Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

Generazione Dynamo is a musical, specifically programmed on the basis of the peculiar needs of sick children, already hosted at Dynamo Camp. It is also performed in hospitals (the start up phase will be carried out at S. Paolo Hospital in Milan) for acute diseases.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What if a sick child could simply be a child, and become a musical's character?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Every year in Italy more than 10000 youth people suffer from acute and chronic diseases. This means that they have to bear exhausting terapies, which force them to stay in hospital for a long time. In most cases this means that they suffer from isolation and cannot live with

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Thanks to a dedicated professional staff coming from the musical industry and the experienced and well performing Dynamo staff, children can discover a new world (Musical), without thinking about their limits, while practicing a healthy activity. This solution is innovative and effective, because it combines physical activity with music, acting and singing in a smart and innovative way. In addition to this, this project is very attractive for the target we are addressing. At this moment, the project is in its initial phase, because it just started at San Paolo Hospital in Milan, with a group of adolescents, but we are already planning to increase the target population in order to broadly address this specific and emerging pathology.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Based on the consolidated success of the first outreach program (Radio Dynamo), at the beginning of 2014 Dynamo Camp decided to expand its activities, with the primary purpose of addressing an emergent and new pathology: child obesity. The strategy is the following: Start up phase: it just started at San Paolo Hospital in Milan with 15 obese adolescents at the end of February and it will last until May. These kids will have to learn some singing and dancing exercises to repeat at home, during their day-to-day life, in order to permanently acquire an healthy living standard. End of the year: a show will be performed in a theater in Milan, in order to raise funds for the implementation of the project in the next years.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

During 2013 sessions, almost 1200 campers were hosted at Dynamo Camp. Children come from Italy, Germany, Belarus, Latvia, Morocco, Jordan and the Middle East. - Dynamo Camp has already planned to increase the number of kids hosted and the countries of origin hosted year by year - The musical is easy to replicate inside Serious Fun Children's Network (16 camps all around the world), since it is part of Dynamo's outreach program, which carries out recreational therapies' activities in pediatric hospitals and foster houses. It often operates in delicate situations, like post transplant, so it is very flexible. - The musical could be also replicated by those who already carry out recreational therapy's activities.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

A lot of institutions and/or organizations are following a similar approach, however Dynamo Camp is the only one to be well connected at national level with hospitals, patients and families' associations thanks to its preeminent activity. In Italy, there is a number of initiatives carried out by different actors, that addresses the same problem. However, to date this initiatives are mainly based on sport and nutritional education. In this sense, our approach is different because of the following reasons: - a very close collaboration with 3 different actors, Compagnia della Rancia, one of the leading theater's companies in Italy, Scuola del Musical di Novara and San Paolo Hospital - mix between music and sport - media coverage coming from Radio Dynamo and our media partners

The project has the right mix of roles and qualifications needed to achieve the objective: Dynamo Camp is the organization in charge of the general management and initial financial support. It is operational since 2007 in recreational therapy and it can be considered a leader in this field. Compagnia della Rancia and Scuola del Teatro Musicale di Novara provide the professional experience in the theatrical field. Specifically, the team is composed of: - one head of the project from Radio Dynamo, who is in charge of the general management and coordination, assisted by Compagnia della Rancia for the strategic direction and by the School for the artistic direction - one musical's manager, coming from the School and hired by Dynamo for the entire duration of the project, assisted by one or two Radio Dynamo's interns - one technician

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact. Please specify using qualitative and quantitative data (e.g. # of indirect and direct beneficiaries); help us understand how this solution truly makes a difference.

The project is now in its initial phase. The Hospital is in charge of the medical supervision, regarding the activities carried out in its structure, while the Musical company and the School are working with Dynamo for the artistic direction. A professional musical profile, coming for the School, is now working at the Hospital with Dynamo staff. She has an outstanding experience in the musical industry.
So far, the project has involved 15 adolescents with eating disorders at San Paolo Hospital.
Regarding the next step, we foresee to involve other kids from Dynamo Camp’s summer sessions, in order to include other pathologies in this specific project and increase the number of beneficiaries. Campers will also perform during the final show.

Funding: How is your project financial supported? [select all that apply]

Sustainability Plan: Has your project already reached financial sustainability? If not, what is this solutio’s plan to ensure financial sustainability? Do the main partners have enough stake to sustain the solution? If this project requires limited budget, how will other resources be secured to maintain or grow this work?

As this project is in its start up phase, the set up costs are entirely covered through the consolidated fundraising process of Dynamo Camp, which is the promoter subject.
The sustainability strategy consists of:
- direct selling of tickets for the final show that will take place in a theatre in Milan during the last part of the year
- make musical's contents available for a low-cost download on our on line platform
- the annual fundraising strategy of Dynamo, that will cover part of the project's costs

Founding Story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the Partners to get started and/or to see the potential for this to succeed.

Music and well being, obesity and social exclusion.
This idea was born thanks to Radio Dynamo.
Radio Dynamo is our outreach program, which uses radio contents in hospitals and foster houses in order to bring recreational therapy outside the camp to children who cannot reach it due to serious illnesses.
During one stage of Radio Dynamo at San Paolo Hospital, one of the physicians proposed to adapt the idea to a pathology we never addressed: obesity.
The musical follows the same approach, combining art/music with physical activity, in order to directly fight obesity.

About the Co-Creation
Barriers: What main barriers may you have encountered to co-create during the creation and implementation of the project and how did you try to overcome them?

The main difficulty may come from the different type and scope of the leading organizations, because the company is not keen in managing projects involving sick children.
In addition to this, it is the first time, for Dynamo, that a recreational therapy project will become a big external event/show.
It comes without saying that the two leading organizations have two different identities and missions, but the common vision will guarantee the success of the challenge.
Having said that, once the reliability and professionalism of both Scuola del Musical di Novara and Compagnia della Rancia has been verified, the project could easily start.
Since the project has just started we cannot list any difficulty, from an operational point of view.

Governance: What is the type of the relationship between the partners? (e.g. joint venture, contractual relationship, joint project...)

The project involves 3 main partners, in the following way:
- Recruiting Staff: the staff is selected by both Dynamo Camp and Scuola del Musical di Novara
- Activity performance: the project at San Paolo Hospital with obese boys will be carried out by the figure selected within Scuola di Novara, with the technical support coming from Dynamo staff and the hospital’s medical supervision.
- The final show in Milan, will be sponsored by Compagnia della Rancia, which is also in charge of the general coordination of the project.

Interaction model: How is the project a transformative partnership? How is the interaction transforming the partnering organizations and their employees/ leadership in terms of creating a new vision, new management practices, new skills and new organizational structures? Please provide for concrete examples

Since the partner organizations are characterized by different competences, this project is a good "mean" in terms of cooperation and exchange of complementary skills and working modalities.
Specifically, Dynamo Camp can bring the ability to work with delicate issues and flexibility to adapt to children's necessities. Compagnia della Rancia and Scuola Musicale di Novara bring their experience in the musical and theatrical field.
At the end of the project, every partner will be enriched.

How did you find out about this competition?

Thanks to Daniele De Cillis, who is a Boehringer's employee and has worked pro-bono for 6 months at Dynamo Camp.
