Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

Since 2007, SMS'S has been thinking about an innovative response to the malnutrition in Madagascar that concerns 50% of the children between 0 to 5 years old by working on both social and economical aspects thanks to an exclusive Social Business Plan that doesn't exist yet in this sector.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What if we could tackle child malnutrition without expanding farm lands and cutting down forests?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

This project is focusing on sustainably tackling the malnutrition among children population [0 to 5 years old] in Madagascar. Also known as the "hidden hunger", the malnutrition affects 50% of these children and is the first cause of death because kids under malnutrition have extremely low immune defense and so, they can die from a simple cold.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

We understood that we needed to fight on both social and economical aspects in order to have a sustainable positive impact. We choose the Spirulina as the base of our solution in order to work on: -SOCIAL : fight against chronic child malnutrition by distributing 1/3 of the Spirulina produced + educate families to the Spirulina and the malnutrition + fight against extreme poverty by creating local direct and indirect jobs ; -ECONOMICAL : developing new profitable, and so sustainable, business model so we can sell 2/3 of the Spirulina produced and reinvest all the profits into sustainably tackle the malnutrition !
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Our solution creates positive impacts in every step. 1)Production: it is creating direct local jobs (skilled and unskilled) 2)Distribution(sales): our distribution is a brand new concept in the Spirulina market, it is creating direct and indirect local jobs. a.Now : it creates jobs in our company and enhance the qualification of our employees + our distributors and allows to earn a better paycheck b.In a two years maximum : it will creates 2 more jobs (min.) per distributor c.Now and for the next years : it is improving the turnover and reputation of our distributors 3)Distribution (social) : it is also creating direct and indirect local jobs Our solution allows to reduce extreme poverty while tackling the malnutrition issue.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Social impacts from 2002 to 2007 ➢ 4 070 people have benefited from treatment with Spirulina ➢ 10 direct jobs have been created since 2002. We don't know how many indirect jobs have been created. ➢ We have lost tracking results since 2008 because of several reasons o The main reason is the socio-political issue that the country had to deal with from 2008 to the early 2014 o The second was the big health issue that the manager of the farm had to deal with o Also, there was a growth of the competitors that produce a less good quality but are more competitive o etc. From 2002 to 2014, the project was working as an association just like 95% of the Spirulina farms existing around the country. This type of organization is not efficient enough to tackle both the social issue and the economical balance in order to have a sustainable activity.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The impact history since the beginning of the project, step by step. PAST [2000/2012] 1) Control and improve the production process in controlled pools 2) Spread the Spirulina strains throughout Madagascar 3) Market studies and creating a innovative Social Business Model on the Spirulina sector ➢RESULTS : Estimation of 4 000 people treated by farms between 2002 to 2007 = 60 000 children + parents PRESENT [2014/2017] 4) Creating the company to develop the new concept ➢ESTIMATION for our own company within 3 years = 5 000 children and 2 000 parents (mostly moms) FUTURE : Cooperative
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

We have the lands. We have the qualifications. There is about 15 farms in Madagascar. But, just like all the projects about Spirulina in the world but mainly in Africa, our project needs proper communication, tailored to each target audience. Once this would be successfully achieved, Spirulina would finally reach its due rank of a "Star" and attracted people. This would increase the demand and offer sales opportunites to us and all the farmers.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Foreign NGOs + other Spirulina farms are also tackling the malnutrition issue. Our project is different from ➢NGOs because our solution tackle social and economical aspects with a local development enhanced ➢Spirulina farms because they are all selling in the same market whereas we are selling in a new market place that doesn't exists yet although there is a huge demand. Also, as a Company, we will have more efficient ressources such as a marketing and sales department in order to assure the growth of our turnover and margin by creating a strong high value brand, etc.
Team

Founding Story

Hunger and poverty are the biggest problems in Madagascar and together they create a bigger problem, malnutrition, the direct or indirect cause of most child fatalities. I didn't really have an "Aha!" moment of idea, but rather a long search for a way to make changes in my country. I was looking in many directions until I saw my father and one of his students working on their Spirulina research and thought: "such a miracle food, only if I could make it available for everyone." Ever since, all of my studies and works have aimed to make this idea possible.

Team

We're a team of 5. My father & Dr. Bemiarana, experts in Spirulina, manage the R&D, quality, and training of partners and technicians. Haja, expert in water treatment is production/technical manager. Annie Ranirinarivelo takes care of the HR as creating local jobs is an important part of our project. I will be in charge of sales, marketing/communication strategies. What make us a great team? The trust we've for each other. It's vital in Africa

➢ Differences and gap between the financial balance required to a company and the speed of taping the new markets + Return On Investment
➢ Agribusiness lobbying that is slowing down the use of Spirulina

I've seen personally seen what Spirulina can do for malnourished children in Madagascar. The results speak for themselves.

SMS'S is created to guide us through the first steps of fighting malnutrition in the world.

This is the bottom line of job creation and poverty alleviation with an insurance to have a better access to food for the people in madagascar, firstly, and in the future for malnourished people in the world.
The situation in Madagascar seems to be very difficult to manage, but with such project, there is hope for continuation. Through this project will be increase not only the health level, but also the standard of living in general (by creating employment and durable economy on the territory); SMS'S is the best way to move on to a sustainable development.

I look forward seeing this project developing!!

Merci

Dear Erwan,

Wonderful project you have there. However the statistics of 50% of the children being malnourished, what is the reference. 50% could mean an emergency in Madagascar.

Thanks
