Career Moves is the first inclusive job platform in Europe which offers equal opportunities for people with disabilities to apply. We have developed an online recruiting tool which enables the perfect matching, bringing people with disabilities into jobs where their disability does not play a role.
We have also developed the first consulting rationale for companies focussing on economic advantages of the employment of disabled people.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

In Austria, around 15% of the population have a disability. Only 30% of them are active on the labour market. These numbers apply for people with disabilities of different qualification levels. This is a huge socioeconomic problem: it means that the social welfare state has to cover millions of Euros to support disabled people, and at the same time people with disabilities are excluded by the society. When working with companies, we very often hear that they want to employ more people with disabilities, but they are not sure, how they would fit into their companies. We consult hundreds of companies each year, to ensure they open up for applications from people with disabilities. This way, we often change the companies' philosophy.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Career Moves has been working with a radical new approach of bringing people with disabilities into jobs since 2009. The 1st part of the solution is a completely new online tool (plug-in, created together with This tool enables a perfect matching: bringing disabled jobseekers together with jobs where their disability does not play a role. We focus on abilities, not on disabilities. The 2nd part is a completely new consulting rationale for companies: we focus on concrete business advantages through the employment of people with disabilities (not on mercy and charity). We convince companies of their performance ability. Thus, we have been able to offer more than 10.000 jobs for people with disabilities in the past 3 years.
Impact: How does it Work

To reach as many companies as possible, Career Moves starts with cold calling companies explaining them what it is about. Then the sales team meets HR or CSR representatives to consult them about the strengths of people with disabilities and how they could be part of their organization. After the company is convinced of the added value of people with disabilities they post their open jobs online with specific icons on the Career Moves website. For job seekers with disabilities it is of greatest importance to see which employers are open minded and can imagine them as job performers. Many people who found a job through Career Moves told us they had become desperate, as employers normally had not even answered their applications.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

As Career Moves has been very successful in Austria, we decided to bring our award winning system into other countries by creating a social franchising system. This will help us to ensure quality of new job platforms in other countries and makes it easier for us to replicate. We have lots of interest from Germany, the UK, Slovakia and Spain already and the objective is to operate all over Europe in the future to reach a wide cultural change for people with disabilities in the workplace and the society. In addition, we are just starting the pilot phase of our new idea, the business forum Disability Performance Austria, in Austria. With this forum, we want to promote cultural change within companies even further and help companies to adjust to the needs of people with disabilities. This best practice sharing forum can be connected to the social franchising of the job platform.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There is no other inclusive job platform for people with and without disabilities in Austria. Lots of NGOs are working on placing people with disabilities on the job market, but they usually focus on charity and mercy, lack a business focused rationale and often do not talk the same 'language' as companies do. This is where Career Moves has its place as a social business in bridging the gap between the public and the private sector. We are also the only platform giving disability related information on concrete job offers to applicants. And we developed the first online matching tool, bringing together people with disabilities with jobs where their disability does not play a role. To use this first mover advantage, we are planning to quickly expand Career Moves to other countries as well.


The most important thing in ensuring closeness to both, business and public sector is that Career Moves is co-founded by both: the CEO of a mainstream job platform with a business background and a disability expert. They are responsible for the strategic direction of Career Moves in order to be competitive on the market. Together they develop new technical online solutions (homepage, mobile App). The main part of the operational team consists of a sales team which consults companies about which jobs would be appropriate to be opened for which disability. Another team member is responsible for the close alignment with NGOs working with people with disabilities to give them access to new jobs and companies. Both profit from the cooperation: Career Moves consultants get access to Careesma's company clients, and Careesma sales force gets contacts to new companies through Career Moves.

Career Moves has offered more than 10.000 jobs for persons with disabilities online since its foundation in 2009, with more than one million clicks on its job offers in 2013 only. In 2013, Career Moves was in contact with more than 1000 companies and was mentioned 100 times in media.
Based on the feedback we got from our clients and an extrapolation we did, we report that 112 people with disabilities got a job through Career Moves and 189 applicants and company representatives were consulted in our Service Centre in 2013. As not all disabilities are obvious, the actual number might be much higher. Therefore, we want to improve in the area of social impact measurement over the following months. Regarding cultural change, a survey we conducted in 2013 with 250 CEOs and HR representatives showed that 83% found it was positive for their companies to employ people with disabilities.

Career Moves operates as a profit neutral project. The idea is that job posts on Career Moves need more consulting than those on the mainstream job platform, as a main part of the work is to sensitise companies for the performance of people with disabilities. Thus, a big part of Career Moves is funded by the state - who is not able to connect with companies the way a private company is.
Furthermore, most companies pay for the jobs posted. To sustain the model over time, different cooperation partners are searched at the moment to become independent of public sources. Per example, a social franchising system is designed to implement the system internationally. Furthermore, new revenue channels are being created, e.g. company cooperations regarding employer branding and the best practice sharing business forum which includes a consulting and membership fee for companies.

Career Moves Co-Founder Gregor Demblin first came into contact with the disability issue when he had an accident at the age of 18. Paralized from the shoulders downwards, he has to use a wheelchair since then. When he recognised all the wrong images and prejudices, and how differently you are perceived as a person in a wheelchair, his vision of changing society began to grow.
Gregors aim is to bring people with and without disabilities together on the job market. The idea is that with every disabled person getting a job, not only his or her life changes, but also the lives of their collegues, learning how to treat each other: simply normal.
On his search for supporters Gregor found Wolfgang Kowatsch, CEO of From the first moment, Wolfgang was exited about the idea and supported Gregor with technological and business know how. Together, they developed Career Moves.

About the Co-Creation
Barriers: What main barriers may you have encountered to co-create during the creation and implementation of the project and how did you try to overcome them?

The main difficulty is funding a social focussed project through normal market activities. When we found out that we are doing a lot of work in the key interest of the state (develop matching online tool, create job offers, consult companies etc.), we applied for public funding. We are now working on a hybrid model, funded by private and public sources.
Working in the social sector, in cooperation with a for-profit-company, also is difficult when it comes to prioritize next steps and to providing ressources. As Gregor Demblin and Wolfgang Kowatsch were both very interrested in bringing Career Moves forward, they always tried to find good compromises. Mr. Kowatsch made huge efforts to convince his shareholders to invest additional ressources in Career Moves. Without this support, Career Moves would not exist today.

Governance: What is the type of the relationship between the partners? (e.g. joint venture, contractual relationship, joint project...)

Career Moves was founded in 2009 as a not-for-profit association. The main idea of Career Moves is to find a partner mainstream job platform, to use its IT (database) and to implement plug-ins with useful information for disabled job-seekers (tags, search etc.). It is a win-win-situation: Careesma gets access to new companies and applicants, and Career Moves gets a perfect online tool and access to all existing Careesma clients.
Career Moves is currently working on scaling to other countries, with the aim to set up similar parnerships with leading job platforms in other european countries.

Interaction model: How is the project a transformative partnership? How is the interaction transforming the partnering organizations and their employees/ leadership in terms of creating a new vision, new management practices, new skills and new organizational structures? Please provide for concrete examples

Careesma and the Career Moves teams work closely together in their daily business with companies. Since 2009, they have transformed 413 companies` mindset. Career Moves does not only transform other companies, but also Careesma, which learns about the competitive advantages of working with people with disabilities.
Furthermore all Careesma salespersons bring the Career Moves philosophy to their clients. The disability knowhow has become one of Careesma's USPs.
The partnership is transformative since it consists of two strong pillars: First, Gregors knowledge, credibility and vision to change and open up society for the performance potential of people with disabilities. Second, Wolfgangs know-how and business focus, to provide and develop a good online tool and to generate better, 'eye-level' access to companies. Both help to create a purpose driven enterprise and environment.
