Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Obtaining a high-end database for the informal sector of the economy. How can you effectively include the informal sector of the economy in new technologies in order to obtain a quality database?

To obtain a quality database, Nueva Empresa created a methodology that allows the informal sector of the economy to become part of a virtual platform that allows access to different services that allow them to satisfy their needs. Once this sector is integrated into the platform and utilizes the services, it will easily generate a detailed database for business.

An entrepreneur who has a small informal business requires training to improve functionality. That's where Nueva Empresa along with its allies gives the employer the opportunity to access a full scholarship or partial scholarship for a management training program designed exclusively for entrepreneurs. Upon accepting the scholarship, the entrepreneur will have to break a barrier and integrate the Nueva Empresa virtual platform. Once the online enrollment is completed, Nueva Empresa will gather relevant quality information that will allow us to understand and to improve the strategies and policies towards this sector, creating tools for financing requests, network creation, and business promotion.

Quantitative: At the moment we have over 12,000 users, of which over 600 have completed the Pyme (Small and Medium industry) Manager Training Program. All of the users who completed the training course and joined the Nueva Empresa platform saw benefits and improvements to their business. 1) 13% saw it as a professional grounding. 2) 8% obtained more clients. 3) 39% were able to make better decisions. 4) 10% improved teamwork. 5) 22% were able to improve their business. 6) 3% were able to improve their quality of life. 7) 40% were able to find more support tools besides the training. Qualitative 1. Improved confidence in the decision making process. 2. Improved the work environment. 3. Broke barriers to new technologies 4. Saved time and money in marketing and business training.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

In the future Nueva Empresa plans to enter more Latin American Countries and replicate the methodology and expand the potential market. The expectation is to double the number of users in the short term and improve strategies and policies in that market, thus achieving greater impact in the areas of: 1. Reducing transaction costs 2. Reducing transaction times 3. Increasing supplier options 4. Reducing the information gap 5. Generating greater access to markets.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Currently, Nueva Empresa generates revenue through training scholarships that are sponsored by local institutions. We have now incorporated the option for the informal market to access training at low cost. By expanding the training offer, the number of delivered courses will be greater, and greater the resources to sustain the project. Additionally we would like to find an investor that believes in us.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There are several companies that offer similar products to ours, but none do so with the intention of introducing the informal sector of the economy to new technologies through training, which helps Nueva Empresa to generate a high quality database while meeting the existing needs of the sector. What sets us apart is the focus on customer service. We invest many resources in order to interact with each user and to gain an understanding of their needs, which allows us to innovate and create new products and methodologies that meet the needs of the market.

Founding Story

Nueva Empresa emerged thanks to a group of entrepreneurs who identified an underserved market, the market at the base of the pyramid. This market needs access to: 1) Information 2) Training 3) Markets 4) New Technologies 5) Networking 6) Space for promotion. What Nueva Empresa designed was a platform that meets all these needs in one place. The potential for success is great because, through our platform, the base of the pyramid will gain access to appropriate information and integrate new technologies, while reducing transaction costs and times. The goal is to provide the base of the pyramid with multiple services that solve several of their unmet needs in one place.


We currently have 2 departments: Systems and Call Center. Systems is made up of 3 full time programmers. The Call Center is made up of 5 people: 1 full time manager and 4 part time assistants. As we grow our company, we anticipate the creation of strategic departments: Marketing, QA, Research and Development and a Sub-management in each country where we have a presence.

Challenges: What challenges might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

The biggest challenge we have is limited knowledge and access to new technologies at the pyramid base. To overcome this challenge, Nueva Empresa performs continuous improvement to the platforms in order to improve the user experience so it will be an intuitive experience. Also, it creates networks of allies in strategic sectors that support the distribution of our services to this sector.
