About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

The formation of Unemployed Graduates Association Ghana (UGAG) is a symbol of the frustrations one suffers in spite of having a "qualification". Several thousands of graduates are thrown unto the job market with very few vacancies to absorb them. The unemployed graduate is not just a burden on his family but a threat to national security as they are forced to seek other ways of survival. The ripple effect on the economy is also enormous.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

We offer a platform that goes hand in hand with the university education that is specifically tailored to graduate students equipped to start their own businesses or social enterprises rather than going to seek jobs. We are empowering them to rather employ many others
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

We believe entrepreneurship is not a subject that should be left to lecturers who are not themselves entrepreneurs or Politicians who have served their whole lives in the public sector. There must be a deliberate, practical and innovative effort to acquaint the successful entrepreneurs with the young ones in order to train, coach and share their experiences with them. By creating an online platform for the CEOs/Business founders to engage the students directly via video conferencing no matter their location or busy schedule, we will be able to have many students across the various universities enroll and learn directly from the best in the field without having to converge at a particular location at the same time.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

We are set to cause a renaissance of the educational system. By engaging the online platform, we hope to scale across the African continent and solve the key problem of graduate unemployment.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Aside the little tuition fees we shall charge students, we intend to own at least 10% stake in all businesses that graduate through the academy. We also want to have a strong partnership with donor agencies who support our mission.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Most groups trying to tackle the problem of graduate unemployment do it through seminars, workshops and focusing on sensitization. To us, the above interventions are not strong enough to make entrepreneurs. We offer a tailored module that provide coaching, lessons from the successful entrepreneurs who have made it in the same environment, practical tasks that sends them to the market to learn the trade negotiations, sales, marketing, location etc. There is also a para-military module designed to instills virtues such as teamwork, discipline, patriotism, tenacity etc.

Founding Story

I have since my second year in the university had serious reservations about the educational system. i felt it was too theoretical and was not adequately preparing us for the job market. So by beginning of my third year, i took the bold step and wrote a proposal to the Vice Chancellor titled "Proposal to Education" asking him to set up a students committee to review the undergraduate educational system. After completing school, i started a business in Multimedia, J-Nissi Productions which took part in a business mentorship competition dubbed MY BUSINESS 2012. This was 10 days of training by top CEOs in Ghana, this was so practical so it occurred to me, what if we had this type of teaching and learning in our various universities?

Tell us about your partnerships

We intend to partner with the tertiary institutions whose student will be enrolling in the Academy. This will afford us the opportunity to benefit from some of their resources such as halls of residence, lecture halls, etc for "offline" training sessions during summer camps.
We also intend partnering with some corporate institutions who's Founders/CEOs will be mentoring our students.

Challenges: What challenges might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

The main challenge is with funding for the academy. One of the ways we hope to overcome this is by applying to participate in this competition thus getting to meet potential investors/donors such as MASTERCARD FOUNDATION.
One other challenge is with getting the TOP most successful Entrepreneurs and CEOs to make time to coach and mentor our students. We intend overcoming this by scheduling very flexible time table with the CEOs. This will allow us to go set up video conferencing facility in their offices or wherever conducive to record the sessions.

How does your idea help young people create bright futures and improve opportunities for meaningful and long-term careers?

We create a unique platform for students to chase their dreams and passions, no matter their programme of study at the university. There are some students reading courses in engineering but are truly talented and passionate about owning business in the media. Or a student training to become a doctor who is really about the helping the poor and marginalized in society and thus will want to set up an NGO or social enterprize. With Africa Innovation Academy, they can still graduate Engineers or Doctors and yet be equipped pursue their passion or dream
