Greeneration means innovative green thinking about business cases and working conditions. The truly responsible enterprise model starts with a green-minded organization which can implement environmental developments in its daily operation. Our generations really need answers and viable solutions in connection with environmental issues to stay a competitive company, to be a loyal employee or a good, conscious and responsible European citizen.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

In everyday life people are environmentally conscious – or at least they think they are. Through our decision-making processes the short-term interests are determining us. The majestic goal namely the protection of the environment and society is in backseat many times. As a matter of course we know that the environmental pollution is one of the major societal challenges which must be answered today to give tomorrow and future generation a chance. Dreaming about live in a sustainable settlement and work at a green company. Even so we take off our responsibility at the “factory gate”, because we believe that corporate structure is unchangeable or leastways it is over our competency. The change has to start from heads to come true the dream.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Greeneration is an answer to the outlined environmental challenges. Our mission is to switch over something in the heads, reform thinking about green business and show the responsibility of individuals. In collaboration we have created the creative, truly active and useful model of environmental management system called Green Office Program. 1.Be committed 2.Win the support of management team 3.Dedicate resources and form a green team 4.Identify your performance and set up goals 5.Motivate your staff and teach them 6.DO IT: turn green 7.Take a look where are you now 8.Communicate 9.Let it to pervade the daily function in your business... 10. ...and do it better! Impact: How does it Work

In 2011 KÖVET got a phone call from a public organization from Zalaegerszeg, West-Hungary (Economic Supplier Organization of Zalaegerszeg). The financial director of the organization said: “We would like to participate in the Green Office Competition, but could you please explain what it is exactly, because I have no idea about the green office.” This small organization participated in the starter workshop of the competition in Kinnarps House. They got some advices from KÖVET, learnt about the best practices from awarded companies and implemented a great green office project within the organization. It was a success story, because finally they got the “Biggest improvement in the small category in 2011” award.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The Green Office Program and initiatives are applicable in all organization all over the world. To make it come true it would be necessary to set up a green office umbrella organization in all countries. These organizations would be the member of KÖVET. The main goal is to involve the whole public sector with its institutions and as many companies as we can. The public sector would have a leadership role to incite market players while private sector could learn from each other on workshops and site visits.
Sustainability

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

WWF Finland has a similar green office programme, but it tipically works in Finland and some countries from the Middle East and from the Far East. There is an urgent need for similar project in most of Europe’s contries. A variety of environmental management systems (ISO 14001 and EMAS) could be a solution for office environmental issues, but these systems are too general (it says what you need to achieve but it does not give you the method). However KÖVET’s Green Office Program offers specific methods (eco-mapping, action plan, trainings) and tools (office ecological footprint calculator, questionnaires, check list) for offices.

KÖVET Association, social-mission organisation: The organization provides 3 environmental specialist who are also trainers, a communication manager, a financial manager and and administrative staff for the project. Trainees and volunteers can be involved if necessary. Kinnarps Hungary Ltd., corporate partner: We have a contact person from the partner company who is responsible for our green office cooperation and events. In addition 1 person deals with the green developments of the company’s office and 1 person handles the green event centre. The management is fully committed in both organizations.

Partner 1: KÖVET Association, non-profit, social mission organization.

KÖVET does pioneer work in corporate environmental management and green office initiatives. It works with tight partnership with Hungarian companies, civil organizations and higher education.

The motivation is to create exemplary green workplaces with partners to demonstrate the advantages of environment and people friendly offices and build a green office network first in Hungary and later in the European Union.

KÖVET is able to highlight sustainability related expectations of the society against companies. It has a 16 year old green office expertise, experiences in combining green initiatives. KÖVET has involved 130 organizations in the project.

Partner 2: Kinnarps Hungary Ltd., corporate partner, KÖVET’s main strategic partner.

Kinnarps provide interior workspace solutions for offices and public environments. High quality and low environmental impact mark the entire chain from raw material to realization.

Kinnarps is a green-minded company. It wants to run an environmentally sound office in its own building and fulfils the green requirements in the customer-focused event centre. It aims to be an exemplary company.

Kinnarps is the 1st Green Office Certified Workplace in Hungary. It is closely related to business sector and welcomes thousands of guests yearly, so Kinnarps is the messenger of green thinking with involving stakeholders.

Other cooperating partners: greening offices form the last 16 years.
130 offices from private, public and civil sectors irrespective of size and activity.

Participants would like to be greener by improving environmental performance and reduce their ecological footprint. They have the motivation to exchange experiences and learn best practices from each other.

Further partners mean the mapping of new opportunities and fresh green tips. An organization development influences the thinking of its business partners and employee's also. They are citizens who will take home this new attitude.

The Green Office Program of KÖVET Association is a community-based project which means a very deep collaboration with companies, public organizations and institutions. In the last 16 years 130 organizations participated in the program and more than 20 000 employees got an overall picture of the sustainability issues especially environmental tasks in the office. KÖVET organized Green Office Competitions and Exhibitions, handed out awards for the best offices with Kinnarps Hungary in the last 6 years.
The First European Green Office Competition and Award Ceremony was hold in 2013.
Now we are building up Hungarian Green Office Network, working on the criteria of the green event centre and finding the opportunities to build an EU-wide network.

The project is based on 2 main sources: participation fees (competitions, trainings, certification processes, personal guidance, membership etc.) and co-financing from Hungarian and European grants.
Necessarily other sources need to be involved to achieve future targets and build networks: corporate foundations, European Union funds, a minimum fee of membership for the national member organizations.

Team
Founding Story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the Partners to get started and/or to see the potential for this to succeed.

The whole team was instrumental in green matters but the parent company itself was the most important initiative. Kinnarps traditionally an environmentally friendly company from its founding to these days. This effort has been strengthened in the past few years.
In Hungary we strive to provide marketing and planning the same approach, the same authentic solution as the production. When we have met with the Green Office Program of KÖVET in 2008 we promptly knew that this initiative totally fits for us.

About the Co-Creation
Barriers: What main barriers may you have encountered to co-create during the creation and implementation of the project and how did you try to overcome them?

In spite of the management is committed sometimes there is extra need for the motivation among partners, subcontractors, employees during green developments. On the other hands it is a long process to change people’s thinking about fixed behaviours. Humour brings you through any difficulties.

Governance: What is the type of the relationship between the partners? (e.g. joint venture, contractual relationship, joint project...)

Kinnarps Hungary is a member organization of KÖVET Association. We are working within this partnership since 2008.
All companies interested in the green initiatives can join to KÖVET as a member company or the planned Green Office Network.

Interaction model: How is the project a transformative partnership? How is the interaction transforming the partnering organizations and their employees/ leadership in terms of creating a new vision, new management practices, new skills and new organizational structures? Please provide for concrete examples

The corporate partner brings the for-profit approach to the partnership. KÖVET as a non-profit organization stands for the expectations of company stakeholders. Based on this both parties can learn new aspects from the project.
