What are the primary activities of your project?

Maple Leaf Biotechnology Co., Ltd undertakes the livestock and poultry manure disposal, and produce biological organic fertilizer. Five technical inventions are on the way to apply for independent intellectual property technology license. Biological organic fish fertilizer, mao bamboo special fertilizer, and general fruit and vegetable biological organic fertilizer have already been put on the market. Artichoke special fertilizer, potato, oil tea, tea special fertilizer are being demonstrated in pilot area.

What is innovative about your initiative? How is it a new contribution to the field?

The project adopts the aerobic fermentation technology, by using the deodorization and rotten plan that microbe resolves elements like UA in livestock and poultry manure, in order to realize the industrialization mass production. With the best combination of cultivating compound microbe flora and unique function bacteria, this technology could allow the auxiliary material e.g, livestock and poultry manure with different component and wastes to quickly decompose, solving the problem that in the South too much rains store lots of water in the materials which leads to the difficulty that the fermentation temperature is hard to raise and the fermentation time would be too long. At the same time, with the nutrient balance controlled release technology and strain protection material technology, the nutrient of the fertilizers could be more comprehensive, the fertilizer efficiency period could be longer, and the soil improvement effect could be better.

The headquarter base Ningxiang County is located in the western part of Changsha City---the capital of Hunan Province. Ningxiang is the demonstration area and pilot zone of China’s two types of society (conserving and environmentally friendly society). As one of the preferred counties in the rise of central China preferential policy, it has a good industrial development and friendly living environment. Ningxiang is also one of the important areas in Hunan provincial livestock breeding, so the raw material could be sufficient.

Lei Lei, graduated from Environmental resources management Major, University of Toronto, Canada. With the innovative spirit for development of china and Hunan two types of society construction, and awareness of agriculture and environment protection, she has lots of experience and great ability in business management, technical innovation, and market operation; therefore, she is capable of the project’s implementation management.

Since 2008, the company has invested over 5,000,000 RMB, establishing a technical research consultancy group, and preliminarily trained competent employees. Through stable development, the company has the ability to produce and sell 100,000 tons biological organic fertilizer every year.

2012.11--- 2013.12: finish the fermentation base expansion and produce 5,000 tons in the year. Produce 70,000 tons in 2014;
2014.11--- 2015.12:finish the construction of two other fermentation bases and produce 5,000 tons. Produce 100,000 tons in 2016.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

Market competition is the main risk the project might encounter.
A. Its organic fertilizer is a new technological production. People need a process to accept it, so the slowness of entering the market might be the foreboding of the market risk.
B. There are dozens of organic fertilizer companies establishing in the whole province in the last few years, therefore, market segmentation and competition are no way to avoid.
C. Crop’s growth cycle is long. It is a gradual process to change farmers’ thoughts.
How to overcome them:
(1) Enhance technological innovation, improve the quality of the productions, and reduce the production cost.
(2) Change farmers’ thoughts by different media propaganda; improve farmers’ understanding of our productions.
(3) Get support from relevant government departments.

Tell us about your partnerships

Maple Leaf Reforestation Inc. is a listed Canadian company, with the primary focus on forestry project, industrial breeding, biological organic fertilizer production, biomass energy raw material forest base construction, clover forage production, and environment management project. In 2006, the company invested 25 million RMB in Inner Mongolia building a modern nursery. In 2007, it invested nearly 20 million in Xianjiang and Shaanxi building a clover planting and processing base. In 2008, it registered in Changde city, Hunan province with 2 million RMB to build an owned subsidiary “Changde Fenghua Fertilizer Co., Ltd”. The company completed its basic construction and began its pilot production in May, 2009. From July, it established 50 pilot demonstration sites in over 20 counties in Changde, Yiyang, Yueyang city around Dongting Lake. That had a good demonstration effect which could lie a solid foundation for the large-scale production and expansion. Because the raw material resource is limited and cannot meet the expanding market demand and the development of the company, it established “Hunan Maple Leaf Biotechnology Co., Ltd” in Feb. 2010 in Changsha, Hunan. It primarily selected Ningxiang, which is the biggest Livestock breeding base in Hunan as its headquarter and raw material fermentation base. It could provide enough raw material for the future 100,000 tons organic fertilizer base.
