About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Large numbers of youth in Thai/Burma border area have lived fractious and chaotic lives. Many have had little or no formal education and have been in full time low paid work from as young as 12 years old. Others have tried to make the most of the education available to them when coming to Thailand from Burma. They face many challenges as they learn a new language, cope with being much older and bigger than their classmates and face discrimination from some teachers and other students. The promise of comparatively high earnings and the skill of the brokers in recruiting convinces many young people to leave for the city. Empowerment and analysis of the environment is very important step to inform and prevent phenomena of exploitaion and abuses that are very common in the border area.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

A project for stateless youth at risk which aims to create a safe learning environment & to provide genuine knowledge and skills to highly vulnerable young people in the Sangkhlaburi area so as to equip them with the ability to make informed decisions about their lives. An arts based youth programme aiming to engage young people through creative and meaningful activities so that they can explore and learn about themselves, their rights and the wider world. Borderlands aims to work in both a preventative role and also to support youth already dealing with trauma.Art is used as a bridge to help participants express thoughts feelings & experiences which they often lack the confidence or skill to express directly in spoken or written language. To the same intent acting as a “visual language” art is frequently valuable as the least threatening medium for the communication of difficult or painful feelings ideas & issues.

The movement to the city, work in factories in Bangkok, drugs. Currently two girls Etamui Daorin being exploitaed in bangkok city and, back to the vilages have no work, no freedom of choice, without money, do not attend a school program, but participating in the workshop activities and educational non-profit organization promoted by Arteca and local partners. This story tells what happens in many cases young stateless persons living along the Burmese border, and beyond. They believe they can find fortune in a big city, usually Bangkok. Arteca through the prevention program and Information wants to warn young people of these dynamics while giving phone numbers, contacts and phone numbers in case they were in danger.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Social Impact
What has been the impact of your solution to date?

More than 150 youth have been participating at the workshops.
Discussions with the partners have shown that the challenge will not be finding young people who can benefit from the program, rather it will be ensuring that the limited number of spaces are available for those that need them most.
Factory workers – there are 5000 workers in 82 factories in the Three Pagodas border area (near Sangkhlaburi). Many of these workers are teenagers. The project is offering evening classes to these youth so that they have opportunity for self expression and self learning alongside learning valuable life skills such as safe sex and the dangers of drug use (use of yaba is common in this area). There are also many children working as sex workers in this area and whilst this is a very complex and challenging situation.
The analysis of needs has showed how the above mentioned target group was a gap of interest in the area, nalysis is offering a new stage for teenagers out of school.

What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?

The long term objectives is to disseminate new methodolgies of education and new way of approaching at risk youth. To spread knowledge on innovative curricula to develop life skills and analyze the surrounding.
The creativity medium offer the opportunity to create a needs analysis in a total participative way stimulating and empower the beneficairies to choose the themes in analysis and to develop it.
Development of newtwork in area of risk will improve the level of impact and reduce the case of explotation of teenagers in south east Asia regions.
The scale up is also offered by the opportunity for ARTECA Onlus to implement activity also in laos that permit a large dissemination of result among social actors.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?

To make the programme a mobile one. (On leaving their homes the children from those remote & very unsophisticated villages are plainly the most at risk) Additionally the concept of a mobile programme could well have application to the large potential pool of young migrant workers in the border area.
