BUILDING TEACHERS’ CAPACITY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN KALABANKORO COMMUNITY

Mali
Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

For more than one decade, the quality of education and educational infrastrucutures have been decreasing in Mali. As a result, le level of students is boming very low thus influencing negatively the quality of human resources. Moreover, children from underprivileged groups or poor households seem to be excluded from the educational system. Therefore, Ecole Privee Youchaou strongly believes that education is the key to development. To do so we need to promote quality teaching and quality education; and involve all the children no matter what their social status is. To achieve this it is essential to provide teachers with innovative and participatory teaching techniques and improve school curricula.

Innovation
Describe your idea in fewer than 50 words.

Ecole Privee Youchaou strongly believes that education is the key to development. To do so we need to promote quality teaching and quality education; and involve all the children no matter what their social status is. To achieve this it is essential to provide teachers with innovative and participatory teaching techniques and improve school curricula

What makes your idea unique?

The ongoing training of teachers, regular staff meetings, outreach monitoring and evaluation of teachers and their lessson plans, the implementation of participatory and innovative teaching techniques, the sponsorship program; and the immersion, etc make my idea unique.

What is your area of work? (Please check as many as apply.)

At risk youth , Behavioral issues , Child protection , Education , Girls' development , Youth development , Community development , Income generation , Social Enterprise , Gender equity , Vulnerable populations .

What impact have you had?

Whereas most students cannot read, write or speak French properly from grades 1 to 6, all my students can read, write and speak French even in grade 1.

Moreover, my school has been selected in both to participate in both editions of the GLL Dictation competition organised every year by the Canadian Embassy because of its performance.

Describe the primary problem(s) that your project is addressing.

When this school opened its doors in Kalabankoro-Nerekoro in October 2000, there were almost no other schools around in the community. People wanted to send their children to school but there was no way of educating them. Moreover, only few parents could afford sending their kids to the nearest public school (3 km) which had 100 to 120 students in the same classroom. Most people living in the area at that time were daily workers, watchmen, street vendors, mason aids, housewives, etc. living with $ 2 a day. I remember my students of grade 3 could not read or write their names. Thus, my first objective was to raise students’ reading and writing ability, improve the overall level of education and give a chance to poor households to send their children to the best school in their community.

Describe the steps that your organization is taking to make your project successful.

To make our project successful, we need to be more committed and stick to the items which made us make the difference i.e the staff meetings, teacher training, immersion at school, limited class size, the use of ITCs and ongoing coaching of staff.

Impact
What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Success in Year 1:

I neeed some funding to do more advertisements, cover some deficit of the operation costs of this year; purchase more school supplies and textbooks as most students do not have books; and conduct 2 teacher training.

Success in Year 2:

Conduct 2 teacher training and purchase more school supplies and textbooks. Build the capacity of the admin staff; and get more school supplies and textbooks.

Success in Year 3:

Conduct 1 teacher training and staff development.

Do you have a business plan or strategic plan? (yes/no)

no

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization? STEP 1:

Get moore funding to raise the salary of staff in order to be able to hire and maintain more qualified teachers and staff.

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization? STEP 2:

Develop the capacity of teachers to get more qualified and committed teachers.

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization? STEP 3:

Get at least one text book for each student in different levels (grade 1- 9)

Describe the expected results of these actions.

The level of all the students is increased
They can all read, write and speak French fluently;
All my students have reached the vocational or high school level.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

The defining moment that led me to this innovation is that when i came to build my house in this community, I found out that most children of school aged were staying home because their parent could not afford it; and those 'fortunate' attending the only publci school with 120 students in one class room could not read and write their names in grade 3 or 4.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

The social innovation is that children involved in my school are mostly from very poor families where the head of the family and mothers are not educated and live below the line of poverty. There is no way for them to make it nor for their children. But once their child/children have the chance to attend the best school in the community and get a better education from grade 1 to 9, they are likely to finish vocational school or high school and get a job to take care of themselves and their parents; thus breaking this vicious circle of poverty.
