Zaklad grew out of the longing for self-sufficiency, self-education and cooperation with people acting with passion. We are everywhere, spread around in our small apartments, struggling with a constant lack of machines, tools or a person to talk to about our ideas. In one space we gather people, passions and equipment. Zaklad will allow you to learn from basics how to fix something or create something from scratch to apply it in our surrounding.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Our project was created in a response to the gap in a social and cultural offer of the city of Poznań. A lot of people posses extraordinary passions but they cannot improve them because of several reasons. Domestic space has limitations, it prevents loud work and it generates spatial constraints. Then, the lack of adequate equipment, financial obstacles, the lack of sufficient knowledge and contact with people, who could guide them or help to develop their passions.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Zaklad is the space for implementation of plans and ideas for which domestic space is not sufficient. It will be equipped with specialized facilities, which people can’t afford only to improve their hobby. Equipment will be gained through sponsors but also through involving specialists - small and large entrepreneurs who are willing to share their knowledge and experience. In addition, Zaklad is a friendly spaceenabling implementation of ideas, concepts and initiatives allowing to gain a wide audience.Products and proposals made within activity of Zakład will reach not only inhabitants of discrit, but also whole Poznań.
Impact: How does it Work

There is a person who has (f.ex.) basic sewing skills.They are on a basic level because of two reasons - he has a faulty equipment and he has nobody to learn from. From the website, he receives an information about the workshop of basic sewing, conducted by a specialist who is one of our partners. By participating in the workshop he meets people with similar interests, he can use proffesional equipment, developing his skills and receive inspiration.Then, he purchases and he can develop his passion participating in workshops and benefit from the support. Due to the varied activities in space, can also acquire skills in other fields. If he will get the idea of creating his own brand, he will get the advice from partners who specilize in this.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The result of our activity will be various. In on hand it will be creating of a new point of reference in our neighborhood, creating a new dimension of its existence and increase its rank. On the other hand, we create a well-acting cooperative connecting people with different skils who will have a place to combine their potentials also in the form of initiatives that go beyond Zaklad.Thirdly, the long-term effect will be to promote aquisition of manual skills through a variety and cyclic workshops. So far, such a skills are not considered by youngsters as something fashionable and valuable. For many years, in Poland, there is a noticeable decrease of interest in crafts among young people, which may have sad consequences within 20-30 years.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Zaklad is the only one project of its kind in our region. There are only three similar initiatives in Poland, however these activities are set locally, so the location for example the Krakow one, does not cover the needs of Poznan people, generally due to the distance and different needs. In addition, our place is formed by people from outside and we to organize them space, equipment and materials. In this moment people who want to work in a shared space and to have a possibility to use a place and technical background to develop their interests, they do not have adequate opportunities to do so at the moment. There have been made attempts to create a co-working space in our city, but due to the lack of legal personality, orientation towards occasional actions and the policy limited to one type of workshop (electronics mainly), the idea did not complete successfully.


We have a several years of experience in social and cultural animation in urban space thus creating a working space for the development of many people is a natural consequence of our previous projects. In our human resources we have people with typical technical skills, with ease in establishing contacts, f. ex. with potential co-organizers or sponsors and people coping well with organizational issues. Combination of these skills gives us a comfort but also provides taking care of different elements of Zaklad makerspace. However, the basic guarantee of succes and luck is a wide-range partnership with organizations, entrepreneurs and institutions. This ensures not only knowledge and experience exchange but mainly it’s stability due to the network of co-responsible holders.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact. Please specify using qualitative and quantitative data (e.g. # of indirect and direct beneficiaries); help us understand how this solution truly makes a difference.

The project begun in mid-March 2014. The first meeting gathered above 50 people interested in cooperation within Zaklad by contributing equipment and knowledge. Among this group we found our further partners. So far, one month after the publication of our idea we gained nearly 1000 likes on facebook. Partnership proposals already appeared f. ex. from local Youth Clubs aimed to provide different ways of spending free time apart from the internet. Direct beneficiary of our project are people, who benefit from our space and equipment. At this time it’s a group of 30-40 people, which gradually increase as the offer of Zaklad grows. Ultimately, we want to involve around a hundred people, who will be constantly and regularly present in co-working space. In addition, each month, we expect another several dozen of people taking part in workshops and events provided.

Sustainability Plan: Has your project already reached financial sustainability? If not, what is this solutio’s plan to ensure financial sustainability? Do the main partners have enough stake to sustain the solution? If this project requires limited budget, how will other resources be secured to maintain or grow this work?

The project does not currently have a financial support. Sponsors are the expected financial source (also as a barter) and financial participation of the project participants (a symbolic fee for using the space, equipment and workshop participation). Workshops will be conducted by specialists (some of them our partners) in niche areas which has a huge value and which guarantees the participation of a large number of people. What is more, thanks to the form of organization, as a foundation we can apply for local and European Union funding. We already applied for financing in several institutions, which is also going to help fund various aspects of activities in Zaklad.

Founding Story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the Partners to get started and/or to see the potential for this to succeed.

A president of our Foundation is a person who’s interested in newly emerging iniciatives in our country and abroad and knows many activists in Poznan and what’s going on around. The combination of these two elements pointed him in the direction of similar western iniciatives and, in the same time, provided knowlegde about the lack of such an comprehensive initiatives. Next, we started talking with local activists, investors and entrepreneurs what showed the potential of our idea and motivated us to act.

About the Co-Creation
Barriers: What main barriers may you have encountered to co-create during the creation and implementation of the project and how did you try to overcome them?

During the implementation of the project we encountered various kinds of problems. One of the first was the issue of finding suitable space. We wanted this space to be of sufficient size to accomodate all initiatives under one roof. In our town, such a space is quite high priced, therefore we firstly needed to be sure if we can afford it and collect the money for the beginning. Another obstacle was organization of this space in terms of it’s physical setting and functioning. We solved this problem thanks to the cooperation with partners and specialists in the field of spatial and business issues. The last problem to solve was choosing the method of cooperation and working with partners, but after several meetings with them we dealed with it by establishing a model of cooperation which suit all.

Governance: What is the type of the relationship between the partners? (e.g. joint venture, contractual relationship, joint project...)

Partners cooperate based on a partnership agreements, however they are connected above all by a common goal, which is the acticity of Zaklad. Partners conduct a variety of activities in the space, but they can support each other as well. We intend to meet with every partner once a month to discuss questions and comments or any problems that may occur and to plan the next month’s activities. Partners have the opportunity to act individually as well as to cooperate with one or more partners. If any conflicts occur, their reference is the space organizer - our foundation.

Interaction model: How is the project a transformative partnership? How is the interaction transforming the partnering organizations and their employees/ leadership in terms of creating a new vision, new management practices, new skills and new organizational structures? Please provide for concrete examples

The Partners are specialists in specific areas. They share their knowledge and skills during workshops and consultations and they can cooperate within the space as well. A person who professionally leads a business receives an opportunity to develop his manual skills (f. ex. sewing, furniture renovation). When it comes to professionals in handcrafts, they will learn from each other, on the basis of interdisciplinary collaboration. What’s also important, partners can step in to the world of their potential customers, meet their needs and know how the feedback. Businessmen can get into the role of customer, what helps with planning next business operations. In addition, the enterprising mentoring enables to develop novice craftsmen to develop. Partners share the knowledge, certain skills and they inspire and support new people joining Zaklad makerspace in their activities.
