About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Manufacturing and different stages of a product value chain, are inherently linked to resource and energy use and environmental impacts. Efforts are made to decrease impacts over the entire supply chain. One common approach is to assess the life cycle in a case study, and then try to mitigate impacts based on findings of the study. However often successful, this approach is slow, expensive and cannot cope with quick changes in daily business. Also, often in B2B communication, the impact of a supplied product is not known, and businesses combine their single company perspective with market averages. A common collaboration mechanism between companies in and across value chains to decrease energy and resource consumption is thus missing.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

- Datapooling of quantitative primary organisation data, allowing for quantitative goal-setting and fact-based communication to valorise reduction initiatives - Full upstream value chain impact view, putting reduction action opportunities back in value chain rather than only at purchaser/consumer side and allowing a practical tool for implementation of the impending EU OEF/PEF regulation - Stimulating a reduction economy by adding a reduction layer in the tool and linking economic and ecological drivers, focusing on risk management, cost efficiency opportunities, process/product/market innovation opportunities.The practical reduction advice output is fully usable by non-expert users, allows for broader take up of sustainability.

Concrete examples not yet being available, we are focusing on 3 main case studies to prove the effective environmental impact reduction on this basis and the enw business models cross value chain arising from this : Green coffee supply chain : coffee plantation -> processing and milling -> coffee roasting -> retailing Green carpet : additive production/resin production -> fibre production -> carpet production -> installer -> material recovery -> carpet production Egg supplu chain : animal feed cultivation -> milling and mixing -> egg production -> retailing

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Main business development lever is obtaining the mandate from all key stakeholders to become the European industry reference the European Environmental Footprint Platform, backed by the EU. During the development of the methodology and software platform, in parallel a test program will be set up to feed the methodology and prove tangible results. The objective of this test platform is to have Revalue fully operationally up and running by the end of the development phase.

Multitude of tools/platforms already available, some planned. Not all as successful : lacking mandate, often academic, scalability or viable business model. None does exactly what Revalue intends : quantitative database of primary data x full upstream value chain impact x active reduction economy layer. Collaborative open attitude, finding synergies/building on what exists - develop open source plug-in tool. Other retailers : own solutions (ProPlanet, Puur & Eerlijk, Myrmex), TSC & PEF Key USPS compared to existing initiatives = quantitative approach, based on the collection of primary organisation data ; connecting value chain actors over the chain and giving full value chain view of a product’s environmental impact ; stimuklating an active reduction economy based on cross-chain environmental business models and the set-up of a “Market place for environmental applications”

Focus is both on environmental as economic business gain by putting in place an active reduction economy and mainstreaming environmental value into business decision making.

About the Co-Creation
Barriers: What main barriers may you have encountered to co-create during the creation and implementation of the project and how did you try to overcome them?

As we are still early in the project, these are first findings :

International disparity of key contributors – solved through regular conference calls and sparse use of cocreation workshops, one-on-one alignments, process of project work packages and clear dissemination process, helped by guidelines for EU subsidy files
Disparity in vision and key background of actors – cocreation process of progressing insights : through the management of subsidy files deadlines, the team is obliged to put stakes in the ground and have a firm discussion basis – text revisions by different actors. Focus on market study insights drive the value proposition development as we start from market needs/problems.
Newness and ambition level of project : requiring multitude of actors and experts to be co-ordinated.

Governance: What is the type of the relationship between the partners? (e.g. joint venture, contractual relationship, joint project...)

Consortia according to EU subsidy file requirements and according to funding allocated.

Interaction model: How is the project a transformative partnership? How is the interaction transforming the partnering organizations and their employees/ leadership in terms of creating a new vision, new management practices, new skills and new organizational structures? Open interaction model with a dissemination structure based on regular project meetings.
An open source data and collaboration platform that can be used as a plug-in in existing software and allows publishing products with their impacts in B2B and B2C communication, making it possible for businesses and consumers to select least impacting products that influence the impacts of the products developed by them; this intrinsically will lead to an overall reduced environmental impact, since a low environmental impact becomes a competitive advantage. Specific reduction strategies around this platform are developed and tested, for various production and manufacturing situations in and across value chains. The project fully addresses resource and energy reduction, but goes beyond that by fully addressing the comprehensive European Environmental Footprint approach.
