About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Small producers, especially women microentreprenuers face a host of problems in trying to create products and sell them. The GREAT Women platform handholds small women microentrpreneurs up the value and supply chain, filling in the gaps for successful market access of products. This multisectoral platform includes help by government and international institutions aligned with product developers, designers, social entreps and retailers.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The Platform links the development and R&D stages of product development and market testing of products toward a cohesive and startegic brand position of lifestyle products. The gaps are fulfilled through mutli-sectoral partnerships between government, international funding, private sector. It teaches women microentreprenuers to create products demanded by the market and not what they want. It supports artisan creation, livelihood, small enterprise that focus on traditional food processes and local culture's sustainability. The GREAT Women Brand is the final product outcome that everyone sees in the retail space. It rallies am advocacy lifestyle purchasing focus for the conscious consumer in wanting to help economically empower women.
Impact: How does it Work

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

In 2013, under the GREAT Women program the ECHOsi Foundation posted an impact reach of approximately 500 women, with around 900 additional beneficiaries through cascade workshops, impacting 28,500 women (women x 5 family members x direct impacts of women neighbor) and household members. It is now the gender platform of the Philippines which will be run nationwide for the next six years. It is now being planned for replication in ASEAN through the launch of the GREAT Women ASEAN Collection and trade initiatives for women entrepreneurs. Future impact includes value-supply chain strengthening, metrics of women helped through sales, retail reach not only in the Philippines but global markets not only due to export but through e-commerce. Product development will be strategic on helping artisans, support cultural preservation while creating lifestyle and specialty food products.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

1) 5 years: Philippines nationwide reach, consolidating product lines and their producers production capacities for provincial, national and global distribution to niche specialty markets. 2)In one year, 2015 launch the brand-collection in ASEAN, in 3-5 years replication of the full program in at least five ASEAN countries, with markets opened in at least 8 ASEAN countries, North America, Europe and Canada thus making GREAT Women a global brand, with a development platform that includes trade facilitation and export, supply-chain linkages all to help women economically empowered.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

With the development aid funding in for the next six years in the Philippines, government will cover for R&D of products which the ECHosi Foundation will work on as private sector lead to this multi-stakeholder project. ECHOstore will market test products and open the market avenues through retail, store-in-store partnerships with other retailers, e-commerce, and export. Products sales will bring returns for livelihood sustainability.

Founding Story

It was when we were doing product development on the ground, with small women microentreprenuers that I realized how hard it was to keep correcting and changing their amateur logos. They needed professionalization of packaging and branding - very much needed to enter a specialty market where they could command higher profits. Creating a "hip" and stylish GREAT Women Brand, and telling the women's stories became an aspirational brand as they went through our product development program. When we launch the brand, we never expected it to be so well received by everyone, and all excited about what the brand represents and the potential it had as a vehicle to help women economically empowered.

I take the lead in the integrated and synergistic direction of the development programs as we build the brand's collection, and can be identified as the "architect" of the platform from the private sector side. Pacita Juan supports the marketing directions. Reena Francisco supports the brand visual design directions and also helps in the collection creation. Ricky Cruz leads microfinancing for the small producers. Imelda Canuel handles Programs

The ECHOsi Foundation (Empowering Communities with Hope and Opportunities Through Sustainable Initiatives) is the non-profit arm of the green retailer and social enterprise ECHostore Sustainable Lifestyle (ECHO=Environment Community Hope Organization). ECHOsi develops programs that help community product reach markets as ECHOstore sells. ECHOsi was invited by the Philippine Commission on Women to bring in the BID services and enterprise side.

Challenges: What challenges might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

Budgetary and organizational structures to fill the gaps. Due to the innovation of creating the brand and success of the project that supports market access preparation for women microentrepreneurs, we have aggressively built partnerships with local government, national agencies and donor funding. Now, the GREAT Women platform is the gender platform of the country with support funding for the next six years to scale it up. ASEAN wants to scale this regionally in the ten countries also.
