrepreneurs. This is a first in our country.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Since 2011, our association has worked to educate prisoners by providing literacy classes in french and working with these inmates until they take school exams. Our regular presence in the Detention Center and Correction of Ouagadougou (MACO) made us aware of the high rates of recidivism. We had to find a way to reduce the rate of crime in the country.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

In order to reach the largest number of inmates and considering the illiteracy rate in our prisons, we will plan training in the national language. We will build partnerships with financial institutions in order to promote the financing of projects ... Finally, training will be provided through the participation of ministries (justice, youth and employment, social action).
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

We will procure strong partnerships with existing structures in place fighting for human rights, youth employment, reducing the rate of juvenile delinquency. We hope that building these networks will allow training and ongoing funding of the program. Example: Ministry of Youth and Employment for training; National Social Security Fund of Fund and support youth initiatives for funding ...

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Several structures are in place in our prisons to provide inmates with a better tomorrow. These structures operate through prayers, moments of sensitization, recreational time, training in trades (carpentry, welding, gardening ...) However, the inmates are alone and left on their own after their detention in prison is over. With no financial support and facing rejection by society, they often prefer to return to prison. We would like to help them build their business (promoting the project idea, writing a business plan, financing, monitoring.)
Team

Founding Story

The School Association for All (AEPT) was born out of the desire to meet the need to achieve education for all in Burkina Faso. I wanted to reach the most needy who are not considered by the existing structures working in the field of education. We therefore began with street children, then women and girls out of school (adults) and after that, these detainees. The idea of undertaking in prisons is born thanks to the time spent with the prisoners, the findings in recidivism and also through the exchanges they share with us.

Team

The association consists of ten members (teachers and students) all determined to promote education for all and to fight against juvenile delinquency. Thus, there are secretaries; a charge to the organization; of the external relations; a treasurer and a small team doing innovation thinking. We all work for the project's success and reflections are divided into teams.

Tell us about your partnerships

To date we are in partnership with the Ministry of National Education and Literacy (MENA) and the Regional Directorate for Youth, Vocational Training and Employment Centre (DRJFPE Centre).
* Partnership with the MENA provides us with educational materials and school supplies for our students each school year.
* With DRJFPE Centre, are already preparing training (practical phase) because it will be with us on the technical side.
* Note also that other partnerships will be forged in the coming days (social action ministry of justice, UNESCO ...)

Challenges: What challenges might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

The financial partners in the program. To convince them, we will invite them to the start of the program and involve them as much as possible while keeping them informed of the progress of the first training session. Then they will participate in the presentation of certificates ... We think that after that they will be willing to commit to finance projects.

How does your idea help young people create bright futures and improve opportunities for meaningful and long-term careers?

During detention, many will promise to create a better future for themselves. For this they are already thinking about the projects they will realize later. Unfortunately, they lack training and credibility to financial institutions. We would give them a chance, an opportunity to write their business plan, to turn to other occupations, to abandon the street and become entrepreneurs. They will be living testimonies, peers to other prisoners and in turn recruit other young people and promote the fight against unemployment as well as that against crime in Burkina Faso.
