About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Ideally, mentorship is a dynamic, life-long process collaborative, reciprocal relationship focused on a mentee’s personal and professional transformation. Mentorship is seen in the Ghanaian society as a short-term events, instead of a process and a relationship-building with open interaction between a mentor mentee at different levels and stages of their career. Giving guidance and technical support at all stage of the mentee life.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Transform creates platform for mentors to meet 30 mentees 4 times in a month within 5 - 6 hours on very Saturdays to provide guidance, support, encouragement and inspiration to mentees through sharing life experiences and discussing options in career and in life. Sessions will be informal with a lots of interactions of mentor mentee relationship. The Transformational Assets of young people depends on Internal and External Assets. Below is how mentees would be Transform, Transform1 works on Personal Transformation with the 4Cs (Competence, Confidence, Connection and Character) and Transform2 and 3 works on the External Assets which are Idea Transformation and Start-up Transformation. All Training and presentations are by mentor.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The primary focus of Transform are young people who have the desire to becoming entrepreneurs (students, employed, graduate etc.). Currently Samakose is conducting a survey to determine the percentage of young people desire for entrepreneurship and the desire for salaried job with their reasons. After the survey, Samakose opens admission for thirty candidates to be part of the Transform where they will be called Transformers. Transformers will be taking through the Transform1 (Personal Transformation) for the first month, then to Transform2 (Idea Transformation) and Transform3 (Start-up Transformation). Transformers are then exposes to practical experience after every weekly session on Radio and television to share what was learnt.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

The approach Samakose uses for training to improve performance comprises -- see it -- feel it -- trust it. The transformers see the process, feel the process and had to trust the process; we believe trust is the ultimate of making a change, if you can trust then you can make a change. Transform is kick starting on January 2015. Transform with its strategic plan by 2015, is aimed at 330 young people Transformed at Transform 1, 270 at Transform 2 and 150 at Transform 3. In all we hope to have 750 young people transformed, out of it some will be Transformed whiles others Transforming.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The mission is to connect the enterprising youth with innovative programs that offer opportunities to personal excellence through balance activities for the next generation of corporate leaders in Africa With this we envision to transform mentees into potential mentors to future mentees with our media programs as well as outreach projects into communities, schools etc, will be facilitated by some of these Transformers. Transform main goal for 2020 is to facilitate the establishment of 10 successful independent enterprises running either for profit or non-profit for social and economic benefit

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Samakose as an organization has had experience of working with other organization, for profit and non-profit. Currently Transform is supported by an IT school and a Radio Broadcasting Company and hoping to seek for more support within businesses and philanthropies. Also Participants of Transform are required to pay $20 to be part of the project and its activities at all stages of the project.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

AfriLead Ghana and others have projects on mentorship which grants a great contribution, but we think more is needed for mentees to explore, that is a bounding relationship. The importance of a bonding relationship between mentor and mentee is indisputable. However, Transform believes in the power of sharing experiences and ideas within the wider group. Participation in our weekly group activities gives all mentors and mentees the opportunity to meet each other and to take advantage of the opportunity to share, learn, grow – or simply meet new people!

Founding Story

Ever since, in high school I always aimed of becoming an entrepreneur, I was so passionate, feeding myself with the skills and attitudes in which I go to every conferences, workshop, training and more that I could afford just to adopt these abilities. Each day, I say to myself, if I had what I have today or a close mentor, I would have not been the same anymore. With my experience in developing my abilities, I come to realize that entrepreneurship is not just an art, is all about purpose and my purpose is to become a business philosopher helping young people realizing their dreams and that brought about Samakose and Transform.

The young nature of Samakose with its great innovative programs and activities has not gotten a well structured team. Samakose has only four staff, working as volunteers and collected from other projects which they played major roles Being a member of the civil society organization we have had administrative support from the network and also engaging with some of its volunteers. We hoping by 2015, we will have a well structured staff.
