About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

The main problem is exclusion of children with disabilities from mainstream education specially the children from poor and marginalised families, which we are trying to solve. For inclusion the problems encountering are- Negative attitude of families and school community; Lack of pre-school education opportunity; Lack of physical accessibility and enabling environment in schools; Lacking life skill learning scope; Lack of knowledge and skill of teachers teaching different types of disabled children and proper teaching learning materials. Lack of appropriate policy/legislative provision to ensure education rights of disabled children and inability to bear the cost by families due to economical hardship.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Motivation/sensitisation of families and school community to accept disabled children; creating opportunities of pre-school and non-formal education including life skill, protection and vocational skill learning and provision of aids & appliances; Encouraging school authorities making schools accessible and creating reasonable accommodation for disabled children; Teachers training facility on inclusive education and developing teaching-learning materials for different types of disabled children; Incorporating disability issues in education policy; Creating space for disabled and marginalised children to be rights sensitive and empowered so that they can claim their education right and influence policy makers/duty bearers through advocacy to adopt appropriate policy/law and ensure proper implementation. Providing support to low income and marginalised families for raising income so that the do not engage children into work.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The primary activities are - Motivation and sensitisation of school communities; Sensitising Parents Group on education right of children and families accountability; Operating Inclusive Pre-school and Non-Formal Education centres providing basic, life skill, vocational and protection education and preparing children for participation into mainstream formal education; Enrolling them into formal schools and providing support making schools accessible; Conducting teachers training on Inclusive Education and developing proper teaching learning materials including its use; Providing educational materials, tuition fees, conveyance to children for schooling; Motivational meetings with officials of education department and policy advocacy. Forming Inclusive Self-Advocacy Groups comprising of Children with and without Disabilities, empowered through making rights sensitive, capacity built on situation analysis, advocacy planning and self-advocacy to promote their education right. The difference made: Enabling environment created and access of disabled children in mainstream schools increased; Family member’s accountability increased; More than 1000 disabled children we enrolled into mainstream schools; Self-advocacy groups of children is empowered and active in advocacy by using theatre, music, photo/painting exhibition; Government is preparing Inclusive Education Policy, circulated order to all primary school to enrol disabled children; developed curriculum and trained 60,962 teachers on inclusive education and enrolled 83,920 disabled children in mainstream schools.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There are no competitors. Many organisations working in the field of education and operating Non-formal schools, they only address the basic education need. Some operating special schools for disabled children, which isolating the disabled children from mainstream society and promoting exclusion. We are different because- we work for inclusion and provide all aspect of life competency based education with rights, participatory, inclusive and community based approach. Parents, school community, local government authority, disability service providers, civil society and disabled children themselves we consider our peers. Involvement of all concerned stakeholders with our work, make them feel ownership and accountable.

Social Impact
What has been the impact of your solution to date?

More than 1500 street and slum children with and without disabilities those were living within deprivation, discrimination and negligence, never even dreamed to have education have been engaged in education. Many of them still retaining in education and many secured decent work and supporting families to be economically empowered. Their acceptance within families and community increased and dignity regained. They are living happy and meaningful lives.

An enabling environment and access created within the school community and society that created opportunity of inclusion into mainstream education system and community with equal rights and dignity for street and slum children with disability. Observing the change of lives of benefitted children many other children and families are engaging their disabled children into education as the barriers removed.

What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?

i) Increased protection of children with disabilities through provision of specialised services and improved case management at community and national level.
ii) Reduced number of children with disabilities who become victim of sexual abuse and discrimination in the project area.
iii) The socio-economic situation of working children with disabilities and their families is improved through increased access to educational and income generating services.
iv) Reduced stigmatisation of children with disabilities in formal schools in the project area.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?

The major barrier is the poverty of the families. Due to poverty for survival of the families they engage children including disabled children into work/labour to earn income instead of sending them to schools. Negative attitude of the society could be another barrier. The project would motivate families through forming parents groups and conducting vocational and capacity building training so that they can raise income and send their children in schools rather engaging them in work. Motivational and capacity building meetings/training also would be conducted for Government Officials, Service providers, Community Leaders/members to bring positive change in their attitude.
