About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

The physical spaces, school curriculum, and space management don’t consider the view and voice of the children (their dreams, necessities, ideas, and proposals). It is necessary to value the knowledge of the children and see them in their present time with their real needs and desires like a social actor with the right to participation according to the U.N. Child Rights Convention.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

To give voice to the children, through a playful listening methodology, so that we can include their playful, creative, and innovative voices and views in formulating and implementing public policies, architectural projects, political-pedagogical projects. A child learns, communicates and relates through playing, because of this, children’s listening is done through different playful strategies such as: model building, playing reporter, drawing, photographic recordings done by the child, make believe game, book clubs, picture games, and the trail game. Professionals that work with the children and the families are empowered by the methodology through playful teaching.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

In June of 2014 the Projeto Criança Fala experience exchange was carried out and the teachers and families made the following testimonials: they learned with the children that changes and beauty are in the small things, they learned to listen to the children, the learned that they play in a different way, they relived the joy of being a teacher, they came to know the reality of the children, the discovered that the children know how to do it, without organizing the space and are capable of changing. It brought the families closer to the children, and to the school. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfI9MAkeJHs&feature=youtu.be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJbwIVBRc4M&feature=youtu.be A project was formulated in a park in Glicério, SP with the views of the voices of the children.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Incidence in public policy for childhood with the formation and implementation of the first district plan for early childhood made with the view and voice of the children. Changes: in the educational practice of the teachers, in the view of the family for their children (they started to listen to their children and value what they say, in the physical space of the school and of the city starting with the playful voice and view of the children). Integration of the class – The View and Voice of the Child in Architecture Projects (in the Fine Arts College of Architecture); 160 education professionals and family members of the children participated in the training to apply the children’s listening workshops; 490 children from schools, collective dwellings (slums), parks participated in the listening workshops and were heard; The project was implemented in 8 schools, 2 parks, 1 hospital, 1 college, 1 collective dwelling; Create a public listening policy.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Production of videos with the children talking is a strategy to sensitize and awake the interest of the sponsors, schools, public managers in implementing the project making it expand. The project has the potential to expand through all of Brazil being implemented in different locations: schools, plazas, parks, community centers, hospitals, housing, and colleges. Like this, we will have more playful and creative spaces with the views and voices of the children in these same spaces and greater assertiveness in the formation and implementation of public policies.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Create and articulate a network of different partners and sponsors, spread the project through social networks, produce videos of the project for capture, Participate in public notices and notices of project awards, produce feedback for the sponsors. Classes and lectures online and in person. Currently there is a sponsorship from United Way Brasil. The project has assistance from the Asas Institute for formation and implementation of the sustainability plan.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Rio +20 of the Xuxa Meneghel Foundation CECIP – Project Small Child in Focus Memories of the Future – Views of Brazilian Childhoods Projeto Criança Fala is different because it accomplishes the listening of smaller children starting at three years old utilizing different playful strategies of listening about different themes: fear and violence, playing, media and technology, the environment, education, family, health. The listening of the children seeks a change in public policies, in the physical school and public places, in practice and management of the spaces and equipment.
Team

Founding Story

After getting a masters in Childhood Sociology from the Universidade do Minho, in Portugal, I went developing pilot projects and writing articles about the children’s participation and listening, and identified the people’s acceptance of this idea of listening to children. In 2013 the Federal District Office of the Child invited me to carry out the project to insert the view and voice of the children in the formation of public policies centered on childhood. A video was produced from this project with the voices and views of the children, posted on YouTube and published on social networks. With this publishing, business and public organs began to take interest in implementing the project, it was then that I perceived the potential and rapid growth of the project.

Team

To attend to the different needs of the children the team is multidisciplinary, made up of professionals from different areas: pedagogues, architects, sociologists, plastic artists, environmental managers, and psychologists. The team works like a freelancer, each professional carries out a stage of the project according to their expertise and the need of the project. A training will be given with all of the professionals about the methodology of the project.

INSPIRATION: What do you consider the most important trends or evidence that inspire you to believe the world is ready to Re-imagine Learning? Please elaborate.

The experiences of Projeto Criança Fala have revealed people’s introduction and desire for the new, the reinvention of learning. They have learned that they can do this in an innovative, creative and play-oriented way with the views and voices of the children. Hearing children, people have been inspired to believe and want to reinvent learning and have inspired others.

LEARNING THROUGH PLAY: What does “learning through play” mean to you and why it is a must-have, instead of a nice to have?

Children relate, communicate, express, and learn playing, this is why they deserve and should have respect in these their forms of learning and communication. Beyond this, in the law in the Convention of Children’s Rights, the Right to Play is provided. All of us are more happy, creative, supportive, cooperative, sensitive, aesthetic, and we learn much more through play, this is why, Projeto Criança Fala empowers adults with the methodology of the project through play and revives the joy of learning in people. The spaces are modified by the play-oriented view of children.

SUSTAINABILITY: Please list a quick breakdown of your funding, indicating the percentage that comes from each source.

Private businesses - 60% public administration – 5%, workshops by live programming 5%, partnerships and mobilization of people, social organizations and collectives without financial resources only moved by inspiration in the cause of listening to children. Today the movement has more than 250 people.

MODEL: How does your mission relate to your business model (i.e. Non-profit, for-profit or hybrid)?

CriaCidade has as a mission to promote and strengthen the social participation of all residents so that we have a more inclusive, supportive, sustainable, humane, and creative city. CriaCidade is a social business that can be for profit. Its eventual profits are always to further invest in the projects so that it might grow in phases. The project works also with social mobilization inspiring people.

FUNDING PRIORITIES: If your organization were given $20K in unrestricted funding today, how would you use it? Why?

To implement Projeto Criança Fala in a school of childhood education in São Paulo with changes in the physical space and management of the school coming from the views and voices of the children. Two live programs in the CO.MO.VER studio – with the goal to sensitize and inspire people to look and listen to children.

PARTNERSHIPS: Tell us about your partnerships that enhance your approach.

Fine Arts College of Architecture – for formation and coordination of implementation of the architectural project of Glicério plaza with views and voices of the children; Municipal Government of São Paulo – insertion of Projeto Criança Fala into the Programa São Paulo Carinhosa (Needy São Paulo Program): appreciation and visibility of the children in public policies. Fábrica da Cidadania (Factory of Citizenship) – the social organization that mobilizes the community and gives up physical space for the project’s workshops.

COLLABORATIONS: Have you considered or initiated partnerships with any of the other Challenge Pacesetters? If so, please share.

Yes. In the feedback I gave, I came to know Sylvia Angelini’s Projeto Movimente (Project Move). We scheduled a Skype meeting to talk about the possibilities of partnerships with Criança Fala because our projects have synergy. I proposed that we introduce listening to children in the concept of play-oriented furniture that she works with.

VISION: If you had unlimited funding, and you could fast forward 15 years to when your program has been able to achieve wild success - what will it have achieved?

Inspired, mobilized, and empowered people with creative and sensitive views to see the abundance, and the potential and not the scarcity in public places, in the places they live or work in, as they look at the abundance of locations and how they manage to transform the physical spaces and their management with the views and voices of children captured in play-oriented listening workshops.

IMPACT - KEY METRICS: Please list the key data points that you would cite as evidence that you are able to achieve lasting learning outcomes. Please also share one data point for which you most hope to see better results over time

The pleasure and joy of being a teacher was reborn, the children’s communication and sociability improved, the families drew closer to their children through playing and listening, changes in the physical places and in the management through the views and voices of children – the results after 5 months of the project.
