Tutki™- is a project that was created to combine creative recycling and pro-social initiatives. Tutki™ is the first creative product made of recycled newspapers on the market. Our aim is to popularize the DIY (do it yourself) method of weaving with paper wicker. The aim of the project is to create a socially committed business that combines the four values contained in the logo of the product: ECO, DIY, <3, ZEN

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

We belive that our idea of creating Tutki™-newspaper rolls for weaving, on a mass scale and in a socially responsible way is a great response to current problems, such as: 1) growing unemployment and a difficult situation of disadvantaged people on the job market - we hire people for whom it is difficult to get stable jobs due to their intellectual disabilities and low qualifications (we already cooperate with a few organizations and foundations eg. Stowarzyszenie Otwarte Drzwi, Fundacja Synapsis, Stowarzyszenie Ekon, Fundacja Atywizacja) 2) environmental pollution and dealing with garbage- our product is 100% recycled newspapers 3) Loosening interpersonal ties and growing consumption –Tutki™ promotes creativity and togetherness

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

It already works- our project has already involved disabled persons from 5 organizations in Poland (altogether more than 60 persons), all of whom became specialists at weaving. By now we have reached production capacity of more than 10,000 pieces per month. Almost everybody can become a „Tutki-weaver” easily; we provide training which anyone can take and start working from home. As for the sale of the product, we already co-operate with Empik in Poland, the largest and most recognized network of distribution of cultural goods, knowledge and entertainment on the Polish market. We plan to expand both in range of the products (we are preparing ready made collection) and new clients, by taking part in EU and Polish fairs.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Cooperation with Tutki™ helps people with intellectual disabilities to find a regular job and possibility to grow. One of our empolyee, Magdalena Skulska, an intellectually disabled person, works for us and her situation changed within a few months - from being jobless and hopeless to active and happy in her new job. Also people with down syndrome find rolling Tutki™ very funny- they are very good specialists at it. We also cooperate with autistic people and rolling tutki helps them as well. We also activate people affected by long-term unemployment by engaging them in more demanding tasks. As for the environment- each Tutki™ set is made from one to two pieces of color magazines. Our technicians cut them to pieces and roll into TUTKI™ news

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The strength of this project is the fact that it can be easily placed everywhere and everybody can be involved. In the future we would like to develop our activity and have a couple of production locations around Europe - every department would be in a different EU country, which would co-operate with the local organisations helping excluded persons and dealing with their wastepaper, selling the product on their market, which makes the carbon footprint even lower. We plan to adopt the idea by taking part in EU fairs and trades. We have just won the contest and will take part in social design section at DMY Berlin festival 2014 where we are arranging meetings with our potential partners. We plan to show our idea to other EU countries to spread the idea and create Tutki™ as European social innovative business with strong bonds and partnerships between our production locations.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Our approach is totally innovative. As far as we are concerned, we don`t know of any similar solutions which address the growing unemployment and situation of disabled people in the labor market (in Poland level of employment of people with disabilities is 23% i (for comparison, in most EU countries it is 40-50%). The strategic plans of the EU is to assume a growth of 70% over the next 10 years. Poland plans to increase it to 30%. To reach this state, we must seek new, unconventional forms of employment and Tutki™, is innovator in this field with great growing potential. Our solution differs from others not only in creating an innovative product, but also in creating a whole idea of socially committed business and network of our producers, technicians and clients.

Our cooperation with different key partners and proper work organization is very important to us. It beneficial that we use already existing structures of foundations and organization and implement there our production. Our team consists of Tutki™ director and top management of different social-mission organizations. We cooperate very closely to each other. Orgnizations and foundation gives production facilities and production supervision, and Tutki™ team gains new distribution channels and income streams.
