About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Our founding team has spent the majority of the past three years in the Emerging Markets understanding and living with the community we service. Of our team of 13 full-time employees, 11 live in the emerging markets, spread between, Nicaragua, Mexico, Pakistan and the US. For the past three years, since our first grant from the MIT MediaLab, we’ve been working to understanding our market inside and out. We have studied the nuances of how people in our markets, from Brazil to India, find jobs and use technology. Specific to Latin America we are dealing with a young population that is open to new technologies and desires a better life for their families. Socialization is hugely important as demonstrated by the proliferation of online (and mobile) social networks. Privacy concerns are also a major issue in the digital realm – for which our service is especially well suited as we only release identities when candidates express interest in positions. Trust is also a major issue and can be lost easily. This is why we ensure only real jobs and no spam makes it through our platform. Each country in the Emerging markets differs greatly, even within Latin America. What is consistent is mobile phones, prepay, and individuals desire to better themselves. Our teams deep expertise in understanding our customers is a huge part of why our service will continue to be successful as we grow.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Job seekers in emerging markets have been getting jobs the same way for the past 50 years. Primarily through Newspaper classified and Word-of-mouth. While traditional online job boards have enabled computer owners to connect with jobs in a more efficient way that group comprises only 10% of individuals in the emerging markets. Most internet users only use the web sporadically (at internet café’s, universities, etc.). As online job boards require that candidates search for jobs to apply, this process is ineffective for the majority of the population. What has changed is mobile penetration. In Latin America mobile penetration is up to 95% in some countries. While only 1.5 billion have access to the internet 4.6 billion have cell phones. This is why Assured Labor’s disruptive innovation leverages cell phones and text-message to create a game-changing platform to connect employers with candidates that aren’t on the internet every day. Assured Labor’s current service targets the 30% to 40% of emerging markets’ job seekers who only use the internet sporadically. We enable them to register with our service when they are at the internet café, after that they never need to see a computer again as we communicate with them entirely through text-message. Later this year we will launch a fully mobile offering so that we can enable anyone with a cell phone to find a job.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Assured Labor has built a highly scalable proprietary technology platform to connect mid-to-low wage candidates with employers using the web and mobile technology. Our service, named EmpleoListo, is currently running Nicaragua and Mexico. We are the largest digital employment service in Nicaragua and have registered over 100,000 candidates and 800 employers in Mexico in our first seven months in the country. By efficiently connecting thousands of candidates with hundreds of employers we help more people to get hired faster. Our primary website is www.EmpleoListo.com.mx – Empleo is Spanish for Job or Work or Business. Listo means Ready and Clever, so the name signifies JobReady and WorkSmart. Day to day: Our primary activities are: enhancing our technology, registering job seekers and adding employers to our marketplace to get more people hired faster. While our primary goal is to create a more efficient and transparent marketplace for jobs we also leverage our platform to assist candidates with: Feedback, Education and Training. Feedback: We provide feedback on resumes which are incomplete or not inspiring the interest of employers. If the resume is not the issue we often identify skills that a candidate may want to build to be more employable. We then partner with NGOs, Universities and Training Organizations that may be able to assist our candidates in building their skills. Education: We provide free content to our candidates teaching candidates how to improve their resumes, interviewing skills, networking skills and more. We also enable candidates to receive these tips on through text-message on their cell phone. Training: We partner with NGOs, Universities and Training Organizations to assist our candidates in gaining skills that can assist them in becoming more employable. A few of our training partners in Mexico include: eNova – an NGO which teaches people how to use computers and how to speak English, and ProEmpleo – an NGO which teaches individuals how to become entrepreneurs.

Share the story of the founder and what inspired the founder to start this project

Assured Labor’s founding team began working on the service in 2007 while at MIT. The original idea came from Assured Labor’s CEO. The inspiration came from David’s expertise in the wireless and media sectors gained as an Equity Research Analyst on Wall Street. Through that experience David was always inspired by the potential for 4 billion people with cell phones to do much more than just make calls and send text-messages.

On the other side of the coin the founders have traveled to over 60 countries and lived in multiple countries including: India, Brazil, Mexico, Nicaragua and New Zealand and the UK. Through their travels to the emerging the team encountered many reoccurring issues. Top of the list was motivated, skilled individuals that could not find jobs no matter how hard they tried. Additionally, in meeting with companies he heard companies complaining to no end that the “can not find a good worker for the life of them.” The issue was not lack of supply (candidates) or demand (jobs), rather it was that each side did not know how to find each other in an effective way.

Combining this massive need with the power of mobile technology the idea for Assured Labor arose. David and Joseph Bamber started working on the idea together at the MIT MediaLab in 2008 – the year the company was incorporated.

Explain your selections

We are funded by prestigious angel investors and Venture Capital Funds. We are also generating revenues from our customers in both of our existing markets - Mexico and Nicaragua.

How do you plan to strengthen your project in the next three years?
Challenges
Which barriers to employment does your innovation address?
Please select up to three in order of relevancy to your project.

PRIMARY

SECONDARY

Inadequate transparency

TERTIARY

Lack of access to information and networks

Please describe how your innovation specifically tackles the barriers listed above.

We allow candidates to register online or via mobile. Once in our database we make it simple for employers to search and find the best matching candidates for their positions.

Once employers find their favorite candidates our system contacts those candidates via text-message and allows them to apply using text-message. Once both sides have confirmed their interest in each other Assured Labor makes the connection. This process happens over the course of hours, as opposed to weeks using the newspaper classified.

Are you trying to scale your organization or initiative?
If yes, please check up to three potential pathways in order of relevancy to you.

PRIMARY

Grown geographic reach: Global

SECONDARY

Leveraged technology

TERTIARY

Grown geographic reach: Multi-country

Please describe which of your growth activities are current or planned for the immediate future.

We are currently the largest market place for jobs in Nicaragua. We entered Mexico 8 months ago and have already registered over 100,000 job seekers. This year we plan to enter multiple other countries within Latin America. Shortly we will also enter Asia.

Do you collaborate with any of the following: (Check all that apply)

Technology providers, NGOs/Nonprofits, For profit companies, Academia/universities.

If yes, how have these collaborations helped your innovation to succeed?

As a marketplace we interface with both candidates and employers. Any organization which can help our market place to grow, or to provide more services to our candidates is a welcom partner.
