Sveikatiada is a joint initiative of private, public and non-governmental actors aiming to educate children about healthy lifestyle. Project offers school communities variety of fun, attractive and innovative ideas to develop healthy lifestyle habits. We aim to rise young generation who are capable and motivated to make knowledge based choices about their lifestyle.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Lithuanian children lack knowledge about healthy and balanced nutrition and lack interest in physical activities. Surveys reveal that 23 % of respondents eat fruits couple of times per week. Less than 70 % children eat breakfast daily. 55 % of kids choose donuts and 20 % choose sweets as snacks. Only 65 % of respondents are physical active, the rest dedicates less than 5 hours per week for sport and physical activity. Moreover, the compulsory sports lessons at schools are not interesting for children. However, the schools where children spend most of the time and get their basic education offer small variety of innovative and attractive activities to solve these issues.

Sveikatiada offers plenty of innovative and attractive activities to provide knowledge for children about healthy and balanced nutrition and physical activity. Project initiates massive events such as Breakfast Fiesta, Fruit and Veggies March, Exercise Month, Water day, Dancing in Sveikatiada and ect involving entire school communities. They are interesting to children and motivate them to evaluate their daily nutrition and exercising habits. Mentioned activities are carefully planned in accordance with the supervision of healthy lifestyle specialists and practitioners. In addition, conferences for teachers are organized to share experiences and to learn new methods that help to integrate health education in curricula.

Sveikatiada organizes the contest for schools of the healthy lifestyle promotion ideas. Participants are encouraged to propose the projects based on the needs of their school communities related with the issues of healthy and balanced nutrition and lack of interest in physical activities. In avarage 40 different ideas for the contest are submitted and the best 10 were funded.Top 10 ideas helped to raise the awareness of health and wellness problems as well as their prevention in bigger or smaller scale. Some of the ideas aim to encourage families to participate in healthy living activities at schools or create groups for promotion of healthy lifestyle. This contest motivates participants of Sveikatiada to initiate their own activities.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The main goal for the near future is to involve majority of schools in Lithuania in project activities. In light of the mentioned program of health education project Sveikatiada becomes one of the already successfully addapted tools od informal education to raise the knowledge about healthy lifestyle. Thus Sveikatiada will become even more atractive for new shools.The way to move forward is to involve communities including school administration, families, local institutions.Furthemore project aims to attract more private companies creating the opportunities to evolve their social responsibilities. In addition, Sveikatiada is building connections with health science students, academia and practinioners in this way creating the network of pofessionals. In cooperation with other food banks in Estonia and Latvia, we plan to start the pilot projects based on already working patern.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

In Lithuania the awareness about healthy lifestyle and nutrition problems is raised in few different forms. There were several short term projects initiated by biggest supermarkets for school children educating about healthy eating habits. Recently private social responsible business launched the project aiming to improve children’s skills in cooking and provide them with proper environment to learn about healthy eating. Several tendencies can be observed in international marketplace. As in our project the education is seen as a primary solution aiming to teach children how to make knowledge based choices about their nutrition and lifestyle. Other projects tend to focus on particular areas such as nutrition, sports, mental health. In most cases mandatory classes or activities are seen as main solutions while Sveikatiada offers voluntary activities aiming to educate conscious youth.


The success of the project was determined by the cooperation of different kind of experts working together.Marketing specialists delegated by companies are highly competent. They contribute their knowledge to communication of the project, theiy help to develop the annual plan and strategy of the project. In addition, the leading nutrition experts of Lithuania share the most relevant information about healthy lifestyle. Young and innovative project coordinators transform the experience and methodical information to attractive, easy adaptive packages of the ideas, which requires less efforts of organizers at schools but have big impact for participating children. In this way mentioned organizers, named Sveikatiada Ambassadors (representatives of schools) are given the great tool to raise children's interest in healthy lifestyle.

Sveikatiada has been growing since the first year involving 16 schools and recently reaching 533 schools in whole country.The average number of participants in monthly activities are 118 schools, 15401 students and 649 teachers, 2982 children from 142 schools participated in healthiest class competition.Feedback from teachers reveals the impact of Sveikatiada not only for schools. For example, project prepared the quiz game about healthy lifestyle which reached the broader communities including family members, local public health bureaus. Sveikatiada provides the methodical information and tools of developing healthy lifestyle habits which helps to integrate health education activities in curricula. Projected future impact is tightly connected with the recent program of heath education by Lithuanian ministry of Education and Science which encourages informal health education activities.

Sustainability Plan: Has your project already reached financial sustainability? If not, what is this solutio’s plan to ensure financial sustainability? Do the main partners have enough stake to sustain the solution? If this project requires limited budget, how will other resources be secured to maintain or grow this work?

Project's financial situation strongly depends on annual contributions of the partners, therefore sustainability is not fully reached. The main partners contributes the budget equally with the fixed amount with the posibility to raise their funding for additional activities.
However, in order to built financial stability Sveikatiada is in constant search for new fundings in municipal and governmental levels and applies for international foundations run by global companies. Every year the budget is planned with amount of money for unexpected expenses, therefore in case of limited budget the project implements its main activities without any difficulties.

Founding Story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the Partners to get started and/or to see the potential for this to succeed.

One of the project partners started the pilot project to stimulate the education on healthy lifestyle at schools. It was a tool to implement policy of company’s social responsibility. However the start of the project was difficult because of the private business background. Schools participated in this pilot procest carefully avoiding the possibilities of brand advertising intentions. The solution to continue and develop the project successfully was to delegate the management of the project to non-governmental institution - Lithuanian Foodbank. As a result government institutions such as the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Science and Education joined the project. It ensured the recognition of the project and helped attract more partners and participants. In this stage the name Sveikatiada was invented. In first year the number of participating schools increased from 16 to 78.

About the Co-Creation
Barriers: What main barriers may you have encountered to co-create during the creation and implementation of the project and how did you try to overcome them?

The selection of partners from three different sectors created various challenges. The first one was to combine the expectations of public and private sector partners. Ministires involved in the project always seek to supervise the activities at schools. Therefore Ministries needed to receive the assurance of avoiding brand advertising during Sveikatiada activities and events. All partners accepted this condition and reached the written agreement which ensured the requirement of Lithuanian Ministries. Smaller challenges appeared in the process formulating project direction and goals. Partners had different vision about couple of aspects of the implementing activities. However, the solution was natural – democratic voting about any important issue and the reach of the consensus.

Governance: What is the type of the relationship between the partners? (e.g. joint venture, contractual relationship, joint project...)

Sveikatiada is a joint project of public sector institutions, private companies and non-governmental organization. NGO organization Foodbank is implementer of the project which has developed contractual relationship with all of project partners. Project coordinators combine the methodical information received from or approved by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education and Science and the Center for Health Education and Disease Prevention. All project expenses are funded by Danone SIA, Nestle Baltics, Mondelez International, Suslavičius-Felix, Vilnius Margarine factory in equal share.

Interaction model: How is the project a transformative partnership? How is the interaction transforming the partnering organizations and their employees/ leadership in terms of creating a new vision, new management practices, new skills and new organizational structures? Please provide for concrete examples

Sveikatiada has the Council of partners – the governing body which formulates the strategy of the project. Each partner delegates the representative to the council and has equal voting right in decision making process. Council approves the annual plan of activities, the budget and goals. Every quarter the Council meets and the implemented activities, their results and conclusions are presented together with the plan for next three months.
Sveikatiada activities at schools are organized indirectly. Project coordinators create the package of ideas for each month to address one of the nutrition or physical activity problems, such as breakfast eating, water consumption, lack of physical activities, ect. Every participating school elects the Ambassador of Sveikatiada. After the event Ambassador sends couple of photos and the feedback to project team to improve future activities.
