SEALS venture can be defined as being the simple solution to the question; how can international exchange students inspire high school students in Morocco to build their own path?

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

According to the survey conducted by the Moroccan High Commission for Planning in June 2011, 54% of Moroccan people aged between 18 and 45 still live with their parents, and have worries about their current situation, and do not have plans for their future.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

SEALS venture aims to attract volunteer exchange students that are showing a high academic achievement, from different back rounds and fields of study to Morocco, so as to share their stories, make high school students dream, and discover more about themselves through: - Discovering their interests through various activities related to different fields (chemistry, physics, business, sports…) - Trying new experiences (Let young people getting used to be outside of their comfort zone) - Enhance leadership skills through team work and games. - And Help them think globally and know more about others.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

We first set this new way of teaching in a school in rural China with other teachers from Taiwan, China, India, Poland and Morocco. We have faced some challenges at the beginning as the youngest students aged between 12 and 14 were not really focused on the content of the courses. We have noticed that students became much more involved after changing the way of teaching from a traditional to a creative way of teaching. We teached scientific subjects such as physics and biology though fun experiments, languages through storytelling, history through theatre, and basic management through sports and team games etc. It is just after seeing the results of our work that the idea of creating the same project in Morocco became certain. 30 out of 60 students were able to manage and to present on their own, two different performances to the community by the end of the program. And 60 students out of 60 were able to express their passions and to talk and write about their future plans. Additionally 40 students out of 60 heard for the first time about other countries during the program.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

This program is aiming to enhance leadership skills of young students aged between 13 and 17, living in both urban and rural areas. This project is also aiming to attract international exchange students already studying in Moroccan universities, so as to share stories and teach the young high school students. There are many other organizations working in the same area of enhancing leadership skills of young students and targeting the same population. Unlike the other competitive solutions, SEALS project is using a creative ways of teaching that are not requiring any technology use or any specific tools. And what is making this project even more competitive is that the program involved is not only working on enhancing leadership skills but it is also working on developing a better world understanding.

Idea
Founding Story: What inspired your venture? Why?

During the assessment of the results of our first launch of the project in China, the students were asked to draw about their future using a single pencil. A girl took off chuck from her bag and start drawing the vision of her future. When we asked her about the reason why she used colorful chuck instead of the single pencil we gave her, she simply answered “I am dreaming about a colorful future, I had to use chuck because it is the only colorful pens I have in my bag”. From that moment I realized that everyone deserves a colorful future. This is the story that first inspired my venture and still inspiring it.

Goals
What do you want to accomplish in your first year?

The short term goals include organizing the first SEALS CAMP collaborating with the Moroccan French Alliance of SAFI which will take place in late August 2015. And also include creating and developing the online platform for exchange between international students in Morocco and the different partner’s schools that might use the platform to deliver courses, or to organize a pen pal programs. We aim to provide up to 576 hours of work and support per a year for each high school student using the platform that will be provided by either school teachers or international exchange students.

Impact
How will your Venture define success in the short term (1-12 months)?

The short term outcome will consist on small projects that will be presented to the community by the high school students by the end of the program to get them involved in what we are doing.

In the long-term (1-3 years)?

The long term outcome of the project consists on helping youth growing their own path thanks to the advices and support provided by either educators or other university students.

How will you measure success?

In order to measure the outcome of the project it will be useful to use some performance indicators such as:
o the percentage of growth of the number of members
o The number of the projects presented to the community by the end of the program
o A post satisfaction surveys

Sustainability
How will you recruit new members for your venture?

New members will be recruited based on the degree of their involvement in the project’s vision. The degree of involvement can be assessed in the personal statement that the new members need to submit before the selection process starts. Interviews may be conducted to make sure that the new members are motivated and have written their personal statement by themselves.

How will you appoint new leaders and transfer leadership when the founding members want to leave the team?

New leaders will be elected by all the members of the team each year based on the majority’s choice. All the members of the board need to write their specific tasks and the procedures of work so as to optimize the transfer of knowledge from a board to another.

How will you continue your project in 6-months time or once you have spent all of its initial capital?

The SEALS team launched a package called “10 $, Double impact”. The schools in urban areas need to buy the package so as to be considered for the program. The price of the package is symbolic and will not exceed 10 $ per a student. The 10 $ will help cover the costs of the program of two high school students, one in the urban area and one in the rural area. The amount of money collected will help run the organization and will probably grow proportionally as their projects grow.
