Sveikatiada is a joint initiative of private, public and non-governmental actors aiming to educate children about healthy lifestyle. Project offers school communities variety of fun, attractive and innovative ideas to develop healthy lifestyle habits. We aim to rise young generation who are capable and motivated to make knowledge based choices about their lifestyle.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Lithuanian children lack knowledge about healthy and balanced nutrition and lack interest in physical activities. Surveys reveal that 23 % of respondents eat fruits couple of times per week. Less than 70 % children eat breakfast daily. 55 % of kids choose donuts and 20 % choose sweets as snacks. Only 65 % of respondents are physical active, the rest dedicates less than 5 hours per week for sport and physical activity. Moreover, the compulsory sports lessons at schools are not interesting for children. However, the schools where children spend most of the time and get their basic education offer small variety of innovative and attractive activities to solve these issues.

Sveikatiada offers plenty of innovative and attractive activities to provide knowledge for children about healthy and balanced nutrition and physical activity. Project initiates massive events such as Breakfast Fiesta, Fruit and Veggies March, Exercise Month, Water day, Dancing in Sveikatiada and ect involving entire school communities. They are interesting to children and motivate them to evaluate their daily nutrition and exercising habits. Mentioned activities are carefully planned in accordance with the supervision of healthy lifestyle specialists and practitioners. In addition, conferences for teachers are organized to share experiences and to learn new methods that help to integrate health education in curricula.

Sveikatiada organizes the contest for schools of the healthy lifestyle promotion ideas. Participants are encouraged to propose the projects based on the needs of their school communities related with the issues of healthy and balanced nutrition and lack of interest in physical activities. In avarage 40 different ideas for the contest are submitted and the best 10 were funded.Top 10 ideas helped to raise the awareness of health and wellness problems as well as their prevention in bigger or smaller scale. Some of the ideas aim to encourage families to participate in healthy living activities at schools or create groups for promotion of healthy lifestyle. This contest motivates participants of Sveikatiada to initiate their own activities.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The main goal for the near future is to involve majority of schools in Lithuania in project activities. In light of the mentioned program of health education project Sveikatiada becomes one of the already successfully addapted tools od informal education to raise the knowledge about healthy lifestyle. Thus Sveikatiada will become even more atractive for new shools.The way to move forward is to involve communities including school administration, families, local institutions.Furthemore project aims to attract more private companies creating the opportunities to evolve their social responsibilities. In addition, Sveikatiada is building connections with health science students, academia and practinioners in this way creating the network of pofessionals. In cooperation with other food banks in Estonia and Latvia, we plan to start the pilot projects based on already working patern.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

In Lithuania the awareness about healthy lifestyle and nutrition problems is raised in few different forms. There were several short term projects initiated by biggest supermarkets for school children educating about healthy eating habits. Recently private social responsible business launched the project aiming to improve children’s skills in cooking and provide them with proper environment to learn about healthy eating. Several tendencies can be observed in international marketplace. As in our project the education is seen as a primary solution aiming to teach children how to make knowledge based choices about their nutrition and lifestyle. Other projects tend to focus on particular areas such as nutrition, sports, mental health. In most cases mandatory classes or activities are seen as main solutions while Sveikatiada offers voluntary activities aiming to educate conscious youth.


The success of the project was determined by the cooperation of different kind of experts working together.Marketing specialists delegated by companies are highly competent. They contribute their knowledge to communication of the project, theiy help to develop the annual plan and strategy of the project. In addition, the leading nutrition experts of Lithuania share the most relevant information about healthy lifestyle. Young and innovative project coordinators transform the experience and methodical information to attractive, easy adaptive packages of the ideas, which requires less efforts of organizers at schools but have big impact for participating children. In this way mentioned organizers, named Sveikatiada Ambassadors (representatives of schools) are given the great tool to raise children's interest in healthy lifestyle.
