About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Lack of awareness causes loss of thousands of lives globally to preventable and curable cancer cases. It also determines the way the society perceives cancer and cancer patient. The situation is quite severe in Nepal where more than 40% of the population is illiterate. Even the literate do not possess adequate knowledge about cancer. Most cases reported in hospitals are at advanced stages signifying the lack of awareness and practice regarding–its prevention, early detection and appropriate treatments. Also cancer is often seen with fear and cancer patient with pity. We aim to disseminate awareness so that people can adopt a more healthy lifestyle and seek appropriate measures ahead of time so that thousands of lives can be saved. We also wish to develop positive attitude towards cancer.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

We believe that young children have the power to act as change makers among their peers; in their family, their neighborhood and society as a whole. Hence, this project plans to spread cancer awareness in young students, the makers of the society hence preparing them to combat cancer with the right attitude. The activities include: • To conduct Awareness campaigns through documentaries, interaction and IEC materials focusing on tobacco, diet and exercise, danger signs of cancer, its prevention, treatment options, attitude towards cancer. • To conduct different literary events such as arts, drama, essay, speech and debate • To Train on healthy diet • To Promote healthy lifestyle through different sport events • To Mobilization of students to generate awareness in and around the school premises as students are agents of change.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The Elixir Club is a model for generating awareness on cancer and encouraging to acquire the healthy lifestyle. The youth at the Elixir Club will get knowledge on the different aspects of cancer and will impart this knowledge to their peers, families, societies and nation as a whole also spreading the positive attitude towards cancer. Since the last six months, when VS Niketan decided to partner with us against cancer, our Foundation has constantly provided various trainings, information and guidance needed by the team of young students from the school to take a lead in their respective communities. As part of the project, the students recently decided to take a step towards enforcing the new formulated “Tobacco Control and Regulatory Act, 2068” around their school campus. They interacted with shopkeepers and pedestrians within the 100m radius of the school premises and educated them about the ban of smoking and the sale of tobacco products in public areas. Our pioneer Elixir Club at Ideal Model School has successfully conducted an Inter School Meet on various literary competitions including 8 schools on the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day 2011. It was a platform where youth addressed their own problems and came up with their own solutions. All this and so much more make us believe that youth are not the leaders of tomorrow but today itself.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Organizations such as NCRS and NNCTR are also working in the field of cancer mainly focusing on treatment and early detection aspect. They also organise the educative program on cancer on occasion basis. As a memorial foundation we are a team of devoted individuals, who understand that awareness comes from self realization and it should be a continuous process rather than interval based. Thus, the concept of the elixir club imparting awareness in regular basis via different activities as well as promotion of the positive attitude towards cancer. We mainly believe in active involvement of the receiver rather than participating as audience and the elixir club provides the opportunities and ground for involvement and bringing change in individual as well as social environment.

Children and youth are not the target but the most powerful tool for a positive change.

Social Impact
What has been the impact of your solution to date?

- More than 4000 students now are aware about cancer and its preventive and curative aspects.
- Eight Schools have opened Elixir clubs paving the way to make their school, families and community aware on cancer.
- Students themselves have begun to initiate awareness programs in their respective communities. Examples can be given of the awareness program carried out by the Elixir Club of V S Niketan on implementation of 'Tobacco Control and Regulatory Act 2068' around school area at Minbhawan and by Elixir club of Occidental Public School at a remote village of Dhading district on the effects of Tobacco use.
- Students conduct regular information sessions, speeches, and articles at their own schools to educate the students and staff.

What is your projected impact over the next 1-3 years?

- More students will be made aware about cancer through the 'Awareness and Interaction Program'
- The Elixir Club Network will be expanded to around 15 schools by the end of three years.
- Change in attitude among the youth through activities focused on FCTC, Healthy Diet and Physical Exercise.
- Initiatives such as the one from the students from VS Niketan will be implemented by all the eight current Elixir Clubs.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?

- The main barrier would be manage the smooth monitoring of the Elixir Clubs. Material development, volunteer management, activities, training of trainee are the major areas which we intend to focus. We have a certain pool of resource people and volunteers who work with us selflessly. However we do need some hired volunteers for the smooth functioning. We tend to overcome this problem through recruiting permanent staffs on hired basis and development of the various tools like the IEC materials which are essential for our endeavor. We only intend to conduct fundraiser activities in regular intervals to meet our financial requirements.

Founding Story: We want to hear about your "Aha!" moment. Share the story of where and when the founder(s) saw this solution's potential to change the world [125 words]

The self-motivated events conducted by two of the Elixir Clubs made us see the Club as a changemaker. One event was conducted by the Elixir Club of V S Niketan who took initiative in enforcing the 'Tobacco Control and Regulatory Act 2068' in the locality of the school area at Minbhawan, Kathmandu. Another event was conducted by the Elixir Club of Occidental Public School at a remote village of Dhading district. They showed the documentary 'Hunna', produced by the Richa Foundation that talks about the adverse impacts of smoking, and interacted with locals. Two people have given up smoking as an instant result of the program.

The impact caused by these programs made us believe that Elixir Club has the potential to change the world.

The team can be categorised as:
i) One Full Time Staff for constant monitoring of the proper functioning of the Clubs.
ii) Eight volunteers to look after each Elixir Club
iii) At least two volunteers to conduct research and development in analysing the data obtained from the awareness program
iv) A team of presenters, especially from the medical background, to conduct awareness programs at the schools.
v) At least two writers focused on documenting and spreading our message to the public via blogs, social media, and newspaper articles.

Please elaborate on any needs or offers you have mentioned above and/or suggest categories of support that aren't specified within the list

We have a strong capability of managing efficient resource persons for the successful conduction of programs, but we lack in investment to maintain the costs associated with it. This has never stopped us from achieving any programs till date. However we understand that with this issue out of the problem we will be able to contribute much more.
