About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

I wish to address the personal hygiene of the street children in Senegal. They are most of the time very dirty and it is a big problem because they are sick and very thick. Even when people deal with cholera or even ebola nobody think about them specially in term of cleanliness.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

I want to create a place where street children can have a bath. Most of the time I discuss with them and I ask them questions like : "why don't you put shoes? Why don't you wash your clothes? Or why are you always dirty?" And they say they only wash their clothes each sunday at beach because they can't afford to pay a bill for water each month. So I think that they should have a place where they can come just to get clean and make clean their clothes. So people will give them more respect and they will feel as clean as every child around. Because when you are dirty nobody want to approach you so anybody knows your problem because they even don't want to discuss with you. Besides street children feel mostly ashamed because of their aspect.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Most of the street children see a lot of opportunities being closed because they are dirty. And they are exposed to any diseases. So giving them a chance to stay clean is a gateway, it will make them more confident too.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

It will make a difference since it addresses a social problem. It is not because street children are marginalized that we should not think of their well being. I think the real impact is especially in the innovation, I have never seen in this country a place where they can go and have this kind of service.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The full impact is to see the service being implanted all around the country from the capital to the rest of the regions. During the first year I will start in the capital because the majority of the street children live there. Then once it will be very popular and that people start to know the service I will plan to expand and put it in the other regions.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

People who live around can utilize the space for their own service and they will pay too because I will need money to pay the bills (water and energy) and perhaps the laon of the espace if I don't own the space. The only difference is that services will be affordable for the street children.

Founding Story

I'm the co founder of Help the Street Children (HSC) / Aider les Enfants de la Rue (AER) and we support street children by putting them in schools, giving them donations and organizing free vaccination day for them. I always notice their dirtiness and one day I was watching a movie where a young boy go by himself to a laundry service. And it was like an illumination I told myself that's what street children need here in Senegal a place like this.

Tell us about your partnerships

Partners could be manufacturer of washing machine because I will need a lot of machines to implement the laundry services.

Challenges: What challenges might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

It will be something new and the street children might not adopt it easily. There is also the problem of money. I mean how they are going to pay the service. However with a good advertisement and an affordable price for them it will work.

How does your idea help young people create bright futures and improve opportunities for meaningful and long-term careers?

My idea is to create a laundry service where street children can not only wash their clothes but also have a bath. It will help them remain healthy and avoid a lot of diseases. Besides they are mostly rejected by the society because of their physical aspect (dirty) so by giving them an opportunity to be clean they will have more chances to get a job or to be accepted by the society.
