Imagine a world where women who beat the cancer do not face problems in finding a new job, which fits their new lives.Imagine a world where there is no discrimination, even though for example a woman lost her both breasts in order to save her life and she does not have money for breast reconstruction. Stop! Do not dream any more! This is already reality. OncoHelp in collaboration with TRW Automotive Safety Systems is creating reality.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer in women and one of the most frequent cause of death in women. According to statistics,in developed countries, one out of eight women develops a malignant mammary tumor, during their lifetime.In Romania there are detected about 6000 cases of breast cancer every year. In developed countries, there are diagnosed 60% of cases in early stage, in Romania two thirds of cases are diagnosed in the III-rd and IV-th stages instead. Due to late diagnosis the number of women who underwent mastectomy is large enough so that medical reality becomes a social reality, losing one or both breasts affects social and professional reintegration of survivors of cancer as well.

OncoHelp in collaboration with TRW Automotive wants to support all women and girls in companies and schools within the region through an educational program conducted by specialists of The Oncology Center OncoHelp by implementing a Medical Education Program on Breast Cancer Prevention in Western Region and also developing access to employment to underprivileged populations , survivors of the battle against breast cancer respectively. Our mission is to involve as many people, organizations and companies and to create a network called solidarity facing this disease, so watching both prevention and early diagnosis and subsequently facilitating their access to appropriate jobs.

Mariana has just undergone a double mastectomy. She was diagnosed in the III-rd stage, fought for her life, followed the treatment prescribed by the doctor and managed to defeat the disease. But the costs were huge: she lost both breasts and her job. Due to reduced financial resources and lack of supporting of the state she failed to perform breast reconstruction. For several months she has been trying to find a job, suitable to her new physical condition but she failed, being discriminated. Luckily for Mariana, she is psychologicaly advised within Oncohelp Association, and she will be the first person to benefit from the partnership with TRW thus being first breast cancer survivor employed by this company.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

According to statistics, in Romania are diagnosed each year around 6,000 cases of breast cancer two thirds of the diagnosed in the III-rd and the IV-th stages, for which the incidence of mortality is very high. To counteract this we want to implement a medical responsibility program in the whole country within the public and private institutions that helps women working in disadvantaged workplaces: toxicity, physical presure, physical effort etc.; we want to implement medical education programs among schools , we want to shout in chorus toghether with our patients who are diagnosed with cancer: "We won!"; we want to see children growing up with their healthy mothers; we want to see families reunited and also we want to achieve their social and professional reintegration at work places adapted depending on the degree of disability acquired.
Sustainability

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Although various campaigns were conducted for the awareness of the importance of early diagnosis of cancer, through public events, through the dissemination of various printed materials and through the sale of products in order to support the purchase of various equipment required to diagnose and treat, there is not present in Romania, an institution who effectively conduct the type of education programs for women on self-palpation techniques and knowledge of the risk factors that lead to breast cancer that Oncohelp intend to deploy and there is no partnership agreements to facilitate access to jobs for people who have survived cancer.

Team

At the level of associations two teams will be involved in project implementation: one forming multidisciplinary team that will support the education program in companies and high schools from the Western region (which will be composed of a radiologist / radiographer, an oncologist, a psychologist and volunteers from Help25) and also a coordinating team project consisting of development director, physician oncologist and spokesman. The Development Director will try to attract funding sources necessary for the development of the project, will conclude partnership agreements with companies, institutions who will want to receive the services offered.Spokesperson will also seek to attract needed funds through press conferences held in order to advertising the project.The company partner will provide jobs and financial support.

The Medical Educational Program on Breast Cancer Prevention is designed for female employees in companies and high school students from the Western Region and aims to increase awareness of breast cancer issues, educating women on self-palpation techniques and knowledge of risk factors. Thanks to the initiative of the OncoHelp Association over 15,000 women and teenage girls will benefit from medical education program in 2014-2015 (being referred over 50 schools and 100 companies). Also, in order to facilitate the access to jobs adjusted on the degree of the disability acquired, it aims to cooptate other companies besides the official partner, the ideal to be achieved is that all women who will receive services offered by Oncohelp and are looking for a job, to find it according to their new physical conditions.

Do the main partners have enough stake to sustain the solution? If this project requires limited budget, how will other resources be secured to maintain or grow this work?

This project still lacks the necessary funds to progress. Solution to ensure financial sustainability of the project is to seek the financial help of the local authorities and of the companies where we will run that program in order to support the Medical Education Program on Breast Cancer Prevention, and also for developing access to employment to underprivileged populations respectively survivors of the battle with breast cancer the financial support to conduct the activities will be provided by each partner companies, both TRW and other companies that will be baked later in the program. The other solution would be to just win this contest, the prize of 20,000 euros is enough at least to begin to initiate and develop targeted programs.

Dealing daily with many patients diagnosed late due to poor access to information and lack of performing equipment of diagnosis, which have problems of reintegration, employers reluctant because the disease may recur, because tehe person is "different," because the work-place must be effectively adapted depending on the degree of disability acquired as a result of sustained beating with cancer, did arise the idea of educational program that will be held in the Western Region of the country, in the public and private institutions and also highlighted the need for initial partnership agreement with TRW, following later the cooptation of other companies interested in supporting people who beat cancer and seeking reintegration in a new, unique way, different from the usual direct financial support,

About the Co-Creation
Barriers: What main barriers may you have encountered to co-create during the creation and implementation of the project and how did you try to overcome them?

During the fundraising campaign for providing Oncohelp Centre with performant equipments, the companies interested in supporting the activities of the association reported interest in facilitating access to the educational programs to prevent breast cancer to their women's employees .
Also, the partner company showed Interest in facilitating reintregration of the former cancer patients in the labor market and it is interested to support former cancer patients, including by facilitating their access to employment through jobs provided, in the future .The respective company had already hired three people who were previously diagnosed with other forms of cancer. So the interest exists, the only barriers encountered in implementation of the project will be the financial ones but they will be overcome by the funds which will be drawn.

Governance: What is the type of the relationship between the partners? (e.g. joint venture, contractual relationship, joint project...)

There is a partenership agreement between the two initiators of the project, i.e. Oncohelp Association and TRW Automotive; the rights and obligations of each party are clearly defined. Partnerships of this kind will be signed with other companies, institutions co-opted during the project implementation.

Interaction model: How is the project a transformative partnership? How is the interaction transforming the partnering organizations and their employees/ leadership in terms of creating a new vision, new management practices, new skills and new organizational structures? Please provide for concrete examples

It is a transformative partenership because different partners interacting at different levels in the project implementation, thus the interaction will transform the partner organizations and their employees / leaders by creating a new vision directed towards effective changes at the societal level through education that their employees will benefit; through job opportunities offered to former cancer patients; new practices and skills will be created because hiring such persons is not similar to the normal rules; that rules should be amended; selection and recruitment procedures will be designed; new workplaces must be designed, according to their occupant special requirements ; there will be changes in the structure of the companies depending on identifying the risk factors which lead to cancer.
