Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

A life-saving informational system complete with online registration and a mobile phone application, helping patients in need to find blood donors and providing necessary information about blood donation process and the need of more blood donors. The system incorporates useful information and two registries - one for potential blood donors (people who has declared their will to help voluntary), and one of people in need of blood transfusion.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Lack of enough blood that is required for transfusions is a sever problem in Bulgaria. More than 600 people every day need blood and their life can be saved only if someone donate blood because it still has no substitute worldwide. Because of the lack of enough donated blood, very often people in need of transfusion are required to provide donors in order to have the respective procedure performed. This leads to sometimes frantic searches for blood donors by the patients and their relatives. It also spurs on an illegal market of blood donors, which compromises safety of both donors and recipients. People which can be blood donors in Bulgaria don't have enough information about the need, the process and how important is their help.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The project aims to promote and encourage voluntary blood donation in Bulgaria, to highlight the importance and need for more voluntary blood donors and to facilitate the people in need to find help.Through its functionality, the project provides easily and quickly access to useful information about the process, prerequisites and contraindications, blood banks etc. The system allows patients in need of blood transfusion to register their need and specify the blood type, number of donors needed and the town. This request is processed and the registered blood donors in the system that match the criteria are contacted. It eliminates the need for random searches and reduces the impact of the illegal blood market and the risks it has.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

An example that occurs daily for different surgeries and urgent needs: A patient is in need of a joint-replacement surgery. The hospital requests that the patient has to find 3 donors of blood before it would perform the operation. The patient starts searching for donors, first among family members, friends and then usually goes to the black market of blood. With the system, the patient or his relative registers the need for blood and that request is processed. The registered voluntary donors that match the search - by blood type and town are contacted and those who can help in this moment donate blood. The patient have the operation performed on time and without the need to pay for blood on the black market.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The system has the potential to cover every place in Bulgaria and reach much more people. The development of the mobile application for all types of smart phone devices will provide more opportunities for easier usage of the system and faster finding of necessary information concerning the blood donation process and needs. Eventually, the system also has the potential to be used in synch with blood banks systems and to serve as a base for a nationwide integrated blood donation system (with proper governmental support). It can be a leading weapon in combating the black market of blood in Bulgaria and improving healthcare in general. In the long term, the project would contribute to positive change of the attitude of the society towards voluntary blood donation. It will educate and inform and make a step towards overcoming the shortage of blood in Bulgaria.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Currently, the problem is addressed by a few NGOs, who try to promote voluntary blood donation and mainly organize blood collection drives. These efforts, however, are scarce and limited and make little to no impact on the global picture. None of the other organizations operates a similar system or provides a real solution for the same problem. The problem is also addressed by the national blood centers but their efforts are very limited.

Dedication is the key for the team both in BOVBD and in Digimark. The system needs to operate around the clock, every day of the year, in order to be effective and to fulfil its purpose. Technically, all issues need to be resolved as soon as possible. Operationally, each entry and request needs to be reviewed by the operators quickly, a contact with the person - established, and the most appropriate actions - taken immediately, since usually the time for reaction is limited. The experts from both BOVBD and Digimark have separated their participation in the project according their knowledge and abilities. The high success rate proves that so far the system is operated very effectively. From our experience we realized that when people see that their efforts have results they are much more satisfied in what they do and their will to help and to continue helping is stronger.

Project Summary
Co-Creation Model: Tell us about your main strategic partners and how the partnership truly create value. For each Partner please include its type (business/social/public), its name, a short description, its key motivation to participate in the co-creation project, and the key contributions it is making in the co-creation project. Please follow the format displayed below:

Partner 1: Bulgarian Organization of Voluntary Blood Donation (BOVBD). An NGO promoting the need for voluntary, unremunerated blood donation; aiming to educate the society in the need for safe blood and blood products and to fight against the illegal market of blood.
These goals of BOVBD are essentially all covered by the project which is a unique tool assisting greatly in all the activities of the Organization.
BOVBD provides the knowledge behind the functions and various fields of the system, knowing the specific needs and problems that it addresses and providing key information for the proper functioning and development of the entire system, so it can be efficient and operable both effectively and safely.

Partner 2: Digimark LTD. A company specializing in the development of web-based and mobile applications and software.
A key partner providing the knowledge and the technical support and development behind the system. For Digimark LTD participating in the project was a good way to show their social and corporate responsibility and use their advanced knowledge in supporting the efforts of BOVBD in solving a real problem for the Bulgarian society.
They provide the entire technical support and maintenance of the system, as well as further development and fine-tuning of the system and mobile app.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact. Please specify using qualitative and quantitative data (e.g. # of indirect and direct beneficiaries); help us understand how this solution truly makes a difference.

The system had made a significant difference in its first year of existence. More than 450 people are registered as voluntary donors, covering over 30 locations. The system was successfully used to help find donors in more than 100 separate urgent searches for blood.
With the more focused and precise search, efficiency of the searches has risen from about 25% success rate prior to the launch of the system, to almost 90% success rate when using it. It has an even higher impact when searching for rare blood types (such as negative type blood).
The system saves patients and their relatives the stress and effort to find blood donors on a shortened term, in an already stressful situation. It also prevents delays in scheduled interventions due to lack of blood, and assists in emergency needs, essentially helping to save lives.

Funding: How is your project financial supported? [select all that apply]

Individuals, NGOs, Businesses.

Sustainability Plan: Has your project already reached financial sustainability? If not, what is this solutio’s plan to ensure financial sustainability? Do the main partners have enough stake to sustain the solution? If this project requires limited budget, how will other resources be secured to maintain or grow this work?

For now, the project is financially stable. The initial development is complete and current maintenance costs are neglectable. Funding will be necessary for improvement and further development of the system, and promotions. The development of the mobile application for all types of smart phone devices will provide more opportunities for easier usage of the system and faster finding of necessary information. The partners count mainly on donations by businesses and voluntary work. Promotion of the project is paramount for securing funding for further development and full use of the potential of the system. The positive results of the project lead to increasing interest and more potential partners and volunteers.

Founding Story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the Partners to get started and/or to see the potential for this to succeed.

It was a spontaneous idea coming up at a casual meeting between people from BOVBD and Digimark. Partners in Digimark have just encountered the problem with lack of blood and need for blood donors themselves and were thinking of a way to support the BOVBD efforts and to make finding donors easier. Discussing the matter and pointing the main problems we sparked the idea about a complete system, integrated with a mobile phone application that helps potential donors by giving them the necessary information and uniting them to help. When we started preparing the project was born the idea that we should find a way to help the urgent needs with analogical register, moreover it would be easier when we have the register of the blood donors.

About the Co-Creation
Barriers: What main barriers may you have encountered to co-create during the creation and implementation of the project and how did you try to overcome them?

The main obstacle was creating a system that can be used easily by the people it is aimed at and that would be both efficient for them, and safe (meaning it would have safeguards against misuse). These issues were resolved by technical solutions, as well as with deliberately leaving certain aspects of the system to be operated by operators, rather than automatically.
We realized that people have much more questions and confusions concerning blood donation process and needs, so we incorporated an opportunity for questions and fast answers - We also plan to conduct information meetings and lectures in various institutions and organizations in order to provide more information,

Governance: What is the type of the relationship between the partners? (e.g. joint venture, contractual relationship, joint project...)

This is a joint project between the two partners. BOVBD is in charge of the whole project and operation of the system, while Digimark is responsible for the technical support and maintenance of the system and the mobile app.

Interaction model: How is the project a transformative partnership? How is the interaction transforming the partnering organizations and their employees/ leadership in terms of creating a new vision, new management practices, new skills and new organizational structures? Please provide for concrete examples

Both partners in the project had to acquire new competences in order to be completely useful to the process of creating the whole system. All of the managing board and a few volunteers from BOVBD were trained by Digimark partners to work with the system, operating the blood donors registrations and the registrations of the people in need of blood. Several trainings by BOVBD were organized for the managers and employees of Digimark, providing valuable information about the specific issues of the blood donation process in order for the developers to be informed more completely about the needs of the project and to be able to both propose adequate solutions, as well as to develop the system so that it would work properly and efficiently. BOVBD also organized several trainings of volunteers to promote the system.
