Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

If we have to worry about the state of the world we are going to hand down to our children, we should also be asking “what kind of children are we leaving for the world?” Ma classe solidaire raises young people’s awareness as to the problems we face in the world today.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

children where the answer to a responsible world?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Teachers are lacking implicative and innovative projects for their students. They are looking for solidarity initiatives which think outside the box.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Ma classe solidaire is a project which raises awareness of economic and social issues in 3 steps: KNOWLEDGE: Raising awareness to global issues; to social and solidarity economy and to the entrepreneurs replacing humans at the heart of businesses; to microcredit, a tool used to combat instability among populations excluded from traditional banking systems. EXPERIMENT: Debates on entrepreneurship and role-playing games “in the skin of a micro-entrepreneur”. ACT: Launch a class project to support a micro-entrepreneur, chosen by the students through the platform, with a solidarity loan. Throughout the year, the team will work alongside the teacher and students to implement the project.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Classes who have followed through with the educational project to the “ACT” stage have supported over 100 micro-entrepreneurs globally with solidarity loans.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

• Contribution of sustainable development, social and solidarity economy and microcredit knowledge • Acquisition of solidarity and citizen values =>opening up to citizenship and solidarity through unlimited assistantship without expecting any kind of recompense: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” => Raising awareness of the value of money in developing countries • A project which brings the class together around one common feat => Mobilization of the entire class in a project which brings them closer together • What’s more, the actions undertaken by the class during the project have a real impact on the micro-entrepreneurs they support as their solidarity loan helps to develop a small revenue generating business under the best conditions possible.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Ma classe solidaire aims to continue expanding throughout France and to adapt projects to particular targets. In order to this it would like to develop new educational tools (such as a microcredit role-playing game that facilitates understanding and appropriation among students) and to develop a network of ambassadors who could be regional representatives.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Up until now project development has been financially supported by private individuals. We would, however, like to establish links with public stakeholders to ensure that the project can last and to facilitate its distribution across the country. This will eventually lead to the creation of a microcredit role-playing game, the costs of which are estimated at €25,000 (for the creation, printing, and time).

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

We do not know of anyone else who offers educational tools similar to ours. On the other hand, we are working with organisations which tackle the same subjects as us to build bridges.

Founding Story

Babyloan, a solidarity microcredit Internet platform is the initiative behind the educational project. The kit was launched in response to many teachers using the site as a teaching tool when covering microcredit. The educational kit was what they had been waiting for in terms of content and methodology. Given the interest, Babyloan networks was able to re-create the project Ma classe solidaire, giving it more depth, and allowing teacher support, which is essential to its implementation. Since then we have been working with hundreds of teachers and it is a joy everyday!

The team is made up of 2 employees and 1 intern. The manager looks after administrative and financial management aspects, as well as partnership development and strategic orientation. The head of communication and establishment relations is the spokesperson for teachers and goes into the establishments. Together, they work on the project’s development and on creating new teaching tools.

Please succinctly list a) what main activities are you doing with your beneficiaries, b) where you carry out the activities? c) how often? d) for how many hours? e) who delivers the services? and f) any other brief details

b) Junior high school and high schools in France
c) Last year, 30 presentations, next year: 80.
d) One and a half hour presentation at the beginning of the year and then help getting the project off the ground.

INSPIRATION: What do you consider the most important trends or evidence that inspire you to believe the world is ready to Re-imagine Learning? Please elaborate.

Re-imagining learning is about getting teachers to focus on empowering the young and practical education again.

LEARNING THROUGH PLAY: What does “learning through play” mean to you and why it is a must-have, instead of a nice to have?

Theory is good, but we always learn better with practical education; that’s why Babyloan networks wants teachers to continue using the “knowledge” part of the kit but to also allow students to experience microcredit and to act in a united way. Sometimes we go into adult education centers or sometimes the students are even younger than our initial target. Therefore experimentation through the game is essential to keep their attention and to get them to better understand complications which can arise.

SUSTAINABILITY: Please list a quick breakdown of your funding, indicating the percentage that comes from each source.

The educational kit, our presentations and our guidance are free to teachers and classes.
Up until now, we have almost exclusively profited from private support. Through our partners at Babyloan, la MAIF and Crédit Coopératif, and thanks to support from certain foundations.

MODEL: How does your mission relate to your business model (i.e. Non-profit, for-profit or hybrid)?

Babyloan networks is a NPO hoping to introduce and raise awareness of alternative economies to young people.

FUNDING PRIORITIES: If your organization were given $20K in unrestricted funding today, how would you use it? Why?

The $20,000 would be used to create a microcredit role-playing game, an awareness raising and teaching tool which teachers could use. This game would also appeal to a younger population (primary) or to adult education.

PARTNERSHIPS: Tell us about your partnerships that enhance your approach.

Babyloan: The origine of Ma classe solidaire and Babyloan networks. The Babyloan platform is a useful tool for raising awareness and for the achievement of this project.
- La MAIF: Member of Social and Solidarity Economies and insurance company working with those in the education sector. MAIF has access to a large network of teachers.
- Le Crédit Coopératif: Bank involved in and promoter of Social and Solidarity Economies, Crédit Coopértif bring us solidarity finance knowledge.

COLLABORATIONS: Have you considered or initiated partnerships with any of the other Challenge Pacesetters? If so, please share.

Yes! But the search function doesn't work very well on the site.

VISION: If you had unlimited funding, and you could fast forward 15 years to when your program has been able to achieve wild success - what will it have achieved?

In 2015! We are already in full swing. Unlimited finances would allow us to hire 2 more people, one who would be in charge of communication for the distribution and valorization of the project, the other would be in charge of a network of ambassadors and volunteers all over France who would go into classes to spread the word of our work.

IMPACT - KEY METRICS: Please list the key data points that you would cite as evidence that you are able to achieve lasting learning outcomes. Please also share one data point for which you most hope to see better results over time

Since 2011
• Close to 1,000 downloads
• €10,350 collected by classes solidaires
• 1,720 hard copies have been sent out (since April 2013)
• 700 students have been made more aware (school year 2013-2014)
We want to see these figures rise. During the 2014-2015 school year we will establish a project evaluation system in order to convey these qualitative details.
